CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL ONLINE STUDENTS
Author: Christian D Daley

Online learning is becoming a very popular method of education for both traditional and non-traditional persons. There are numerous universities, colleges, and other higher learning institutions proposing online learning courses for their students. But, some students may not be fully prepared for online learning. With such a new environment comes new demands. Research has been compiled to help ensure the success of students who are learning online. The characteristics that make an online student a successful online student have been confirmed by expert online educators; characteristics such as having the proper online tools, utilizing what motivates you to pursue online courses, and managing a healthy lifestyle with a good support group in your corner. These seasoned online educators believe that these characteristics make up a successful online student.
Not too long ago distance learning atmospheres were solely based on correspondence through paper, audio, and video broadcasts. You have students who are coming from more “traditional” ways of learning, in which they are converting to a whole new way of learning. Some students are not converting, rather they are just being introduced to post-secondary learning, and presented with the convenience of learning online. The experts have all agreed that on the importance of students’ having well rounded technology knowledge, and having sufficient tools prior to taking online learning courses. The experienced educators all agree that lifestyle factors, much like time demands, play imperative roles in students’ successfully completing online learning classes. The article emphasizes on the goals and purposes that motivate a student to take an online course. Also the importance of study habits and skills, and of the personal traits were deemed not to be as significant. As for self-discipline, that is most important to the success of online learning (Schrume, 2002). It is imperative that students have some level of comfort with using online tools; online tools such as solving simple issues, accomplishing simple tasks, and checking emails. This all may seem simple to most, but there are students who struggle with the simplest of online tasks due to their lack of knowledge with technology. It can be very challenging for these students to learn while taking the course. This is because not only are they learning the technology, but they also have to keep up with the courses’ content simultaneously. Nevertheless, a properly designed course that uses the simplest technology needed to meet the courses learning, and “user-friendly” courseware could really go a long way. Professors could also ease the transition for some not so “tech savvy” students. This can be done by providing support CD’s and videos that guide the students through the online learning environment (Schrume, 2002). Students have many reasons to attend online courses. It is important for the student to recognize this motivation, and use it to help get them through the rigors of learning online. Using one’s motivation will keep them focused on the task at hand, and keep them moving forward successfully. One online educator said “I believe those students who CHOOSE to take my classes are motivated.” Another stated “Our retention rate in our full Bachelor of Teaching degree is 80%+ over the past four years. These students are selected by an interview process which looks at potential success factors. The point of careful selection seemed clear to many of the respondents.” Another educator said “My students are selected, so they are usually self-motivated. The dropout rate is low” (Schrume, 2002). An online student’s lifestyle also factors into their success. Students must be aware of the responsibilities that govern their lives. They also need to determine if they would have at least 10 hours to commit to studying in order to succeed in the online learning environment. They need to decide whether they have the schedule flexibility to devote hours towards their online learning, or if they have little room for rearrangement. It’s also important that the student has the support of their family, coworkers, and friends as they follow their studies. Most students who have dropped a course have noted that this is due to a lack of time to devote to their online course. Childcare responsibilities and work related time constraints have been linked to the non-completion of courses. Educators emphasize that students understand that the complex aspects of their lives needs to balance out with their online studies (Schrume, 2002).
While studying the article I have learned additional ways to improve my learning experience, methods such as stronger research methods and self-discipline. The research learned in this article is very beneficial to the future success of my online learning. Properly utilizing the keys points of this article can make anyone a successful online student. Especially when the student is deeply motivated to succeed in online learning. A person’s lifestyle will play a huge factor in their success in online courses along with having the proper motivation. But these two points are the most important in my opinion. I feel this way because a student’s home life could really hurt their learning if they work a lot or don’t have the schedule flexibility to squeeze in their course material. Then you have what motivates that student to pursue an online education. A student’s motivation is what keeps them going when the course gets “rough” or when their lifestyle is getting in the way of their education, but their motivation keeps persevering.
As an online student myself, utilizing the research in the article, anyone could become a greater student. I will continue to try and utilize my time more efficiently, and procrastinate less. Sometimes it is hard to break old bad habits. But, a student like myself who is working to be a better disciplined student, could see much success in their online learning experience. I have even fallen victim to the lack of time to devote to the online course at hand in which I eventually had to drop due to work related scheduling issues. I have always had the support of my family. When I dropped that course it was due to a new job, a job with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, and a misunderstanding of the courses requirements not listed in the course description. Each student, of different learning methods come away with valuable information when they read this article. The article looks to hit on many points, which are backed by experienced online educators. The article may relate to many students, whether it be one point or the many others made.

...Traits of Online Learners Christina Kellam ID# L26677261 Discussion Board Forum 2 Final INFT 101 B89 There use to be a time when majority of students would take college courses in a classroom. Now a lot of colleges/universities give the privilege of completing courses at home online. There are more and more students choosing to do online schooling. One of the reasons is due to it being a little bit more flexible with their schedules. What is it that makes online learners successful? Boyd (2004) stated “There may be only certain kinds of students under certain conditions who can successfully learn via the online format” (p. 31). Will only certain students succeed in online courses? I feel that anyone can succeed as long as you have motivation and determination. Taormino (2010) stated in the article “Student awareness of the characteristics, traits, and skills for online learning is an important area of dialogue between the student and learning institution” (p.55). I would have to agree with Taormino about making the students more aware of what all is involved with online courses. I do feel that anyone that is doing work on a computer on a regular basis will improve their skills no matter what their background is within computer skills. Mark Taormino’s article has been summarized with key characteristics along with reflection and application for successful online learning. The first category of characteristics for a successful online learner is Technical Factors...

Successful Online Learning

...Online learning has become one of the largest growing educational systems in America. Not only in America, but it has also spread to other parts of the world as well. In a recent study by New York Times, more than 500,000 Americans take online courses. According to collegeclasses.com, the first online course was known as “correspondence courses” and began in the 1700’s with pamphlets and textbooks that were sent to the students. However, the success of an online student isn’t something that comes easily but is earned through self-discipline and other vital characteristics. According to the article, “Individual Factors and Successful Learning in a Hybrid Course” by Kelly Arispe and Robert J. Blake, success in online courses is a hybrid language. With this in mind, Blake and Arispe point out what the five main important personality traits to contain, which are, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and neuroticism. Before Arispe and Blake go too in-depth, a common question may be, what is a hybrid class? A hybrid class is “a course where a ‘substantial proportion of the content is delivered online [a course that] typically uses online discussions, and [one that] typically has a reduced number of face-to-face meetings” involved (pg.4). However, even though certain personality traits do play a role in the success of learning, success also relies on the learner’s preferences as well. According to Blake, “It is important to know which types of learners thrive...

...Characteristics of Successful Online Students Are you motivated, responsible, and goal oriented? If you said yes, then going to school online might be for you! But before you apply to an online program, there are a few things to consider. In order to be a successful online college student, you must either be or seek to become motivated, responsible, and goal oriented, for without these characteristics, you will have great difficulty accomplishing your assignments. In the article I selected, “Students’ characteristics, self-regulated learning, technology self-efficacy, and course outcomes in online learning” (Wang, C., Shannon, D., & Ross, M. 2013), several topics were covered. Some of the topics included in the article are; self-regulated learning, relationships between technology self-efficacy and course outcomes, students’ characteristics, motivation, and course outcomes. However, the main focus of this essay is what the article has to say about the different characteristics that make online students successful. Out of everything I have learned from the article I chose, the thing that stands out the most is that it doesn’t take a certain personality to succeed in the world of online learning. It takes characteristics that I believe, can be learned and practiced. Something that did surprise me though was that in some cases, gender was a deciding factor in self-efficacy as it applied to technology and academics. “Conversely, Brown et al. (2003) found that males reported...

How to Be a Successful Online Student

...degree to strive for and in the technical world of today, a student needs to decide if the online structure will work for them. Proverbs 1:5 says “Let the wise listen and add to their learning and let the discerning get guidance” (NIV). Knowledge is power and I believe God wants us to pray and search for information about the college we are supposed to attend and most importantly if we are able to attend online. Ecclesiastes 10:10 states, “If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success”(NIV). When choosing to go to college online, the student must have strong personal and learning characteristics along with certain factors that will help make the online student successful. Summary The article that I chose to read was ‘Student Preparation For Distance Education’, by Mark Taormino. It was very enlightening and it talked about some great points to achieve successfulness with online learning. One of the points that the article talked about was having a strong personal characteristic such as integrity and to be motivated. The definition for integrity is to be honest and fair and to be complete or whole. Integrity is one of the major keys while on this journey. It’s not just making sure you avoid plagiarism or cheating, but keeping your nose the grindstone and keeping yourself motivated when you want to quit everything. Another strong characteristic that a student will need to have is being able to be an independent learner...

Have you thought that maybe online courses may be the right choice for you? Maybe you feel you don’t have the discipline to stay focused and motivated if you take courses the less traditional way and opt to study online. Well, I have read an article that explains the online approach and the learner characteristics and approaches. The curriculum that is offered for distance learners has really grown this past decade. Universities find that distance education really is looked at fondly and more individuals are choosing to further their education by using the online learning tools. The majority of people have said it’s very beneficial to both students and schools. Others will argue that online learning has many disadvantages but the online curriculum has grown tremendously. Online learning definitely has its advantages. The advantage that is most often talked about is convenience. A student can work around their own schedule and can work from almost anywhere that offers computer or internet access. Online learning can also be a little easier on your bank account since the tuition is oftentimes lower since you avoid residential costs as well as the cost to commute. Online learning can also have its downfalls. A student that may be interested in the social aspect of the...

Competency Differences Between Adn and Bsn

...A good student demonstrates both in-born and learned characteristics, which makes him/her successful. Though characteristics such as cognitive skills and intelligence are in-born and play a major role in making a student successful, academic achievement demands other characteristics too. Reviewing the lecture and “Tips for Successful Students” by Lake and von Baeyer reveal that characteristics such as effort, attitude, curiosity, preparation, communication, time management, and goal setting are some of the important factors which determine academic success of a student. My strongest characteristic as a good student is academic resilience which I believe is my determination to persevere at academic tasks no matter how tough the situations are. I never give up even if I experience frustration or make errors while encountering difficult tasks or while learning something new. I always fight to master the new skills which help me in academic success. This characteristic is important because it is not based on innate talent or intelligence, but what it takes is the fortitude to learn. Encouraging students by teaching them not to give up during hard times will promote academic resilience, which in turn make them competent, confident, and successful students. In my opinion my academic resilience will be of great help for this program because as a student of online class, I should be a dedicated and goal-oriented self starter and I can expect several obstacles which are out of my control...
