Chasing a Dream Almost everybody has dreams. One person’s could be to become a researcher while another’s could be to become a professional athlete. However, my dream is to become a You-Tuber, or someone who gets paid to make You-Tube videos. You-Tube is a huge social media website where people can post anything from amateur home-made videos, to professional Hollywood quality videos for the people on the internet to view and enjoy. In a recent toll, You-Tube found that there are currently over one billion You-Tube accounts worldwide, making it one of the biggest social media websites in the world. Therefore, it is not hard to imagine how difficult it might be to stand out above the millions of people making videos to become well known on the site. Luckily, I found one of those people that not only live in the Sacramento area, but that is also a third year student at Sacramento State University. His name is Brian Nguyen, or better known as Bigbeedoh on You-Tube, and he currently has around fifty thousand subscribers on the site, which is a decent amount. We met at a Starbucks in Elk Grove, his home town. We sat outside on some heavy iron chairs around a table made of the same material. The wind chilled my bare arms as I asked Brian why he decided to make a You-Tube channel. He adjusted his baseball cap as he responded in a deep voice, “Back in high school I took this media class that I wasn’t supposed to be in, because I wanted to have lunch with my friends.” He leaned back in his chair as he thought about what had happened. “But that class required a lot of prerequisites like, I had to get on my knees and beg the teacher to let me in.” In fact, it was a third year Media Productions class intended for those who already knew a lot about film making, not those that are just beginning to learn like Brian. “But I insisted, telling her, I can learn, I can learn.” Eventually, the teacher let him in the class and he not only got to have lunch with his friends, but he also found his passion for making videos. Brian stroked the thin black facial hair on his chin as he continued with his story: “After taking the class, I learned people were making money by creating You-Tube videos so I asked my friend Aiden, ‘Would you like to go on this journey with me, this quest to become famous?’ And he said, ‘Yeah dude! Let’s do it!’” So they made a You-Tube channel called The Snowermeller Channel. However, this channel failed to gain popularity despite their efforts. Brian shook his head, “I was so desperate for subscribers that I would go to people’s channels and basically beg them to subscribe.”
“Did it work?” I asked, honestly wondering if this was an effective technique.
Brian chuckled, “Not really, the only people that subscribed only did so because they felt bad.” Furthermore, Brian’s friend, Aiden, became too involved with college when he joined a fraternity and stopped making videos with Brian. “So how did you become popular on You-Tube?” I asked, curious. Brian shrugged, “Well, naturally I drifted away from the Snowermeller channel and that’s when I created the Bigbeedoh channel. Soon after I posted my first video, a response video to another one that was trending at the time.” Brian’s voice quickened as he became excited, “In about a week, this video got about one-hundred views and I got really pumped, it was a great way to start.” But this successful beginning was short lived as none of his other videos even got close to reaching the popularity of his first. Consequently, Brian began to have doubts of his dream to become popular on You-Tube. He began wanting to just give up and stop dedicating so much time to making videos. He rubbed his arms in the cold as he spoke, “So I decided, alright, I’m gonna make one more video and if this video doesn’t pop off, I’m just gonna give up.” The video Brian made was called Hypebeast City, which today is a series of videos and Brian’s most popular series on his channel with each video averaging over one-hundred thousand views. “But, it didn’t start out that way.” Brian explained, “When I posted the video it actually only got as many views as my previous videos so I actually kept my word and stopped making videos.” It wasn’t until a month later when someone posted it on another social media site called Tumblr, and it was there where it gained popularity and started achieving ten-thousand views a day for about a week. Since the video gained so much popularity, an extremely successful You-Tuber named Timothy DeLaGhetto saw it and began promoting Brian’s You-Tube channel on his own channel which had over one million subscribers. “When Timothy likes one of my videos it really helps me out because all of his subscribers see it,” Brian said. “Most of my subscribers have come from his fan group and he has really helped me out.” When interviewing Brian I realized a few things, for one, everyone who is chasing a dream will have bumps along the way. No matter how popular or uncommon the dream is, it is almost guaranteed that it will not come easily. Even so, if you are serious about chasing it and don’t give up, you have a good chance of obtaining it. Another thing I learned is that one person can have an extreme effect on others. Hypebeast City was not popular until one person decided they should share it on Tumblr and it was because of that one person that the video gained popularity and Brian continued making videos. After Brian told me his story, I asked him what he would recommend to someone like me, who’s interested in becoming popular on You-Tube. The table made a deep ring as he pounded it with his finger, “You gotta find your thing, don’t copy others and make videos people can relate to.” I believe he’s right, people are more likely to tell their friends about your videos if they relate to them and if they can laugh about it. But he also told me another thing, “Don’t give up.” I believe this is the most important thing when it comes to chasing a dream. I know that when you try to do something unlikely, like become popular on You-Tube, people will tell you that you can’t do it but in spite of that, you need to persevere through it and at least try your best to acquire your dream. There’s one thing that I know for sure and it’s that if you don’t even try, you will never get what you want.

The Role Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby

...America is most known for the value of equality across the world. These values have totally changed, instead of striving for equality, people are desperate to get as wealthy as they possibly can be. In America where we are believed to all have equal opportunities, this idea of achieving ones desires has spread rapidly. People long for this need they have to be rich and determined to make it become possible as if it were their salvation. This idea that “anyone will achieve success through hard work” proves itself invalid (Fitzgerald). The American dream creates a false sense of expectations of a perfect life and reality. In The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald the American Dream plays a big role. So it is not shocking that this...

Death of a Salesman

...Brian Kelnhofer English/125 April 2, 2015 University of Phoenix Online Death of a Salesman Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller is one of my favorite plays growing up and one that defines history. Achieving the American dream is sought by so many people in society with little regard to what makes us truly happy. Willy Loman, the main character, works his whole life to provide financial security for his family and dreams about becoming rich only to be left with nothing at the end. The major driving theme behind the play is the American dream; which Miller points out is an allegory, the fallacy of working hard your whole lives chasing the American dream only to die a lonely and depressed man. Death of a Salesman challenges the effects of the American dream in a negative way. The American Dream All your life you are told that to be successful in life you need two things: a career and money. This I find to be the American dream falsehood that today’s society is based on. The Death of a Salesman points out the flaws in that statement. Most Americans don’t work past 72 so we spend our whole life chasing a false dream only to die an unhappy and lonely person. Allegory Willy creates an illusion of what the American dream should be like when he witnessed the accolades of Dave Singleman prolonged success. Willy pressures his children to seek the same ideals but Willy doesn’t even understand the meaning of success himself. I really connected with this part because...

American Me

...The poem American Me, written by Ninfa Miranda-Maloney, tells the story of a Mexican immigrant who comes to the United States to live the American dream. The author incorporates ethnic aspects with her use of Spanish words sprinkled in amongst the poem. With his “spit shine shoes” (Miranda-Maloney, n.d, line 10) and “brillantina-slick back hair” (Miranda-Maloney, n.d., line 11), a picture is painted of a young man’s pride in himself as he begins the journey of a lifetime. This is a young man ready for his new life in America. The tone quickly changes, however, as he probably soon realizes that the dream is not what he had in mind. In San Eli, where he “lived on thank yous and maybes” (Miranda-Maloney, n.d., line 23), the reader gets the sense that the man was taken advantage of and worked hard for little compensation. The most powerful lines in the poem are “kissed your white land, broke my back, sweat a few tears for a piece of the dream” (Miranda-Maloney, n.d., lines 27, 28, 29). The author has incorporated a racial aspect in the poem by showing referring to the white land. This is not his land, this is the “white land”. He is doing back breaking labor for “whites”, probably not what he expected as the young man full of hope chasing the American dream. The author also includes social class aspects in this poem. The poem ends with the man, now here in the United States for fifty years, still smelling the onions on his fingertips. (Miranda-Maloney, n.d.) This leads me...

I joined the United States Navy after graduating high school to chase this dream. However no matter what a recruiter tells you, being a mechanic on an aircraft is not the best way to become a pilot. I am currently 30 years old and I’m still just as fascinated with aviation as I was when I was 16. I have worked in every specialized field of Aviation there is from Avionics to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Most recently quitting an amazing six figure a year UAS job with Textron to chase my dream of finishing college and becoming a pilot. With all the options available, I can’t choose just one at this time. I want to do them all. I can say I do not want to be a UAS Operator. I know that Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) are the future of aviation but sitting in a box in the back of a truck is not a pilot.
