Cheating In Parkland

...Would you feel guilty if you received something you did not work for? Cheating is present within the student bodies of all American schools. About seventy percent of high school students have admitted to cheating, eighty percent have admitted to copying other students' homework. Cheating is a problem at Parkland high school because students are receiving grades they do not deserve, there are more consequences to cheating than students know, and they are not learning information that they need for college. One reason cheating is a problem at Parkland is students are receiving the grades that they do not deserve. Students need good grades to get into colleges. This immense pressure on them to get the passing grade causes students to feel the need to cheat because they know they will fail without doing so. Students do not know or need to know the information of the topic when they cheat on the test, but still end up getting an 'A' on the exam. The student does not deserve the 'A' because they did not study, but cheated instead. This does not make up for the information not leaned though. Therefore, students are not receiving the grades they deserve at Parkland....

Academic Honor Codes

...Research confirms recent media reports concerning the high levels of cheating that exist in many American high schools (McCabe and Pavela). This is where honor codes come in. Honor codes are used to keep the representation of their school from the students clean. They are used to prevent cheating, stealing, and policies that deal with misrepresentation. Academic Honor codes are helping students to reach their full potential by presenting the codes, disciplining the students if they violate them, and bring awareness to them on how much the violation of honor codes can hurt their future. Often times teachers will present their schools Academic Honor Codes at orientation. Although many people think that Honor Codes aren’t necessary, research...

Cheating: an Epidemic

...Cheating: An Epidemic Cheat: to break a rule or law usually to gain an advantage at something. By its very definition, cheating is breaking a rule or law to get an advantage or something you want. But what if, in today’s society, cheating was necessary to survive? What if in order to live your life to the fullest extent, you had to cheat? Would you? This is the decision that students in America are facing today. Cheating is becoming increasingly “necessary” for students in order to excel academically in America. Students in America are finding it harder and more stressful to achieve the goals they, or society, sets for themselves. In today’s America, students are expected to perform at a certain level and in some cases, are required to do so by parents, teachers, or academic institutions. The stress this put on students is enormous, and makes them paranoid about their grades. This pressure also puts students into a Machiavellian state of mind where they truly do believe that “the ends justify the means”. So what do students do? They cheat. Students cheat until they know they will get the grades they want, until they know they will impress their parents, or they cheat until they get caught. This can lead to serious problems in a child’s future, such as: cheating on a girlfriend/wife, not being able to accomplish anything without cheating, and the trust issues that can develop from cheating. Then one may ask the question, “How many students actually cheat?”. According to...

Generational Disease: Cevin Soling's Argument Against Cheating

...Disease What’s contagious, but will never make you sick? What wildfire is so great that it will never be extinguished? It isn’t a disease or natural disaster, but at the same time, it is a disease and is becoming a natural disaster to our country's youth: cheating. Although the phrase “you’re a cheater” has a negative connotation to it, is it really wrong anymore? Some, like Wired journalist, Cevin Soling, say yes while others, like Professor say no, however, the truth can’t be brushed under the rug for much longer. I believe cheating is the largest infection of my generation and will have a horrible effect on the future generations to come. Every academic institution in America has very strict policy against cheating. Last year alone, 8,000 Chinese students were expelled from U.S. universities for poor academic performance and/or cheating (Qi). Robert...

Stakeholder's Proposal

...Composition Project 2 – Stakeholder Proposal In 2012, a cheating scandal that involves approximately 125 Harvard students has provoked serious concerns about higher education system, not only within the U.S borderlines but also on a worldwide scale. The story became a hot dispute, being featured in various front page articles. It may come out as a surprise to many that the school was the most vulnerable to these mass-media attacks, rather than the students. For quite a period following the incident, when the name Harvard was mentioned, people immediately associated it with unethical behaviors instead of its well-established academic background. Furthermore, the problem did not simply ruin the reputation of a single university: the entire system was exposed under suspicions. Public trust in the real quality of education has dropped drastically ever since the Harvard scandal, prior to which was another in Atlanta public schools where high-stakes test results were counterfeited. To eradicate the epidemic has become a major challenge for the entire system, calling for efforts from all concerning parties: authorities, institutions, teachers, students, even their parents. Nevertheless, taking the widespread impact on the higher education industry into considerations, it is highly recommended that universities and colleges should be the first to take steps in the fight against academic dishonesty. “Cheating” in schools is a relatively broad concept. The phenomenon can take complicated...

Ethics in Academic Environment

...Running Head: ETHICS IN AN ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT Ethics in an Academic Environment Americans want to be more, have more, do more, and know more. America is a choleric, driven culture and that is one of the very reasons that make it such a distinguished nation. Americans in their desire for more may have compromise their ethics. Are people willing to get ahead at any cost? Most people in American society live busy, hectic lives and this affects all facets of life. In the academic environment, students face grave pressure from others as well as internally to perform well (McCabe 2001). Plagiarism is one aspect of ethics in academia where students may find themselves compromising. In a study by Bill Bowers of “over 5,000 students on 99 different campuses, 75% of the respondents had engaged in one or more incidents of academic dishonesty (McCabe, 2001, pg. 220). Although this study is a frightening and awakening find, as Carter, Bishop, and Kravits (2007) stated, “Plagiarism usually starts accidentally during research” (Chap. 8, wk.2). Time restraints, improper planning or just misinformation can all lead to plagiarism. Whether intentional or unintentional, plagiarism is still unethical and illegal. In America’s demanding and competitive society, ethics may have taken a back seat all in the name of progress. Technology has allowed people to enjoy a more advanced, more efficient quality of life, though...

Gen 300/ Skills for Professional Development

...Cheaters: In an Academic Environment GEN 300/ Skills for Professional Development Cheaters: In an Academic Environment Upholding Academic Honesty is not only ethical, but it is enforced by most institutions of higher learning. If a student should use the ideas of an outside source he or she must properly cite every resource used; fail to do so is plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious issue and seems to be getting out of hand since the technology boom. The internet has paved the way for cheating students; making writing assignments as easy as clicking a mouse. Some students in today’s world are finding it easier than ever to cheat. With websites that specialize in selling term papers to lazy students; how can teachers ensure that their students deserve the grade? High speed technology has been wonderful for our economy and way of life; however, it has also put academic honesty to the ultimate test. Before Computers Plagiarism is a crime that has been committed continually ever since the written word; the Middle Ages and Renaissance saw the continuous use of others ideas without proper recognition. Romans stealing from the Greeks, and the thousand times over, re-written versions of all the biblical books being inexactly transferred from a millennia of ancient scribes and medieval scripts. During the time of the Renaissance, thoughts and ideas were used quite regularly without due acknowledgement. Authorship did not...

Curing Plagarism

...particular has increased at an alarming rate. Schools and colleges seek to understand not only the causes for rampant plagiarism but also ways to treat it more effectively. The remedy lies in cooperation between instructors, administrators, and students: instructors should improve how they teach academic honesty, administrators should revise and publicize policies treating academic misconduct, and students should value ethics over grades. Statistics show a tremendous increase in academic dishonesty across the nation. According to a study conducted by Plagiarism.org 58.3 percent of high school students in 1969 allowed others to copy their work. In 1989, about 97.3 percent allowed their work to be copied by other students. Even more students today are copying homework answers and cheating on tests to maintain high grades. There are many causes of plagiarism. One reason is the pressure on students to achieve, varying from maintaining a high GPA in high school to get into a good college to keeping up grades while in college to hold on to scholarships (Durkin). A second reason is the competitive nature of grading: a student must be not just acceptable but better than others (Fanning 8). Plagiarism also occurs because it is socially acceptable: many students do not consider it to be cheating because all their friends are doing it. In addition, cheaters are convinced that they are not going to get caught (Lincoln 47); 95 percent of high school students who cheated were never found out...

Education

...Robbie Gutierrez English 102 04/18/13 Road to Success Once, the American educational system was viewed as the best in the world. Other countries would study our methods and try to copy them in their own countries. Today the American education system is no longer the best in the world. With decreasing test scores and poor academic achievement, people have questioned why there have not been any changes in our education system. It’s important for the upcoming generation to get an education and take back the number one rank in public education. It should be the major concern for this country, because children are the future of this country. Other industrialized countries are ranking higher in test standardized test scores compared to the U.S. Because the educational systems of other countries are better than ours, we could learn from their educational successes. The United States could benefit from implementing three things; better teacher training, emphasis math & science, and create a system of academic student tracking. America is the land of the free and the land of many opportunities. It’s a place where many people from around the world come to have a better life. America has many opportunities to offer, but it lacks on one thing, a comprehensive education system. Each year America is falling behind other countries and it’s getting worse as time goes on. The only thing we were number one in is having the most medals in the London Olympics. Furthermore, in a...

Death of Honesty

...For a number of reasons, people do not always stick to the truth when they speak. Some of the reasons are justifiable—for example, humane considerations such as tact and the avoidance of greater harm. Reassuring an ungainly teenager that he or she looks great may be a kind embroidery of the truth. In a more consequential instance, misinforming storm troopers about the whereabouts of a hidden family during the Nazi occupation of Europe was an honorable and courageous deception. Honesty is not a wholly detached moral virtue demanding strict allegiance at all times. Compassion, diplomacy, and life-threatening circumstances sometimes require a departure from the entire unadulterated truth. Some vocations seem to demand occasional deception for success or survival. Politicians, for example, are especially hard-pressed to tell the truth consistently. Perhaps this is because, as George Orwell once observed, the very function of political speech is to hide, soften, or misrepresent difficult truths. Orwell was clearly skeptical about any expectation to the contrary. In “Politics and the English Language,” he put it this way: “Political language—and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists—is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” Although in this case Orwell himself may have been guilty of overstatement for purposes of rhetorical effect, his claim cannot be totally...
