...know River and Ali and their interests. I used the information gained during this first encounter to plan lessons that incorporated each students’ interests to make their learning more appealing. After talking to their teacher and listening to both River and Ali read some of their favorite books, Guided Reading Level (GRL) A seemed an appropriate level to being instruction (Richardson, 2009; Fountas & Pinnell, 2011). I used Boushey and Moser’s 2009 Reading Conference Form to document River’s and Ali’s reading behaviors, progress, and needs, which I noticed during our meeting times. After conducting several oral reading processes,...

...that we’ve each made the same mistake as the people in this story are making with Carol. I personally have made this mistake, even carol made it and she used to complain about people doing the same thing to her. The major factors that affect the selection of information by the people who see Christa are that she is on the welfare system and that she’s a 4.0 student. The people at grocery stores or the welfare office see her as a lazy person who wont go get a job and make her own money. Her classmates see her as the hardworking dedicated 4.0 student. The two are very different after reading the story I see Christa more on the side of hardworking and dedicated. The major factor affecting Carol is her race. The fact that she’s Asian is the biggest reason people perceive her as someone else. The people who meet Christa organize the information they are given into two different groups. People out in public see her as the single mom that is on government welfare, from that they assume that she is a worthless, lazy woman who is coasting on government funds. People who meet Christa around college see her as the exceptional student. It would be interesting to see what her classmates would say if they knew about her being on welfare and if people out in public...

...Checking of an anaesthetic machine prior to use. On the morning of this particular learning experience I had already pre-informed the student of the event so we could start promptly. The student arrived on time as I did. We went straight to the operating theatre where we were going to be working for the day. On arriving in that theatre I discovered it had been used prior and was left in an untidy state so I had to tidy it up before we could proceed. Had I have thought before hand I could have checked the day before to ensure this was not the case. I started by showing the student the anaesthetic machine we were going to use, explained the different parts and how they function. The student looked a bit perplexed at the terminology I used so I tried more simple terminology and explanations and that seemed to help. After the brief explanation of how the anaesthetic machine worked I described The checks we were going to carry out. I showed the student the 2012 guide to checking the machine produced by the College of Anaesthetists which is the one we currently use. We started to check the machine going through the guide step by step as described. It took quiet a while to complete the check. Afterwards I asked the student if they followed what we had done, the student commented it was a bit too much to go through in one session. I think looking back that I should have broken down the process into perhaps two or more sessions allowing the student time to take in and question...

...undergrad, and I used it sparingly and paid it in full nearly every month. After a semester abroad, I was carrying a balance, and I took out a small bank loan to pay it off. So I had drawn on a significant amount of credit and used it responsibly. I understand that not everyone starts from this point, so my strategies may be inapplicable for many people. My goal was to keep my spending within the limits of my income and subsidized student loans. Like most grad students, I maintained a pretty austere lifestyle, but nonetheless there were times when I was forced to engage in deficit spending. My strategy for coping with the difficulties of financial management during these periods was based on three simple principles: 1. Think short-term: Long-term questions like how I was going to pay everything off were moot. The important thing was how I was going to keep meeting my immediate obligations until the next influx of cash came. 2. Favor liquidity: Given my access to credit, the only hard constraint was the availability of cash (meaning money in my checking account). If given a choice between going further into debt or making a cash payment that would quickly put me at risk of not being able to meet another cash obligation, I always chose going further into debt. 3. Preserve the credit rating: This meant always paying every bill by whatever means necessary. If I missed a single payment, that could lead to a decline in my credit-worthiness, leading to higher minimum payments and...

...Subject: Advanced Teaching Methodology Instructor: Dr. Nguyen Thu Huong Student: Nguyen Le Ba Tong Class: TESOL 13B REFLECTION PAPER That ‘teaching is simply the process of transferring knowledge from teachers to students’ is what I used to think. However, since I started studying Advanced Teaching Methodology, my point of view has changed dramatically. The course has provided me with valuable knowledge which not only broadens my horizons but also help me develops my own professional competence. This paper will focus on some main points of the course including theories about learners’ characteristics and influences of the setting as well as important pedagogical approaches and techniques, and demonstrate how they help to shape my teaching style. The very first lesson in the course was about learners’ characteristics. Lightbown and Spada (2006) have mentioned some factors such as ‘intelligence, aptitude, learning style, personality, motivation, attitudes, identity, beliefs and age’ which may affect the language learning ability and the teaching process. Talking about ‘intelligence’ and ‘aptitude’, they explained that individuals have different strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, a method which is effective in teaching a group of learners may prove to be ineffective when applied to another. Learning vocabulary by memorizing, for instance, seems to be suitable for ones who have good memory but not for those who lack this ability. Learners also have different learning ‘styles’...

...Analyzing Running Records Qualitative analysis involves looking at the reading behavior. The teacher looks for behavior evidence of cue use and evidence of the use of strategies such as cross-checking information and searching for cues. She examines each incorrect attempt and self-correction and hypothesizes about the cues or information sources the child might have been using. In Clay's analysis, cues refer to the sources of information. There are three major categories: Meaning- The teacher thinks about whether the child's attempt makes sense up to the point of error. She might think about the story background, information, from the picture, and meaning in the sentence in deciding whether the child was probably using meaning as a source. Structure-Structure refers to the way language works. Some refer to this information source as syntax because unconscious knowledge of the rules of the grammar of the language the reader speaks allows him to eliminate alternatives. Using this implicates knowledge, the reader checks whether the sentence "sounds right." Visual information- Visual information includes the way the letters and words look. Readers use their knowledge of visual features of words and letters and connect these features to their knowledge of the way words and letters sound when spoken. If the letters in the child's attempt are visually similar to the letters in the word in the text (for example, if it begins with the same letter or has a similar cluster of letters)...

...the Brightland island residents. BLSC is the sole provider for all of the Brightland residents electrical needs. However, due to the decline in tourism, net income from electric revenues have remained flat despite price increases. In order to supplement BLSC’s revenue stream the company decided to diversify it's portfolio in 2007. Today BLSC, runs several businesses: shipping company (BOATS), insurance company (PICO), banking operations (MM), as well as an electric company (BIEGO) which all operate in Brightland. Market Analysis The island economy of Brightland has a population of 350,000 and its main source of revenue comes from tourism and agriculture. The target market for our 4 businesses will include residents, tourists, and students. BIEGO electricity sales have been flat due the decline in tourism and new efficient appliances, which have reduced the consumption. Residents have made it clear that they would like the island of Small Bright to remain in pristine condition and for the company to become more energy efficient. Biego will need to switch from fuel oil to gas to maintain the company’s corporate citizen responsibility. To convert the plant from fuel oil to gas feed requires a $65 million investment from company. Recommendations There are significant opportunities for BLSC to grow in each of its 4 industries: BIEGO- Biego will invest $65 million to convert the plant fuel oil to gas feed. Biego will need to temporarily raise prices by 5% to recover...
