The Cheesecake Factory: Small Business to Big Business The Cheesecake Factory is a restaurant known today across the United States and is starting to expand to the overseas market. Today, the restaurant offers over 30 varieties of cheesecakes as well as over 250 other menu items. What started out as a small business run from Evelyn
Overton’s basement has grown into one of the top publicly traded restaurants in the country. In this paper, I am going to take you from a small basement in Detroit, Michigan to a global operation envisioned by Evelyn’s and still run by Evelyn’s son David.

In the 1940s, Evelyn Overton found a cheesecake recipe in a local newspaper. This recie inspired the recipe for her “Original Cheesecake”, which she began selling to local restaurants after she made a dozen of them to give away as Christmas gifts for her husband, Oscar’s, boss. She opened a small shop but soon closed it and moved her baking equipment to her basement so that she would be home to take care of her family. In 1972, after their children were grown, Oscar and Evelyn decided to pack up everything and move to Los Angeles to make another attempt at owning their own business. It took the last of their savings, but they opened the first Cheesecake Factory Bakery and sold to restaurants in L.A. As the business started to grow, Evelyn started to offer over 20 different varities of her cheesecakes and other desserts. In
1975, David, Oscar and Evelyn’s son, moved frfom San Fransisco to L.A. to help his parents.
David envisioned a restaurant with his mother’s chhesecakes s the main attraction. He took this idea to his accountant Bill King, and after speaking with him, they were able to attain the start up capital of $125,000
