Energy is the ability of matter to do work. Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. Potential energy is energy that is stored and ready to do work and kinetic energy is energy in motion. Energy comes in different forms: light, heat, electrical, chemical, and mechanical. This energy can be converted from one form to another and this is called the first law of thermodynamics. This law states that energy can change from one form to another but it is neither created anew nor destroyed. The sun is solar energy and gives us light energy and heat energy. The wheat as a plant absorbs the light energy and converts it to a chemical energy. This is known as photosynthesis. The wheat captures the suns light energy in the bonds of the glucose molecule. A chemical breakdown occurs called glycolysis. To harvest the wheat it takes kinetic energy, the physical labor of the farmer. It also uses a chemical energy, the gasoline to fuel the machinery to harvest the wheat. The wheat is then broken down and mixed with yeast at the bakery. This causes a chemical reaction and the bread rises. Electricity is used to bake the bread; this is a chemical reaction. A physical change takes place as the bread cooks, using thermal energy. When the bread is ready for consumption kinetic energy in the form of mastication occurs. A physical and chemical reaction takes place simultaneously. The bread is physically broken down into smaller pieces and a chemical reaction occurs. The glycogen is then broken down to be used as energy in the cells.
