Rate of evaporation

Research question
How does surface area of ethanol in contact with atmosphere affect the rate of evaporation of fixed volume of ethanol?

Variables

- Independent variable
Surface area of ethanol in contact with atmosphere. I’m going to do this by varying radius of different test tubes, beakers and other materials which is presented in the lab.

- Dependent Variable
The rate of evaporation. I’m going to measure this by the change of mass of ethanol over a period of time.

- Controlled Variables
Wind. When executing the experiment, the wind will affect the rate of evaporation (The stronger the wind, the more evaporation) so I’m going to carry out my experiment in the fume cupboard.

Temperature. I want to keep the temperature at all times the constant since the temperature affects the rate of evaporation. I ‘m going to do this, by conducting my experiment in a temperature controlled liquid incubator.

Humidity. I would like to keep this a constant as well but I unable to do so. Instead I’m going to instead monitor and record the humidity levels while conducting the experiment using a hygrometer.

Equipments required
 Temperature controlled incubator
 Hygrometer
 5 different radius shaped apparatuses
 Ethanol
 Balance
 Test tube rack

Method
First off, start by collecting apparatus which is circular shapes (at least 5) and has different radiuses; this will be having effects in the surface area of ethanol which is in contact with the atmosphere.
Then pour in ethanol in all the beakers (Volume doesn’t matter but a reliable amount), test tubes etc... Now weigh each and every circular apparatus and note the mass.
Then set up all the circular shaped apparatus in the temperature controlled incubator so that the temperature and the wind doesn’t affect the rate of evaporation.
Record the humidity using the hygrometer inside the temperature controlled incubator and make a note of it.
Now start heating the incubator and keep the temperature constant at 35C. Wait for 10 minutes, and then take out all the circular shaped apparatus and measure the mass of each. Get your friends to help you because ethanol is volatile so when you take it out it may evaporate and the chance of uncertainty will go up.
Repeat this at least 3 times so that we can get reliable and precise data avoiding any random errors.
