While the growth of tobacco, rice, and indigo, and the plantation economy greatly increased, it then created a tremendous need for labor in Southern English America. We now have technical machinery to do most of our work, but in the 1600’s blood and sweat was what was used for plantation, up keep, and harvesting the cash crops that were being grown. Slaves were present in the English colonies in 1600, but indentured slaves were what many planters wanted before the 1680’s. The system that was being used to provide incentives for both the master and servant to increase the working population of the Chesapeake colonies.
As an indentured servant, I would have my way across the Atlantic paid in full by my master. Being bought by a man who would trade goods for my life. A contract had been written that stipulated the length of service that I would work for him— typically five years. I would be given a room and board while working for the master in his fields. Upon completion of the contract, I would receive "freedom dues," a pre-arranged termination bonus. Which might include land, money, a gun, clothes or food. It seemed like a terrific way for the luckless English poor to make their way to prosperity in a new land. But this was not often the case.

Some of the pros are - our masters needs us around and so we are being treated better than most regular slaves. We have clothes on our backs and food in our mouths. We are not malnourished. If our masters did not feed us then we would not be able to work as hard or as well that our masters need. We have a roof over our heads, we are not wondering, worried, where our next meal will come from or where we will lay our heads to sleep. But being taken from our families, being transported across the ocean to be used. Being used as a working hand and not having contact with our families back home.
