Chester Himes

Chester Bomar Himes, through countless downfalls, created impacting detective stories about racial injustice. Himes, born on July 29, 1909, grew up as the youngest of two brothers in Jefferson, Missouri. His father’s teaching career made the family travel from state to state, eventually to Ohio. In Cleveland, Himes attended Glenville High School, where he became involved in fights and treated as a social outcast. In addition to his misfortunate school experience, Himes witnessed another injustice to a family member. In the aftermath of a chemistry demonstration, his brother became permanently blind. The local hospital refused to treat him seemingly because of his race. This unfair experience impacted a plethora of Himes’
