Chewing Gum Persuasive Speech

Do you ever like something so much that is bad for your health? Well, I know it sucks. But that is life, ladies and gentlemen. After reading this article, I’m sure you wouldn’t want to touch gum for at least a little while. I know what you are going to say. "Now you're taking away my gum, too?!" After all, chewing gum seems like such a harmless—habit. You want something sweet? Pop a stick of gum for less than 5 calories Stressed? Chew a couple sticks of gum. Feeling hungry? Chomp some gum while you think about your options. What’s not to like? Well today I’ll be telling you what’s there not to like.
People in general want to be fit. Even though some of us might adore junk food, we still try to avoid it as much as possible. Some of you might think that gum is a good method of losing weight, since you are …show more content…
Did you know that gum includes Lanolin, an ingredient that keeps chewing gum soft. It doesn't sound too bad until you find out it's a yellow waxy substance secreted by the glands of sheep. Known as "wool fat," couldn’t get any better? Yeah?

1. Nope I am not done yet, you might not pay much attention to the ingredients in chewing gum because, after all, it's not actually swallowed. But the ingredients, many of which are potentially dangerous, do enter your body, directly through the walls of your mouth. Did you know that gums include artificial sweeteners? Most chewing gum is sweetened with aspartame. Long term use of aspartame has been linked with cancer, diabetes, birth defects and other disorders.
And the last disadvantage ill be talking about in my speech is the tooth damage that is caused by gum. If your chewing gum contains sugar, you're essentially "bathing" your teeth in sugar while you chew away. Even if it was sugar free, it would still cause damages because of the artificial sweeteners and all that.
In conclusion, I know it sucks to give up on things we like, but I think that our health is much more important. Thank

Fahrenheit 9/11 Analysis

...The documentary genre allows filmmakers to put forward a biased account of events. Michael Moore is one such filmmaker that has exploited this genre. In his latest documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11, Moore presents a biased recount of the Iraq war. Analysis of Fahrenheit 9/11, in particular chapter eight, demonstrates the subjective nature of the documentary genre. Moore exploits a toolkit of persuasive techniques to position viewers to accept his own values and beliefs regarding the war. Moore creates three distinct, biased representations in the chapter; he represents George Bush and his administration as deceitful warmongers, Iraq as a sovereign nation suffering at the hands of US oppression and American soldiers as both unsympathetic idiots and as mere pawns that are experiencing the horror of war. Together, these representations uphold Moore's political agenda of the time; to discredit Bush and his administration, to depict the US decision to invade Iraq as a foreign policy abomination, all with the ultimate goal to sway the public from re-electing Bush in 2004. Chapter eight opens with a shot of bombs being readied for deployment, immediately followed by Bush receiving attention to his hair. The alternation between wartime preparations and the cheeky smile of the president continues until Bush addresses his nation. By juxtaposing the serious subject-matter of war with a president who is apparently more concerned with appearances, Moore represents Bush as being superficial and...

...involves forced simulated drowning. Less remarkable, perhaps, but possibly more relevant for most of us, we’ve heard the term “downsized” used when someone is fired or laid off. “Ethnic cleansing” covers everything from deportation to genocide. What we have to say may be important, but the words we choose to say it with can be equally important. The examples just given are cases of a certain type of linguistic coercion—an attempt to get us to adopt a particular attitude toward a subject that, if described differently, would seem less attractive to us. Words have tremendous persuasive power, or what we have called their rhetorical force or emotive meaning—their power to express and elicit images, feelings, and emotional associations. In the next few chapters, we examine some of the most common rhetorical techniques used to affect people’s attitudes, opinions, and behavior. Rhetoric refers to the study of persuasive writing. As we use the term, it denotes a broad category of linguistic techniques people use Moore−Parker: Critical Thinking, Ninth Edition 5. Persuasion Through Rhetoric: Common Devices and...

...ISSN 1648-2824 KALBŲ STUDIJOS. 2006. 9 NR. * STUDIES ABOUT LANGUAGES. 2006. NO. 9 The Language of Advertising: Analysis of English and Lithuanian Advertising Texts Jurgita Vaičenonienė Annotation. The spread of globalization and marketing during the last century triggered the proliferation of advertising genres. The goal of advertisements is to persuade consumers to act or think in a textually determined way in order to boost sales of particular commodities and services. In order to capture attention, convey the message and persuade the consumer, advertising texts use a range of manipulative language devices. Moreover, different cultures may have different expectations with regard to stylistic choices, language use and other preferences in the same genre. Hence the aim of the article is to analyze the language of advertising in English and Lithuanian in order to estimate the specificities of the advertising genre in the two different cultural and linguistic systems. The approach employed in the study draws on the ideas of the functionalist interpretation of text typology and source text analysis as proposed by Nord (1997) and Reiss (2000). The functionalist approach provides an in-depth understanding of the source and target text conventions and functions which are prerequisites for successful intercultural communication and translation. The means to accomplish the task of the present article is the analysis of a comparable corpus of data consisting of 100 English...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...

...Introductory Marketing Place Chapter 11 Armstrong/ Kotler Marketing: An Introduction  Marketing Channels and Supply Chain Management I. The Nature of Distribution Channels Channels of Distribution is known as "Place" in the "4 P's" model of Marketing. Distribution Channels provide the utility of place, of having products where the customer wants when the customer wants them. In these days of customer focus and emphasis on competition, the 4 P's model is considered very simplistic, and I've always thought that was probably why Marketers began referring to Place as Channels, to move us away from "The "4 P's" as a description of all of what Marketing is about; nevertheless, "place" is a convenient way to think of the term Channels of Distribution. |Distribution is particularly important in a country |[pic] | |like Canada with our huge size and our northern | | |climate. Brave New World - Aldous Huxley

...Chapter One A SQUAT grey building of only thirty-four stories. Over the main entrance the words, CENTRAL LONDON HATCHERY AND CONDITIONING CENTRE, and, in a shield, the World State's motto, COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, STABILITY. The enormous room on the ground floor faced towards the north. Cold for all the summer beyond the panes, for all the tropical heat of the room itself, a harsh thin light glared through the windows, hungrily seeking some draped lay figure, some pallid shape of academic gooseflesh, but finding only the glass and nickel and bleakly shining porcelain of a laboratory. Wintriness responded to wintriness. The overalls of the workers were white, their hands gloved with a pale corpse-coloured rubber. The light was frozen, dead, a ghost. Only from the yellow barrels of the microscopes did it borrow a certain rich and living substance, lying along the polished tubes like butter, streak after luscious streak in long recession down the work tables. "And this," said the Director opening the door, "is the Fertilizing Room." Bent over their instruments, three hundred Fertilizers were plunged, as the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning entered the room, in the scarcely breathing silence, the absent-minded, soliloquizing hum or whistle, of absorbed concentration. A troop of newly arrived students, very young, pink and callow, followed nervously, rather abjectly, at the Director's heels. Each of them carried a notebook, in which, whenever the great man spoke, he desperately...
