Chicago Public School Analysis

In May 2013 there was a proposal to shut down at least fifty Chicago Public Schools from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposal. As stated in the Chicago Tribune, Emanuel said that he was voting to close these schools because they were “underperforming and underutilized” (Study Looks at Aftermath of Chicago School Closings in 2013). Schools that are underperforming are ones that are on probation, lack the student body needed, or show low test scores. Most of the schools closed are located in low-income communities where students majority are African-Americans or Hispanics. Therefore, elementary school closings in the South side of Chicago, which affect minority groups, are the greatest threat to justice in Chicago, because it’s a bigger struggle to …show more content…
In a study conducted by the University of Chicago, it was found that families enrolled their children at low performing schools because the high performing schools hey were designated was too far from where they lived (De La Torre 4). These parents had no alternative but to enroll their kids in low performing schools because they don’t want to travel far due to security reasons and gang rivalry between neighborhoods. Now these parents have to worry about their kids getting taught well or getting the education they need because they are at a lower performing school, which is a disadvantage. In the report Twelve Months Later: The Impact of School Closings in Chicago states, “[cps] has put 16,000,000 for the Safe Passage on the way to school, but none of these have been evaluated”(Caref 11). It’s useful that they put the money there, but it makes no difference that they have not evaluated the programs, which makes it intimidating for parents who have to cross different neighborhoods with the risk of getting hurt. As we know now, gang violence is everywhere just because they think you represent something they will confront you. For example, if you are in the Little Village area and you are wearing black and beige the gangbangers will confront you and tell you to get out that neighborhood. The Little Village area is known to be controlled by the Latin Kings, but the neighboring K-Town as its known is controlled by the Two-Six. The separation of these boundaries is just west of Lawndale Street. There is many kids who go to Little Village Lawndale High School in the Two-Six neighborhood whom live on streets like: Christiana, Trumbull, St.Louis, and run the risk of being confused as a Latin King without being of any gang. These students go through this day by day risking their

...Yuliana Liveris Dr. Ana Close English 102 F 04/29/2014 Enlarging Two Languages for the Education in Chicago’s School Having bilingual education in nursery school across Illinois is a valuable practice for children because it is important to acquire two languages with eloquence. Bilingualism is often related to immigration, and this element has developed particular views of approaches to bilingual education in the Chicagoland area. The most important is the distension of the young non-Native English speakers in the early learning. When the children are 3-5 years old going to preschool, Chicago public school places them into bilingual classes because they are identified as dual language learning. By using different theories from the sociological perspective, the set of interrelation of social and pedagogical purposes can be understand from the bilingual classes of preschool in Chicago. First, functionalist perspective emphasizes the interconnection between the different parts that are involved in bilingual education, and how they work together to produce a negative or positive influence. Second, the home culture as the standard focuses its viewpoint by criticizing the value of foreign culture by using the home culture inside the bilingual language and its benefits. Finally, conflict perspective focuses how society presents itself by using power and conflict over the resources and rules of the bilingual classes. Therefore, the sociology perspective can explain the increased...

Economics as Science

...ics Economics as a Science and its relevance to Law Economics is the branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption, and transfer of wealth. It is the condition of a region or group as regards material prosperity. It is the social science that analyzes the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Now the Question is whether Economics is a science or not? Economics is a science that treats of those social phenomena that are due to wealth getting and wealth using activities of Man. The word ―Economics‖ is derived from the Greeks word ―Oikonomos‖ which means to manage the house. So it means the management of a household especially in those matters, which are relating to the income and expenses of the family. After sometime, political economy term was also used for this topic and slowly political economy adopted the shape of Economics. There are numerous definitions of Economics offered from time to time but there is no clear and concise definition. Keeping in view this situation J.M. Keynes has rightly, stated ―Political Economy is said to have strangled itself with definition.‖ However, Economics is considered to be a science as well as an art. Some of its features like, self corrective nature, systematic body of knowledge, own laws and theories, universal validity of its laws (law of demand, marginal utility, law of diminishing returns etc) support economics to be a science, but its other features like lack of predictability and lack of...

...in mentioning that ensuring that no group have control over the range of alternatives discussed within the political system is a requisite for democracy. In his study of New Haven he explicitly raises the question of agenda setting, noting that with a permeable political system virtually all significant issues would likely come to the attention of the elites. ‘Because of the ease with which the political stratum can be penetrated, whenever dissatisfaction builds up in some segment of the electorate party politicians will probably learn of the discontent and calculate whether it might be converted into a political issue with an electoral pay-off’ (Dahl 1961, p. 93). In Dahl’s view, then, any issue with a significant potential following in the public would likely find an elite-level champion, though he also notes that issues with no large-scale electoral pay-off might never enter the agenda. 1. Conflict Expansion E. E. Schattschneider (1960) focused attention on how political debates often grow from the conflict of two actors, the more disadvantaged of whom may have an incentive to ‘socialize’ the conflict to a broader political arena. Of course, the more...

DUQUE THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction There is a substantial literature on the relationship between teacher characteristics and student learning. Most prior research on this topic has focused on teachers’ educational background, years of teaching experience and salaries. The results of this work are mixed. While it is clear that certain teachers are more effective than others at increasing student performance, there is considerably less consensus on whether specific, observable teacher characteristics such as education or experience produce higher performance. While most research has focused on general skills, school districts and states often rely on in-service staff development as a way to improve student learning. This on-the-job training seeks to instruct teachers in content as well as pedagogy. Professional development is an extremely widespread practice in U.S. Public Schools. 72 percent of teachers report having engaged...

...Chicago Street Gangs The City of Chicago is home to many iconic sites and famous things including Wrigley Field, Giordano’s deep dish pizza, Navy Pier, Portillos, and Willis Tower. Chicago residents live and work in some of the most affluent, wealthy, and glamorous neighborhoods like The Gold Coast and River North. Over the last couple of years though, the spotlight has been shifted from all of Chicago’s wonderful things to its poverty stricken neighborhoods, rising crime rate, murders, and drug problems. All of these things can be linked to what many consider Chicago’s biggest problem, street gangs. But today the city seems to be far more segregated and full of poverty in neighborhoods that are home to minorities. Many adults turn to the streets to make a living and children see their elders and in return do the same. These same poor neighborhoods have a failing public education system for the youth along with a bad relationship with police. According to the Chicago Crime Commission, “a 2012 Chicago Police Department gang audit found there are more than 600 gang factions in the city, with a minimum combined membership of 70,000” (cbsnews.com). With the large number of gang members in the city there is a lot of fighting going on over turf for control of drug distribution. This is mainly a problem occurring in minority communities all throughout Chicago. “201 of the 259 homicide victims were African-American” (chicagotribune.com). While blacks make up about 33 percent of the...

...a role in cases; which were later overturned by DNA testing. Unlike other forensic methods, serology has been subjected to rigorous scientific testing to achieve validation. Even still, these methods can be inaccurately conducted or counterfactually conveyed during the trial (Innocence Project, 2012). Since the evidence presented during a trial can be the difference between freedom, and incarceration in many cases and death in some cases, misconduct in the forensic field is not tolerated. Some types of forensic misconduct include exaggeration of statistics, false testimony and laboratory fraud. Evidence offered by forensic scientists is often called “expert testimony”. Nevertheless, what is an expert? Is it someone who has gone to school and earned an undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degree? Alternatively, could it be someone whom has many years of “on the job training”? The answer depends on whom you ask. Regardless of who is asked, the testimony given by forensic scientists are typically given more weight than other evidence. The articulation of the findings almost always makes a difference in how the case is decided. When misconduct occurs, it is often...

...enforcement is much different than individuals who reside in more affluent neighborhoods. “In many communities, children from the lower socioeconomic class are targeted by law enforcement practices more than are children of the middle and upper classes” (Bartol & Bartol, 2014, p. 33) Impoverished environments also connect the individuals who reside in them to other issues which make the risk factor of poverty even more complex. According to the text (Bartol & Bartol, 2014) attending inadequate schools, not completing school, being unemployed, carrying a firearm, being victimized, along with being a witness to violent crimes are more likely to occur when an individual lives in poverty. The articles “Public housing, concentrated poverty, and crime” (Hartley, 2014) and “”Aboriginal street gangs a product of poverty and neglect” (Comack, Deane, Morrisette, & Silver, 2013) both describe in detail the connection between the risk factor poverty and criminal activity.
