Chicken Run Wild

...As members of our modern, globalized society, we are continuously exposed to a variety of magazine articles, television and radio shows and other forms of online media that bombard—and often confuse—us with contradictory information. One research report negates what another confirmed to be proven true, leaving us in quite a quandary as we seek to form and follow healthy habits. I, too, was once lost in the quagmire of modern media when it came to health. Having encountered, studied, practiced and then taught Ayurveda, however, I now feel certain about how we can not only obtain, but sustain, amazing health. Ayurveda is a Time-Tested Science Whereas our modern medical system is relatively new, and therefore, continuously in a state of change and flux, Ayurveda, India’s ancient medical system, has been around for 5,000 years, proving as effective today as it was thousands of years ago. The reason many of us may not have heard of it is because Ayurveda was banned for many years by the British colonists. Because it delivers incredible results where other systems of medicine often fail, Ayurveda is seeing a great resurgence in our era. In my own life, I truly believe that only Ayurveda, with its four-dimensional approach to healing (addressing body, mind, soul and senses), could help me overcome anorexia nervosa: a problem that involves all four dimensions. Ayurveda Gives Equal Emphasis To Health Promotion While being a complete medical system (one of the original...

Cougars on the Bay

...show on Wednesday, September 19 started with Eric Andre running out on stage throwing beer, sandwiches, what seemed to be chicken carcasses, and many other objects out into the crowd as he jumped off stage and began to run through the dense mass of people pushing, shoving, and simply making a riot amongst the observers. He disappeared and shortly after appeared back on stage fully naked running around the set. Things slowly settled down and it was time for his first guest, Russell Brandt. The crowd grew eager and when he finally came on stage, it was clear that it was in fact not he. Either that, or Russell Brandt changed his image to that of a malnourished Philadelphian homeless person. Once on stage “Brandt” sang a song, in what seemed to be English accompanied by a plastic guitar and a 2 liter bottle filled with some unknown foamy liquid that eventually also ended up in the crowd. His next two guests consisted of a local juggler and Freeway, who is a native rapper of North Philadelphia. It was clear that neither of the two were aware of what they were actually participating in. Right as the juggler was about to begin his performance, the lights dimmed and Doc Chicken emerged. This was nothing more than a rubber chicken with a stethoscope that was dropped from the ceiling, but it caused the crowd erupt in a frenzy shouting “Doc Chicken, Doc Chicken,” all while fist pumping and dancing. During this insanity, the juggler on stage clearly had no idea what was ensuing so...

Organizational Structure

...Organizational Structure Melissa Moran XMGT/230 July 5, 2015 Carol Dimopoulos The organizational structure that I choose is when I worked at Popeye’s Louisiana fried chicken. They had very strict set guidelines to follow and the outline of the structure was very obvious. Had the executive, managers, shift leads, employees and rookies. If any issues came up you had to talk to the manager or if the manager had issues with you they came and told you. Was very tense environment and didn’t seem like an employee or rookie could speak their minds. Now this structure compared to say a school environment and a dairy farm environment would be good to compare and contrast. Within a school environment everyone is treated the same with respect and everyone listens to each other and if someone has an idea to make the system run better they are open to it. Just because there is a high power (principle) doesn’t mean his way is the only way. He just is the deciding factor on whether it is going to be the right thing for the school or something that will harm the school too much. With working for the Dairy they are little in and out it seems on their organizations structure. With a dairy farm it is broken down from bosses to managers to shift leads and employees but there is little to no room for advancement within the company once an employee always an employee no matter the length of time that have worked for the company. That probably is the thing that stands out the most from Popeye’s, working...

America's Obsession with Fast Food

...America’s Obsession with Fast Food When people all over the world are looking for a quick, easy meal to grab on the go, fast food is the most popular solution. On any given day, about twenty-five percent of Americans visit fast food restaurants for burgers, fries, and sodas, the staples of the all-American fast food fix. The big question is, why? What lures so many people to purchase and consume food that is known to be grossly unhealthy, or better yet allow their families to consume? The answer is simple: it’s easy, it’s filling, it’s convenient and it’s inexpensive. In today’s world, most households are two- income households, meaning both parents work. Paired with after school activities and the shear time it takes to ensure that homework and bathes are done, driving through a fast food restaurant sounds pretty enticing. The bargain hunting mentality is one of the primary drivers in America’s fast food obsession. In today’s economic woes, Americans are always looking for deals. At this point, value becomes more important than nutrition. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, consumption of French fries, mainly purchased from fast food restaurants, increased by 63 percent between the 1970s and 1990s, and Americans consumed an average of 152 pounds of added sugars in 2000. Junk food is often high in unhealthy fats, sugar, sodium and/or calories, so gaining an understanding of what draws Americans to it is interesting and most can relate. ...
