CHICKENS OF THE SEA

Not long ago, a friend once told me that he heard Jessica Simpson say on television, that a brand of canned tuna called “Chicken of the Sea” literally means, chickens that live in the sea. As we all know chickens cannot naturally live in the sea due to their physical deficiencies in water. In other words, the only way chickens could live under the sea is if the company invested billions into undersea chicken farms. For example, They could build giant undersea domes just like Sandy Peaches, in the hit kids television show “Spongebob Squarepants”. Furthermore the labeling itself states quite clearly that the food product contained in the tin is in fact tuna. Now, if the label didn’t say anything about tuna on the front It would be very easy to confuse the product with chicken, but that is not the case for this specific brand. In addition, tuna in general is very different from chicken in so many aspects, that it is really hard to confuse tuna with chicken. The textures, colors, and taste are so different that anyone who has ever eaten both tuna and chicken, could easily differentiate between the two products. Jessica Simpson’s statement is a falsehood that can be proven wrong with simple observation. First, chickens cannot live in the sea due to the fact that they have evolved on land for millions of years. Everything about their bodies have been finely tuned for living life on the surface of the world. Resulting in different organs compared to marine animals, which allow

Shim Pg. 2 them to live a very efficient life on land, but a quick death underneath the depths of the deep sea. Chickens get their oxygen from the atmosphere through the process of respiration. Utilizing lungs that contain aveoli which allow passive diffusion of oxygen molecules into the bloodstream. Another fact is that they have feathers which have a hollow tubing structure. Consequently, making it impossible for a chicken to even go underneath water, due to its buoyancy properties. Not to mention the fact that their feet are not optimized for pushing water away therefore making them slow and easy targets for predators. In which case, duck feet would be perfect for this problem because they contain webbing which gives their feet more surface area to propel themselves through the water. Also chickens eat worms and bugs that live on land, so what would they be able to eat under water that would satisfy their daily nutritional requirements? One idea would be that they could eat sea cucumbers, because these sea creatures contain vitamins and are easy to eat on account of their soft bodies, but that would be ridiculous.

Second, just by observing the label itself, you can see many clues that lead to the conclusion that the product inside is indeed tuna, or at least a fish product. A label can contain valuable information, such as nutritional facts. When you look at the label you can clearly see the word “tuna” printed on the front, and again in small print stating that this tuna is “the best tuna”. The label also claims that the product inside is full of “heart healthy omega 3” and to my knowledge, chicken does not contain omega 3, or at least enough to make it something to advertise. A quick initial glance at the ingredients list, shows that tuna is listed as the main ingredient, while chicken is nowhere to be found. Another clue is that

Shim Pg. 3 chicken, usually is not packed in small tins, as this would be an inefficient way of packing chicken. To be honest, I have never seen chicken already cooked and canned in a tin; they are usually always raw and packed in styrofoam plates with plastic wrap.

Third, if you were Jessica Simpson and thought that you were going to get a can full of chicken you would be sadly mistaken. Chicken and tuna do not taste the same, nor do they have the same texture or color. When you open a can of Chicken of the Sea tuna, you immediately know that this product is not chicken. The first sense to get offended is your sense of smell; as a rotten fishy smell wafts into your nose. Immediately following, your sense of sight gets offended as you see a pinkish grey goopy mess that looks like someone pre-chewed the meat for you ahead of time. When you drain the liquid out and take a taste, you immediately know that this is not chicken. While chewing this somewhat chalky dry protein, you will notice that the texture is definitely not the same as chicken; It just falls apart in your mouth, while chicken on the other hand needs at least some chewing action. Initially, when you are done eating you are naturally sad, because you just ate pink chalky goop, but later on in the day you will thank yourself for having such a healthy meal.

To conclude, I have proved Jessica wrong with the powers of observation. Yes, maybe if a person took an initial glance at the label they might mistake it for chicken, but that’s only if they’re Jessica Simpson. Hopefully I have convinced my readers that Chicken of the Sea tuna is not made from chickens, but from tuna, or at least that’s what the company claims on their advertising. Maybe one day in the future, some diver will discover herds of roaming chickens in the ocean. You would see happy bald chickens swimming

Shim Pg. 4 through the water with their duck feet, and eating sea cucumbers. One can only hope to see such an amazing sight in their lifetime. The very concept of Chickens under the sea, brings about a sense of awe and amazement, which leaves one speechless.

Chicken of the Sea

...________________________________________________________________________________________ Chicken of the Sea International The Jessica Simpson Spokesperson Decision [pic] _______________________________________________________________________________________ This case was written by Professor George E. Belch and Michael A. Belch. It is intended to be used as the basis for class discussion rather than to illustrate either effective or ineffective handling of a management situation. Introduction Chicken of the Sea International (COSI) is one of the oldest seafood companies in the United States. The company processes and markets a variety of seafood items under the Chicken of the Sea brand name including canned tuna, salmon, sardines, mackerel, crab, and clam products. The original company was founded in 1914 by Frank Van Camp and his son who bought the California Tuna Canning Company to can albacore tuna and changed the name to the Van Camp Seafood Company. However, the company began using the Chicken of the Sea trademark and brand name as a way to describe the taste of its tuna to consumers. Van Camp was the first company to can "light" tuna. So consumers would know to expect a mild-flavored white fish – that tasted similar to chicken – the company marketed it under the brand name Chicken of the Sea. It was such a success that the company eventually adopted the product name. The company operated under the Van Camp Seafood...

Chicken of the Sea International the Jessica Simpson Spokesperson Decision

...Jonnie-Lynn Massingale Week 2 Case Study Chicken of the Sea International (COSI): The Jessica Simpson Spokesperson Decision March 27, 2016 1. Discuss the consumer decision making process for a product such as canned/packaged tuna and the response hierarchy model this is most likely to be applicable in the purchase of this product. Due to the modification away from media advertising, the decision making process has changed significantly. When media advertising was substantial with COSI and StarKist, consumers had become familiar to seeing the ads and their individual icons. Consumers were very loyal to a specific brand and the loyalty grew out of the familiar icons. Now that the focus has changed to mainly print ads, promotions-in-store, and coupons, there is more to keep the consumer decision making process busy. A product such as canned tuna is not a necessity, and therefore can easily be replaced by another product. There is more competitiveness now that a consumer could just pick a brand because it is the cheapest at a particular store or because they found a coupon in an advertisement. Brand loyalty is no longer being pushed into consumers’ minds through commercial spots. Now, companies are pushing more promotions and discounts to increase sales, but the end result is that for some consumers, each trip to the store could result in a different brand being purchased. Also, consumers are now being reached at home through direct mail advertising such as newspaper ads...

Chickans

...Dis is a chikan: The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a domesticated fowl, a subspecies of the red junglefowl. As one of the most common and widespread domestic animals, with a population of more than 24 billion in 2003,[1] there are more chickens in the world than any other species of bird. Humans keep chickens primarily as a source of food, consuming both their meatand their eggs. The earliest known domestication occurred in Northern China 8,000 BCE determined from archaeological chicken bones.[2]Previously genetic studies have pointed to multiple maternal origins in Southeast, East, and South Asia, but with the cladefound in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa originating in the Indian subcontinent. From India, the domesticated chicken was imported to Lydia in western Asia Minor, and to Greece by the fifth century BC.[3] Fowl had been known in Egypt since the mid-15th century BC, with the "bird that gives birth every day" having come to Egypt from the land between Syria and Shinar, Babylonia, according to the annals of Thutmose III.[4][5][6] n the UK and Ireland adult male chickens over the age of one year are primarily known as cocks, whereas in America, Australia and Canada they are more commonly called roosters. Males less than a year old are cockerels.[7] Castrated roosters are called capons (surgical and chemical castration are now illegal in some parts of the world). Females over a year old are known as hens and younger females as pullets[8] although...

Roasted Chicken

...ROASTED CHICKEN Having learnt the things I’ve learnt about chickens over the last few years, of course I’m going to suggest that you buy free-range or organic. But if you’re a little tight for cash, the RSPCA Freedom Food chickens are very good and available in all good supermarkets. To prepare your chicken • Take your chicken out of the fridge 30 minutes before it goes into the oven • Preheat your oven to 240°C/475°F/gas 9 • There’s no need to peel the vegetables – just give them a wash and roughly chop them • Break the garlic bulb into cloves, leaving them unpeeled • Pile all the veg and garlic into the middle of a large roasting tray and drizzle with olive oil • Drizzle the chicken with olive oil and season well with salt and pepper, rubbing it all over the bird • Carefully prick the lemon all over, using the tip of a sharp knife (if you have a microwave, you could pop the lemon in these for 40 seconds at this point as this will really bring out the flavour) • Put the lemon inside the chicken’s cavity, with the bunch of herbs To cook your chicken • Place the chicken on top of the vegetables in the roasting tray and put it into the preheated oven • Turn the heat down immediately to 200°C/400°F/gas 6 and cook the chicken for 1 hour and 20 minutes • If you’re doing roast potatoes and veggies, this is the time to crack on with them – get them into the oven for the last 45 minutes of cooking • Baste the chicken halfway through cooking and if the veg look...

Essay On Oil Pollution

...oil exploration tales place. In Nigeria, the problem is more pronounced in the Niger-Delta region. Poultry farming is a very lucrative business in Nigeria where both chickens (layers and broilers) are found particularly in the northern part of the country. The eggshells are usually thrown and allowed to liter the environment. A column study was used to test the ability of the eggshell granules in the removal of crude oil from oil polluted water from as high as 187 ppm to 1.5 ppm. Effects on water flow rate, and bed height were investigated. The result showed that as the bed height increased from 5 cm to 30 cm, the oil removal varies from 88 to 99% and the service time varies from 876 to 3702 s. The effect of flow rate on oil removal showed that the higher the flow rate, the lower the amount of oil removed. The pattern by which oil was removed from polluted water was based on an equation of a polynomial order of 5 degree.Bed depth service time was used to evaluate the values of the sorption capacity of the bed No and the bed depth service constant Ka. The values of No and Ka are 36.88mg/L and 0.000068 L/mg/sec respectively. The critical bed...

Easter Island

...70 subsidiary cones. The most ancient stones are 500,000 year old alkali basalt/hawaiite lava flows constructing the Poike composite volcano at the island's eastern edge. Poike, which was formerly an island that eventually became joined to Terevaka by basalt flows emitted from Terevaka, has been seriously crumbled by the sea on each and every edge. The southwest flank of Rapa Nui was created by the Kao volcano. The Rano Kao lake inside the volcano's crater is one of Easter Island's only three pure chunks of crisp water. The water from the exceedingly submerged crater, which is approximately 3,000 feet in width, is carried to Easter Island's capital, Hanga Roa. The crater is roughly a mile in diameter and features a unique microclimate protected from winds. The lake has an abundance of climbing plants. The interior declivity was the spot of the most recent wild toromoro tree just before the species was felled for cordwood in 1960. The majority of Kao volcano is on the seacoast and has been abraded back to build towering sea escarpments which at one time have begun to cut into the caldera precipice. Kao is halfway between Poike and Terevaka in the level of its sea escarpment and soil growth. The Terevaka volcano dominates almost the entire mainland of Rapa Nui...
