The overall mission of Hills College’s Department of Residence life is supported by Chickering’s 7 Vectors of Development and

Chickerering’s 7 Vectors of Development illustrates how students develop in the college setting and how this development can affect him or her emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually in a college environment. The first 3 vectors are usually covered in the first years of college. Residence Life hopes to help guide students through as many vectors as possible. The Vectors are identified as developmental tasks for student’s to experience in order to become a complete individual. The vectors that Residence Life strives to help students accomplish are: * Vector 1: Developing Competence. Intellectual, Physical, and Interpersonal Competence are the 3 main area. Intellectual Competence could be attained with help from residence life by forming study groups or tutors in the hall. Study areas in residence halls is a definite plus. Students can interact and also help one another on subjects they are knowledgeable in. There are many things a residence life staff can do to help students develop their physical and manual skills. Wellness programs in the hall or holding intramural tournaments between halls could be great for developing Physical Competence. Developing Interpersonal competence is continuously seen in a residence hall. Having an open door policy in residence halls is important. Students should be able to recommend programs and also lead programs for residence halls. For instance, in an all girl’s dorm having “girl’s talk” has been effective for many halls. Allow students to coordinate events to help with leadership skills. Talking with students about keeping the doors open and communicating with other students will help in this particular area. * Vector 2: Managing Emotions: Living with others can cause different emotions from people. For instance, take a student that has no siblings and never has had a roommate. Having to live in a residence hall could be a big change for this student. By having a roommate, this student learns to deal with others and handle emotions differently. There are many situations that may arise between roommates that require each student to learn to handle emotions better. * Vector 3: Moving through Autonomy towards Independence: A key developmental step for students is learning to function with relative self-sufficiency, to take responsibility for pursuing self-chosen goals, and to be less bound by others’ opinions. Movement requires both emotional and instrumental independence, and later recognition and acceptance of interdependence. * Vector 4: Mature Interpersonal Relationships * Vector 5: Establishing Identity * Vector 6: Developing Purpose * Vector 7: Developing Integrity

SAGARINO University of the Immaculate Conception Abstract - Living in a boarding house or dormitory is necessary for students who come from far places. In Davao City, an observable statistics of university students from neighbouring provinces and the city’s outskirts live in these temporary residences. However, reports reveal that these housing facilities, most of the time, fail to consider students’ safety and welfare. This study determined the living conditions of university students in boarding houses and dormitories. This is anchored on the premise that the physical and environmental components of these residential facilities could affect students’ holistic well-being. Data elicited through survey involving five hundred seventy-one (571) respondents and focused group discussion among selected groups of student-boarders/dormers, reveal that a student’s stay in a boarding house and dormitory has significant contributions to his/her personal, social, academic and emotional growth.
