The bare chested, strongly built figure, reminiscent of a Greek demigod, sports a narrow and European appearing nose, and historians generally agree that it does not resemble Chief Oshkosh in life or death. But these historical inaccuracies might be overlooked if the monument had remained a statue. However, in 1926, the City of Oshkosh buried the bones of who they believed to be Chief Oshkosh the Brave at the foot of the monument. This action turned the City Beautiful Movement artwork into a grave site, one that Menominee leaders were none too supportive of. Scott Cross, a historian working with the Oshkosh Public Museum, writes that “A popular movement began in the 1880s to disinter the body of Chief Oshkosh and to move it to the city of Oshkosh”.
