Profile Process Piece: Analyzing the Rhetorical Situation
Week 1 Assignment
Please answer the following questions in complete sentence and paragraph format. Although this is not a formal essay assignment, please note that proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure are required. This week’s lecture and Chapters 2 and 3 in your text will help you work through some of the terms within the rhetorical situation.
Defining Topic, Angle, Purpose 1. What is your chosen topic? (For example: a profile of Barb Collins, a volunteer at the local homeless shelter; a profile of “Shipwreck Days,” a citywide flea market and festival; or a profile of Burdick’s Grocery, the oldest family-owned business in town.)
I am doing a profile on Dale Chihuly, An American glass blower and artist. 2. What unique angle can you present on this topic? (Consider what is new about the topic or what unique perspective can be shared about this topic.)
Chihuly’s works are considered unique to the field of blown glass, "moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture," (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). 3. What is your purpose for writing? (What do you hope to accomplish? Why are you writing?)
My purpose for writing about Chihuly is to give everyone a chance to see what kind of amazing and beautiful art that can be done by someone who is blind in one eye.
Analyzing your Readers
You will be writing your Profile essay to your local community. Imagine you might submit the Profile to your local newspaper or have it shared in a community newsletter; the readers of those publications make up your target audience. In two to three paragraphs, define your local community and describe what makes it unique. What are the needs, expectations, motivations, backgrounds, demographics, and experiences of community members? How will those influences impact your word choice, level of formality, and

Chihuly Art Museum

...Extra Credit Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum I visited the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum located on the grounds of the Seattle Center on July 31, 2012. Having always been an admirer of Chihuly’s work, my anticipation to visit the museum set the bar high as for what I expected to see; and I was not disappointed. The museum was divided into three main sections, the Exhibition Hall, the Glass House and a Garden. It is in the Exhibition Hall where the greatest variety of work is displayed. The Exhibition Hall is divided into eight galleries and three drawing wall. Each shows the different approaches Chihuly used to express his approach to glass art. The first room you enter is the Glass Forest. It is a installation which was originally done in 1971. These are large stalks of glass that are charged with neon. Of all the sections in the museum I liked this least. The colors were less vibrant and had a feel of South Beach hotel neon, almost pink flamingo like. However the display showed a point in the artist’s evolutionary process. The next main section was the Northwest Room. It is here we start to see the forms and shapes that we are familiar with. The colors of these pieces are very subdued, having northwest earth tones. It is the shapes of the pieces that are intriguing. 1 Northwest Room The next area is the Sealife Room. The glass takes the shapes and colors of the ocean. The artist takes you to the sea with his interpretation of starfish, rays, urchins...

A Critical Analysis of the Life and Works of Fused Glass Artists Toots Zynsky and Klaus Moje

...I shall introduce the origins of fused glass art, detailing where and when Toots Zynsky and Klaus Moje appear in relation to the movement. I shall also introduce their contemporaries and discover how the artists have influenced (and been influenced by) their peers. Towards the end of the dissertation I intend to see what the future holds for the artists, their work and the artistic movement as a whole. My conclusions shall be based on what I have learned from this dissertation and how the artists have affected me on my journey. Fused Glass Origins There is some debate as to the true origins of fused glass art. According to the ancient-Roman historian Pliny in his book Historia Naturalis the process was invented accidentally around 5000 BC by Phoenician (Syrian) sailors: Once a ship belonging to some traders in natural soda put in here and... scattered along the shore to prepare a meal. Since, however, no stones suitable for supporting their cauldrons were forthcoming, they rested them on lumps of soda from their cargo. When these became heated and were completely mingled with the sand on the beach a strange translucent liquid flowed forth in the streams; and this, it is said, was the origin of glass. However, my belief is that although this a trustworthy recorded source, it was plainly an accident and not a contrived attempt to make art. With this in mind I would suggest that the true origins of producing glass as an art form began not with the Syrians but with the Egyptians...

MCMANUS The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company op yo The Master said, Govern the people by regulations, keep order among them by chastisements, and they will flee from you, and lose all self-respect. In the place where you didn’t think that it had a chance, he made it the best hotel. That’s his talent. That’s what he can do really well. It’s for the entrepreneurial person who wants to get involved and who thinks they can make a difference.” Do No But this was a new situation, even for McBride. For the first time,...
