...different conflicts and rise and fall action. II. Endearing friendship is the primary and explicit theme of Bridge to Terabithia. III. Paterson’s writing style genuinely enhances the story as she makes use of a third-person limited point of view, figurative language, a colloquial and understated tone and an Appalachian dialect for a realistic effect. Katherine Paterson’s, 1977 award winning novel, Bridge to Terabithia, is a deeply moving, imagination-sparking tale. This young adult fiction novel takes place in a magical kingdom that was created out of the minds of the two unforgettable child protagonists, Jess and Leslie. Through Paterson’s use of literary elements such as: plot, theme, and style, the reader comes to understand and marvel at the benevolence and devotion of youthful friendship, and the power and magic of the imagination. Bridge to Terabithia is a commendable, heartwarming, eloquently written book that well deserves the designation of “one of the most timeless and classical books ever written.” Paterson’s plot is a progressive sequence of events, mixed with several different conflicts and rise and fall action. Bridge to Terabithia’s plot begins its rise with a person vs. society conflict as Jess and Leslie quickly become best friends while trying to deal with a world that oftentimes does not understand them. Shortly after, the person vs. man is encountered as Jess and Leslie's friendship is strengthened by their encounters with a schoolyard bully...

...Friendship Friendships are the gift to the man kind. The relations which we get in this world are blood related. But the only relationship which does not related to blood is friendship. Friendship has many forms and shapes. It is like water. If we pour the water into a jug it takes the shape of jug. if you pour the same water into a bowl it takes the shape of bowl. Same way friendships will take a different shapes and sizes according to our heart. Friendship gives pleasure to human beings. Where there is friendship then there will not be any sorrow. When you see a child laughing you will forget your sorrows for a second, same way when you are with a friend you forget your sorrows. Friendship, like the immortality of the soul, is too good to be believed. The lover, beholding his maiden, half knows that she is not verily that which he worships; and in the golden hour of friendship, we are surprised with shades of suspicion and unbelief. We doubt that we bestow on our hero the virtues in which he shines, and afterwards worship the form to which we have ascribed this divine inhabitation. In strictness, the soul does not respect men as it respects itself. In strict science all persons underlie the same condition of an infinite remoteness. Shall we fear to cool our love by mining for the metaphysical foundation of this Elysian temple? Shall I not be as real as the things I see? If I am, I shall not fear to know them for what they are. Their essence is not less beautiful than their...

...Friendship holds distinct significances and values to different people and cannot always be effortlessly expressed. A subject which had not seen much recognition prior to the 1970’s was how friendship is perceived by children. This essay is to provide the likenesses and differences between two studies which investigated this subject. The first study which will be discussed was accomplished by Brian Bigelow and John La Gaipa in which they used the content analysis approach. The second study to be considered was completed by William Corsaro in which the ethnographic method was used. The research by Bigelow and La Gaipa was similar to that of Corsaro’s as not much research had been done prior to their investigations within the study of friendship in children. However these investigations differentiated in the method of how data was obtained and portrayed. In 1975 Bigelow and La Gaipa requested 480 children, with an equal range of girls and boys, aged between six and fourteen years to write essays on friendship. They requested 60 students each from eight difference schools, 30 boys and 30 girls, from eight different areas in America. The specific information targeted was what they sought in a best friend and how this differed to other relationships they had. (Brownlow, 2012, p.242). The approach they took to their findings was content analysis, they had exchanged the qualitative data they held into quantitative data. Bigelow and La Gaipa collated the data from these essays and converted...

...The truth about male friendship ‘’For men to really become friends there has to be an element of adventure.’’ Michael Chabon says this in his Pulitzer prize-winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, and it is the basic line in male friendship. The thing that happens with men when they are in each other’s company is the very idea of adventure. It doesn’t have to a big adventure, as long as the two of you makes it big. Safraz Manzoor has taken it upon his shoulders, to describe this phenomenon in the text, ‘‘The truth about male friendship’’. In the text we are introduced to the man Safraz Manzoor, the writer of the text, and his all-time best friend Amolak, who is a banker. He tells us about how he and Amolak shares different passions, among them music, which is known as a great way to bond, not just with your friends, but with anybody. Safraz and Amolak have been friends since they were 16, so 25 years of friendship by the time that Safraz wrote the text. This doesn’t mean 25 years of a happy friendship with cake and flowers, which isn’t the case in many long-running male friendships. My father has this friend called Søren. They shared the most of their teenage years with each other, and were inseparable until the age of 23. What happened here was Søren’s girlfriend, drunk as she was, asking my father for a kiss, and, drunk as he was, he said yes. Søren quickly knocked out my father, still has a scar under his beard, and they didn’t talk to each other for...

...It’s safe to say everyone wants a life similar to the ones of the characters on the popular television series Friends – close friends living together in the big city, enjoying life and experiencing the many new stages that come along with it. While a lifestyle similar to that is probable in our daily lives, one must realize the crucial effect childhood friendships have on their adult life and to their mind’s social and emotional development. In layman’s terms, without close friendships growing up, it is nearly impossible for an adult to obtain and flourish intimate friendships similar to those found on Friends. It is important for children to have interpersonal relationships with their peers so that they can develop emotional compatibility, volunteer intimacy with another person, and discover the significance of empathy and sympathy. The first reason friendships are crucial among children is because it allows them to develop and share emotional compatibility. It is difficult for a teenager to identify with a young child in the same way that it is difficult for an adult to relate with a teenager; differences in knowledge, maturity, and life experience create a hindrance, a hypothetical brick wall, between the two people that leads to a lack of emotional compatibility. However, when children of the same age interact with one another, they have mutual feelings, which allow them to effortlessly understand one another’s reality. While they might not sit around and have in-depth discussions...

...I am a Hindu who always wanted to trade in her religion during one month of the year: December. I could never resist my adoration of Christmas. As a child, I thought it was unfair that I could not have a Christmas just because of my primary religious beliefs. Though my family never celebrated the holiday, I secretly honored the season in my heart; loving the music, the trees and the glowing lights I saw throughout the city. But I was never able to outwardly celebrate the holiday until I acquired my second family in my junior year of high school. Members of my second family are Jewish and Atheist. In fact, none of us are actually Christian. We all love the trappings of Christmas and decided nothing could stop us from celebrating the holiday. On Christmas Eve last year, we met at my friend's apartment on the Upper West Side. We dressed in our finest and set the table with fancy plates, beautiful silverware, and the embroidered napkins. We spread Chinese take-out on the plates and ate fortune cookies for dessert. In a sense, we were celebrating our friendships and diversity more than the holiday itself. For me, the Chinese-Jewish-Christmas was an affirmation of a newfound independence that inadvertently came into my life with my second family. Before then, I had grown socially dependent on my six-pack.I became friends with six girls from Southeast Asia, other "Brownies." We were inseparable in my freshman year. I always dreamed of attending Stuyvesant High School but it seemed...

...Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between two or more people. Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. Friendship has been studied in academic fields such as sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and philosophy. Various academic theories of friendship have been proposed, including social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics, and attachment styles. A World Happiness Database study found that people with close friendships are happier. Although there are many forms of friendship, some of which may vary from place to place, certain characteristics are present in many types of friendship. Such characteristics include affection, sympathy, empathy, honesty, altruism, mutual understanding and compassion, enjoyment of each other's company, trust, and the ability to be oneself, express one's feelings, and make mistakes without fear of judgment from the friend. While there is no practical limit on what types of people can form a friendship, friends tend to share common backgrounds, occupations, or interests, and have similar demographics. THE DEVELOPMENT STAGES OF FRIENDSHIP Developmental Psychology In the typical sequence of an individual's emotional development, friendships come after parental bonding and before pair bonding. In the intervening period between the end of early childhood and the onset of full adulthood, friendships are often the most important relationships in the emotional life of the adolescent, and...

..."The greatest healing therapy is friendship and love" (Hubert H. Humphrey). There is much evidence of this idea that love can make any situation better in The Book Thief. Written by Markus Zusak, The Book Thief is a fictional novel narrated by death that follows the intriguing, yet somber life of a young girl named Liesel Meminger, who lives in Nazi Germany. There are many types of love, the love shared between parent and child, the love shared between friends, and the love felt for a significant other. A major theme throughout the novel is love, including familial, friendship, and romantic love which all contribute to the 'therapy' the characters, especially Liesel, need to heal from past life experiences. Familial love played a huge...

...was only six years old. At that time my dad used to be the coach of a handball team for kids between the ages of five and seven. Initially I was not interested in practicing it at all but he took me to a game once and I suddenly became quite excited. Maybe it was because I have seen all those kids running around chasing a ball… However, I’d like to bring you a bit closer to the sport of handball and hope to encourage you in taking up this activity. I believe handball is an excellent sport for children. Practice with small children usually starts with general motor exercises. They jump, jump on one foot, run, try to catch and throw a ball while running, do balance exercises, and the list just goes on. It’s a great sport to get your child moving, stay active and get into the habit of weekly exercises. Additionally, it keeps them away from playing with electronic gadgets day in and day out. Besides, handball is a team sport. An individual alone cannot have any success in this activity. The younger you are to start it the better and the more intense your team spirit is being developed. It also encourages a great sense of fairness, competition, as well as assertiveness. However, handball is not only for children. Even as an adult it’s never too late to start. I had a lot of friends who joined the team when they were 20 or even 30 years old. It’s a great work-life balance. You have your weekly schedule and know...

...The Three Types of Friendship If there is one thing that can be used to describe human beings aside from intelligence and the power of destruction it would be that we are entirely social beings. No person is to live a life without being social. It merely would be impossible and for those who do find themselves in the state of rejecting society and a social lifestyle, it would be those who have psychological disorders. With us being social it leads to the search of companionship. The reality is that we all want friendships. According to the great Greek philosopher Aristotle, we are complete social beings and seek friendship. Aristotle argues that there are three main kinds of friendship. The first kind of friendship is that one based on Utility. What is a friendship based on usefulness? I would describe a friendship based on utility as being for one that gets something in return for another’s actions. For example, if there is someone at school that always gets great grades on exams and for that reason I befriend that person in return to get help on my exams and the other person accepts if I drive them home from school, it builds as a friendship based on convenience. This friendship only exists because the individuals involved have a reason to do something for each other. Aristotle believes this friendship doesn't work and won't last. I highly agree for the reason that once the favors and usefulness of the other person fails to comply the friendship will eventually dissolve...

...How can the poems in the ‘Moon on the Tides’ anthology be seen to provide a meaningful insight into George and Lennie’s relationship? During the Great Depression of the 1930s when America was plunged into financial crisis, following the Wall Street Crash of October 1929, levels of unemployment and poverty were at a record high. Through this period, life was a struggle and the mentality of society became survival of the fittest, every man for himself. Migrant workers toured the country in search of labour to provide money for food. These men led lonely and emotionless lives, which are reflected through Steinbeck’s portrayal of his characters in his famous, yet bleak, 1930s parable ‘Of Mice and Men.’ In the novel, George and Lennie’s relationship diversifies them from the other ranch workers for the reason that they rely on each other for support and companionship ‘I got you and you got me.’ In particular, the dream they share of owning their own land, reflects the American Dream of being the ringleader of your own life with a level of self- sufficiency. The dream is a significant aspect in their relationship and is portrayed in the poem ‘The Moment’. Apart from each other, the only other thing that George and Lennie have to keep them motivated is the dream. The poem opens with the line “The moment when, after many years of hard work and a long voyage”. This is a metaphor for the life that George and Lennie live as itinerant workers and how they move from ranch to ranch together...

...of one’s life are greatly influential to the overall individuality of a person especially when he has grown up. In the words of Sigmund Freud, “the child is father to the son” – childhood essentially shapes the person’s behavior or character in life. All the systems, feelings, insights and qualities he acquires from childhood is brought by him in one way or another until he grows up into an adult. It is, therefore, vital that a child must be nurtured with sufficient love and care. He must be guided and be exposed to situations which mold him into a better person. As much as possible, he must experience lesser negative, depressing, agitating or even saddening situations for it affects the way he sees things in life as well as his behavior towards certain these kinds of circumstances as he grows up in life no matter how trivial or complicated these may be. According to John Locke, the child’s mind is likened to a tabula rasa or a blank slate. When a child is born, his mind has nothing stored in it. He just knows the basic feelings of pain and comfort. Like a blank sheet of coupon bond, there is nothing written yet so whatever the parents or guardians who rear the child teaches him will be marked in his mind and eventually become part of his knowledge or mindset. Hence, it is but rational to consider that in order to raise a child and mold him into a fine individual as he grows old, it is important to feed his mind with things which are essential to strengthen...

They should have love and understanding, trust and respect for each other. Thus, before getting married one should give importance to the degree of friendship a couple holds. As said by Nicolas Sparks in the novel “The Notebook”- “You are my best friend as well as my lover, and I do not know which side of you I enjoy the most. I treasure each side, just as I have treasured our life together.” Many songs and stories have been written on the importance of friendship. It breaks the ice between two unknown people, if the other person is friendlier then a person feels more comfortable and easily opens up. Even a small drop of friendship can do wonders in any such relationship as the relationship of a couple, parents and their child, boss and employee, members of an organization etc. Heaven will fall on earth if we can remove personality, selfishness and hate and grow love and friendship for each other in the hearts of people.
