Scope and Purpose: Childhood obesity is a very serious health issue for today’s growing society. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 42 million children under the age of five that are dealing with obesity (WHO, 2015). Childhood obesity has a huge effect on these children as they grow into adulthood. Many of these children end up with health problems such as diabetes, heart problems, and mental health issues. Most of these diseases and issues are very much preventable and should be looked into more depth. Children with such issues have a harder time making friends and finding confidence and lack in areas such as school because of their obesity. Ten out of twelve months in a year, children spend at school. Furthermore, some children even spend more time at day care facilities throughout the year. Other than the water fountains in school and daycares, they also include having many different vending machines. Vending machines that hold from juices and pop to candy and chips. These beverages and foods both have very high levels of sugar and salt. Many of the children that attend school and daycare facilities are intrigued by these machines from a young age and use them very frequently. According to Health Alberta’s website, 26 percent of children in Canada are obese or overweight. Adolescents make approximately 78 percent of their vending machine purchase. Of those purchases 64 percent include beverages, 32 percent include candy or gum, 26 percent include salty foods. Also, British Columbia and Nova Scotia have regulations that only healthy food choices are made. Many other provinces and territories have regulations that keep healthy foods in schools and vending machines.

Having society help with such issues should be an important concern for communities. All schools should encourage each other to implement policies that promote healthy foods in vending machines that are of appropriate sizes. As children are in elementary school’s teachers and staff should she stop giving unhealthy foods as rewards and bring healthier alternatives.
