1. Give an account of childraising principles in the three texts.
Our childraising has a very important value of who we are or will be. It makes us who we are and has a great influence on our way of living. Parents today try to raise their children as perfect as they can be. There are many ways of childraising. A lot of different ways also. But there is not a single answer, for the normal or perfect childraising. Parents raise their child or child’s different. The different methods of childraising has cost many debates. In the first text, Sophia Chuba-Rubenfield tells about how it was to be raised by her mother Amy Chau. The text is named: “why I love my strict Chinese mom”. Amy Chau has got a lot of critic because of her book: “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” which is described as “how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids” (p. 2, l. 4). Because of the critic to the mom, he daughter has written her side of the story to the post. In the letter, she wrote, she thanks her mother for pushing her to the limit. She says her mother’s “tough love” has raise her to be an independent thinker who has lived her whole live at 110 percent. The “tough love” is visible in some of the rules there was in the raising. Amy Chua has used strict parenting, not letting her kids attend to a sleepover or even having a playdate, making her playing violin and piano in her sparetime. According to Sophia, she is thankful of the way her mom has raised her.
In the second text: “Let them eat pizza: Parenting guru’s recipe for bringing up children.” Do we hear about parenting guru Dr. Bryan Caplan claims that children should be allowed to eat pizza and watch more television. He thinks that parents try to hard when bringing up their children, instead they should stop trying to control them, stop making them do a million activities and just accept that their children’s lives are shaped by their genes and their own choices. He argues that parents should take a backseat role called “serenity parenting” which is the exact opposite of “tiger mom parenting”.
In the last statement, “Summerhill – a radical approach to child rearing”, written by A.S. Neill whom is the founder of the Summerhill School, do we hear about the school’s general policy. A.S. Neill thinks just like Dr. Bryan Caplan that parents are squeezing their children to reach something they maybe are not able to reach. Something A.S. Neill also point out is the children’s creative talents. Because of the parent’s suppression, A.S. Neill thinks that some children will completely lose their creativity, which they maybe would be better at than their proficiency in a subject. A.S. Neill therefore states clearly that Summerhill school is a place where the children achieve all the freedom they need also from the teachers.

2. How does A.S. Neill engage the reader in text 3? Give examples from the text.
A.S Neill engages the reader with his own experiences as a founder of the Summerhill School. A.S. Neill makes the topic personal at the start, involving his own personal opinion on learning: “I am not decrying learning. But learning should come after play” (p. 7, l. 1). Using pathos by involving himself emotionally makes it easier for the reader to identify with him. In addition, he has a superior ethos when he tells about experiences he have gotten during his position as a founder of a school: “I have seen a girl weep nightly over her geometry. Her mother wanted her to go to university, but the girl’s whole soul was artistic” (p. 7, l. 11). A.S Neill also uses logos when asking what the world would have lost if the famous ballet dancer, Nijinsky, had really to pass those exams to get into the State Ballet. He puts a perspective for the “forcing children into education” by asking this question, it makes the reader imagine what talents we have lost because of this.
3. taking your starting point in one of the three texts, discuss how children should be raised.
I am sure that Sophia Chua thinks she has lived her life 110 percent, but I also think that most people would say that in the age of 18, everyone has their own opinion on living life the best as possible. Mother Amy Chua definitely has something to be proud of, her daughter is successfully becoming an adult and most of the credit goes to herself as a parent. Personally, I think that it is the parent’s responsibility to show their children what opportunities life can offer. At some point I do think Amy Chua’s way to raise children is a god way. Reverse I do also see a god way at some of A.S. Neill’s points. I do not agree in every single point from Amy, but not either at A.S. Neill’s points. I think a way cross between those would be interesting.
