Should kids be allowed to bring Cell Phones to School?
May 13, 2008 — gatorball
By Paul Silli
It’s a real debate among students, teachers, administrators, and many parents… Some say YES!
What if there’s an emergency? A child could easily use one of the office phones, but still! What if the student forgot that he/she had an after-school program to attend, and the offices were closed or the phone was occupied? Most students have trouble contacting their parent(s). Parents often get worried, and the school phone maybe unavailable. Then what do ya do? Some say NO!
If a child has a cell phone they should be allowed to take it to school but then when they get there it could be collected, and when they leave it would be returned to them. Many teachers and faculty don’t agree with this system. It could cause a big mess… For example, what if the phone gets damaged, lost or stolen? Would the school district have to pay for the phone? Ouch! That could get costly! School Offices can be contacted if you need to get hold of your child urgently, or if your child needs to contact you. Unfortunately, you only have to look at websites like You-Tube.com to see what kids are actually doing with their mobile phones while at school (and they ain’t calling their parents). Students use their cell phones to play games, listen to MP3 music, text message each other (a big one), and even access the Internet, among other things. Keep in mind that our kids are supposed to be learning at school. Right? Can cell phones somehow be used as a learning-tool for teachers? Hm… Also, sadly there is a new source of bullying, in that if a student does not have the “popular type” of cell phone or one of the fancy features, he or she can can often be looked down on by their peers. Mobile phones have definitely become a status symbol for young people.

Obesity In Children

...Advertising has been a large asset for the American economy over the years. While it has been a great tool, it should be limited to the adult population of viewers only, and not directed towards childen. There have been sereval studies done recently, that have proven the negative affects of advertising on young children. These include bad eating habits, self esteem issues, poor dicision making, and an unrealistic idea of what's important in life. Experts have seen that advertising featuring fast food chains, and sugary or unhealthy snacks, will entice children to make poor dicisions about what to eat, and also cause over eating. Advertising and Children

...Advertising and Children Throughout the United States and the worldwide, companies are continuing to direct advertisements of their goods and services at children and teenagers at an alarming rate. The advertising aimed at the children and teens is arguably reaping a financial windfall for the corporations so engaged in this advertising while the downside for children are problems such as obesity, isolation and greed. If corporations continue to target these young individuals to purchase their goods and services, then they should shoulder some responsibility in the treatment of the resulting problems that arise. Probably ever since there were stores selling goods to the public, advertising towards children has been taken place. I reminisce about watching the old television show, Little House of the Prairie, seeing little Half Pint walk into Olsen’s General Store and seeing the penny candy in the barrels right near the front counter, easily accessible by her or any child that should enter the store. This was advertising towards children in one of its earliest forms. The placing of a product a child would desire right at the child’s eye level was indeed strategic back then and continues to be a key point of purchase or POP as it’s called, advertising strategy today. Walk into any convenience store and surely you will find candy, gum and other toys and trinkets that children would impulsively want. . . placed conspicuously near the front counter and of course, within reach...

Feral Children

...Feral children are individuals who have grown up with little to no human contact. Most do not have an ability to interact with humans. When they are discovered, they are unable to react to contact. They live without human care, social contact, love, and human language. They are isolated from the human world - often as an effect of neglect, or from growing up alongside wild animals. One would believe that all humans, no matter what age, have the ability to conform to a society regardless of their past circumstances. Feral children, on the other hand, are nearly, if not completely incapable of conforming to a society due to the fact that they have transformed into beings that are, for the most part, incapable of interacting with others in a ‘normal’ society. The majority of these children will never have the ability to learn the human language. Ivan Mishukov is a citizen in Russia who was raised by dogs only from ages four to six. In another case, Natasha Mikhailova grew up with the animals in her house. She was treated like one of the many dogs and cats that her family cared for in their small home in Chita, Siberia. A very recent case takes place in Florida where Dani Lierow was rescued and now lives with her adoptive parents in Fort Myers Beach. Science suggests that each of these wild children will forever be unable to speak a human language. Treatment is available to them, but there is only so much that can be done. In 1996, four-year-old Ivan Mishukov left his home in...

Wise Children

...How does Carters presentation of acting and performance affect your interpretation of the novel? Angela Carter presents acting and performance in Wise Children in a very theatrical, carnivalesque way. The carnivalesque, in terms of the novel and performance, is shown partly through the several links to Shakespeare’s plays and through the main motto of the novel ‘what a joy it is to dance and sing’. The novel is structured in five parts, with a first person retrospective narrative, in the same way a Shakespeare play is structured into five acts. The Hazard and Chance families in the novel, including Dora and Nora’s ‘legitimate’ and ‘famous Shakespearian actor of a father,’ Melchior, are all performers. The appearance of twins is a particular link to Shakespeare where this is a common element. This also links to the twins in the Shakespeare play ‘twelfth night’ where Viola dresses as her bother Sebastian producing confusion and comedy for the viewer. This display of deception links to when Dora asks Nora for Nora’s boyfriend for the night and they pretend to be each other and deceive him into thinking he is with Nora. Indeed, deception is a common theme throughout performance: Melchior deceives nearly everyone into thinking that he’s a nice man who’s ‘Our greatest living Shakespearian’ when really, underneath the performance he puts on, he’s really the ‘Prince of players’ and doesn’t really care about his own daughters, only that he’s centre stage. . Dora’s narration makes constant...

Juvenile Offenders: Children Worth Giving a Second Chance

...Juvenile Offenders: Children Worth Giving a Second Chance Sarah Kee COM/156 June 13, 2012 “Young people are not only disproportionately the perpetrators of crime; they are also disproportionately the victims of crime”—Kelly Richards. When I think about the severity of crime, my last thought is that a child would commit such thing. When that does happen, it comes as a shock to me. Although I do agree that a juvenile should be punished for their wrong doings, I don’t agree with that way the law handles things. Juvenile offenders charged as adults are being robbed of their lives and deserve to get a second chance to make better decisions. My Take on How the Law Handles Juveniles Offenders From a personal standpoint, I can’t help but disagree with how the law sometimes takes its course. In this case, my matter of contention is juveniles being charged as adults for severe crimes. That’s not the only problem, not only are they being charged as adults, but also they are being sent to these adult prisons to serve time. I don’t want to give off the wrong impression that I feel it’s alright for children to commit such severe crimes and not have some source of consequence. The controversy here is to look at the big picture and consider another alternative for the problem. I’m aware of the severity of one committing a homicide or even a sexual assault, especially for it to be a child. That intuition comes from somewhere though. Causes of Juvenile Abomination There are a few...

The purpose is to build a society that does not have prison systems expanding. This is only possible when the child is given the attention the child needs in the formative years, from birth till the age of 18. The Waldorf style of preschool education is appropriate in these modern times but with the discipline of the traditional preschool style. I have been educated in the traditional preschool system and did not come out any worse for it. The case study that I would select is Lisa getting frustrated while trying to play with other children and even hitting out at them with toys. This is a more serious behavior pattern than Shaun clinging to his mother. Most children at that age cling to their parent but outgrow it over a period of time. Children must be left by parents at the main gate of the school and the children must be encouraged to walk the rest on their own and line up outside the school premise or in an assembly hall for morning prayers and a song perhaps before starting the day in preschool. The children must walk in silence to their class rooms and sit where they are allotted. The seat should be a regular seat for them every day. There should be a...

The realities of these young children soldiers are real and many of these young lives are lost. These young children are recruited in a number of ways, the immense aftermath is undeniable, and the factors, such as environmental, physical, and economic, that encircle their basic need to survive. Children are not born to kill, they are taught. The judicial system and the controversies surrounding the prosecution of child soldiers are ongoing. Although there are several organizations, foundations, and associations that are combating these occurrences, the fact of the matter is, until awareness is increased and the truth is put out there, struggles to defend the human rights and social justice are going to be continuing. Children on the battlefield have been found throughout history. From the biblical times to World War II, children have been used to fight because of their vulnerability, small size, and their need for survival. These children are exploited from regions in Africa, Iran, Cambodia, Australia, Afghanistan, Canada, and even in the United States. A child under the age of 18 would be considered a child. In the US, a 17 year old child could become a soldier with their parent’s approval. Wouldn’t that be considered a child soldier, even if they were not allowed...

Midnight's Children Summary Analysis

...“Midnight’s Children” by Salman Rushdie Summary Analysis Shanell Smith Cappa Barry University “Midnight’s Children” by Salman Rushdie In the beginning of “Midnight’s Children”, within the chapter referred to as “The Perforated Sheet”, Salman Rushdie explains the importance of the time and date of his birth, which coincided with the “precise moment of India’s arrival at independence” (Salman Rushdie 2006) on August 15, 1947. Salman goes on to claim that his birth was the fate of the country, signifying his urgeobligation to tell his stories before his death, which he believes is soon. In the first paragraph, Salman Rushdie starts off with stating “once upon a time”, (Salman Rushdie 2006) which is generally a fairytale line. This seems to imply that Salman is delusional, or takes a telepathic entity where he is able to speak to the other “Midnight’s Children” in order to create a story for himself. Salman believes that he and the other “Midnight Children” are the fate of the country, and that their history is directly impacted by the country, as well as the country’s history being directly impacted by them. Salman uses a wide array of rhetorical devices throughout the first few pages of “Midnight’s Children” such as metaphor, analogy, and imagery. Salman uses “Midnight’s Children”, the title of the novel, as a metaphor. He is saying that the children that were born at the time of India’s independence, are in fact claimed by midnight and the country. Another example...

Advertising Towards Children Should Be Banned

...Markel Stavro Seema Kurup English 101 W01 October 8, 2014 Advertising towards children should be banned A child has a vulnerable mind. He is attempting to understand how the world works, and constantly absorbing all kinds of impressions by scanning the environment he lives in. Television advertisements are very stimulating to adults, let alone to a child that lacks the knowledge of knowing whether an advertisement message is good or bad for his wellbeing. I believe that there should be a restriction on television advertisements aimed at children because they have immature minds and are easily influenced. Nowadays, children spend most of their time in front of TV screens and as a consequence, allowing TV to manipulate their minds to a great extent. It alters their way of thinking. Children’s mind is not mature enough to differentiate what is right and wrong. For that reason, they majorly rely on the feedback they receive from their parents and school. They are told in school or by their parents that something is not good for their health or dangerous but on TV there are advertisements going on that say those acts or things are completely fine and they should be followed. Eventually, kids will develop a bad mindset of how happiness is achieved. They will grow up with the delusion that they will get fulfillment from objects, however, the reality is that materialistic products will only briefly satisfy them. This leads...
