...U.S Economy vs China The United States has had the world’s largest economy for about 140 years, and it roughly accounts for 22% of global GDP. However in recent times, China has overtaken the United States to become the world’s largest economy, according to figures from the international Monetary Fund. The simple logic is that as prices aren’t the same in each country, the IMF measures both GDP in market exchange terms, and in terms of purchasing power. In fact we already know that a typical person in china earns a lot less than the typical person in the US according to Business Insider. However, some analysts such as Bloomberg reports are quick to point out that according to the main benchmark, the US is still number one. China’s economy may now be the largest in the world but it is far from the richest. GDP per head is still less than a quarter of US levels according the Financial Times. According to the International Monetary Fund, China’s purchasing power GDP hit $17.6 trillion last year versus $17.4 trillion in the US. According to CEBR, China’s gross domestic product will grow to $33,513 billion in 2028, up from $8,939 billion in 2013. The simple logic is that prices aren't the same in each country: A shirt will cost you less in Shanghai than in San Francisco, so it's not entirely reasonable to compare countries without taking this into account. The Economist’s calculations assumed that China’s real GDP will grow at 7.75% a year with 4% inflation vs. 2.5% and 1% in...

...of gazing habits and biases with respect to different facial features. AbstractCan we tell which part of our face a person is gazing at when they are gazing at us? The experiment in question gives us an idea to where and why we think a person is looking at that location. There were 27 students split into pairs. Within the pair there was an experimenter and a participant. The experimenter would look at different parts of the participant's face and ask the participant to tell them where they were looking at. Our results showed us that the participants were most accurate at recognising when the eyes, hair, right and left ears were being looked at with correct responses ranging between 46.3%-51.85%. And least accurate when the nose, mouth and chin were being looked at with correct responses ranging between 22.59%-25.19%. Percentage incorrect responses was highest for eyes at 30.1%. The eyes, hair and ears were the easiest to be recognised because those features are the furthest away from other facial parts. The eyes have the highest incorrect response percentage because most people assume it is their eyes people are looking at during social interaction so if the participant was unsure where the experimenter was looking at, the guess would have likely been the eyes. IntroductionNon-verbal communication between humans was first scientifically investigated in 1872 where Charles Darwin wrote “The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals”. Since then many scientists have investigated...

...Jonathan Perez Chinese Literature December 8, 2010 The Plum in the Golden Vase On a cold winter day, P’an Chin-lien anxiously awaits for her brother-in-law, Wu Song, inside the hanging blind at the door. As Wu Song nears the home, Chin-lien becomes aware that her wretched, dwarf husband could never be related to such an astounding and highly esteemed man. He was everything opposite of the dwarf. She entices him to drink warm wine and to sit himself by the fire. Chin-lien did not seem like she wanted to conceal her true intentions towards Wu Song and continued her seduction. The Plum in the Golden Vase (Chin P’ing Mei) accurately portrays a shift in the role of women in traditional Chinese fiction. Traditionally, women in Chinese culture were mere daughters, sisters, wives, mothers, mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. They were expected to serve their fathers during their childhood and serve their husbands in their married life. Through the depiction of P’an Chin-lien and other characters from The Plum in the Golden Vase, the author (The Scoffing Scholar of Lanling) addresses the changes of gender roles. The Scoffing Scholar illustrates how women used seduction to emerge as individuals with decision-making abilities, manipulating behaviors, and sexual prowess. From his youth, Wu Song became an expert with the spear and quarterstaff and therefore feared nothing. It was of no surprise that while traveling though Ching-yang Ridge he kills the tiger with his bare...

...May 12th, 2013 GEOPOLITICS OF SOUTH AND CENTRAL ASIA Borders in South and Central Asia INTRODUCTION While some seem to care above all about the economic growth of several booming economies (or as they are often called “emerging markets”, such as China, Russia or India), it is legitimate for others to worry more about the borders of some states in the very same region. A border is the very line separating two political or geographical areas, more commonly called countries. Whereas in some parts of the world, the borders between two countries are not even a marked and are seen as simple trade corridors, the issue is raised in a totally different way when it comes to both South and Central Asia. The question of borders presents a major problem for several countries, especially given all it symbolizes: the stability of a state and its legal territory, a politically controlled and delimited zone and a corridor between two nations. Were it after the end of the British Empire or that of the Soviet era, the borders keep being a matter of dispute and the cause of severe contentiousness in South and Central Asia nowadays. Drug trafficking and the circulation of energy are not the only problems. The border disputes mostly jeopardize the transnational security and the ethnical conflicts at stake. A territorial dispute is a disagreement over the possession or control of land between two or more states, or over the possession and control of land by a new state that is...

...Many people have been doing chin implants for the past few years and the numbers has increase considerably for a better self image, self esteem, and because there is a small risk rate on that operation. I do accept that having a surgery on your chin, because a malformation or an accident it could be of a great relief. Living your entire life with a malformation on your face, could be really painful for many people. Having an accident where the result is a deformation on your face could be even more painful, since a sudden change to our appearance could be as shocking and traumatizing as for a person that loses his or her ability to walk. Speaking for myself I'm grateful that I did not have any malformation on my face and body, cannot speak for those who do have these problems, although it wasn't their choice. The chin implant surgery could really be a great salvation for these people, but there are those that take advantage of these surgical advances for their own cosmetic vanity. According to the article publish by Diane Mapes “surgical procedures that enhance and define the chin line, increased 71 Percent between 2010 and 2011, outdoing breast augmentation, liposuction and even Botox” I find these numbers ridiculous, people believe that having a bigger chin means being better at what you do professionally for living. The media shows bosses with bigger chin, and the people image that actor as for how bosses should look like, therefore the chin plants surgery has gone up at...

...Jogging forward in China The only problems in the quarter for Nike were Western Europe and Greater China. Weakness in Europe is expected due to the economic situation in that region. China, however, is a concern for Nike. Inventories in China have increased and the company was forced to discount its products. Nike expects sales in China to be down in the next quarter. The good thing about Nike is that it's quick to make adjustments in the marketplace. The company has been working to reduce its inventory in China and reworking its product line to meet the tastes of the Chinese consumer. In May, the company replaced its executive in charge of Greater China. Nike realizes changes need to be made to succeed in China and the company is doing so. CEO Mark Parker said: The race in China is a marathon. It's not a sprint, and we're set for the long-run. China is where the next phase of growth is for Nike. Consider that Nike just opened its first running store and basketball store last year in China. Comparable growth in its own store is in the double digits. Nike is seeing what's working in its own store and will use that information to grow with its retail partners. Nike also benefits from the Chinese consumer's love of basketball. Nike has contracts with the biggest names in basketball to market to this growing audience. Innovation The focus at Nike is on innovation and developing new products. ...Both Pan Chin-lien from The Plum of the Golden Vase and Tu Shen-ching from The Scholars are depicted as brilliant strategists due to their understanding of others and clear recognition of their own desires. Such depictions demonstrate the utilization of intellect and strategies for the wrong cause and demonstrate that such misuse can have detrimental effects. The essay would first discuss the way Chin-lien and Shen-ching both strategize based on their thorough understanding of others. By accurately predicting how others would think and respond in situations, they are able to devise effective plans accordingly. Then we recognize that unlike other characters, Chin-lien and Shen-ching understand what they truly want and appropriately act to achieve...

...Mr. Otte Weight Training Date: May 8, 2010 The first workout that I will be showing you is an upper body workout, not to intense, but it gets the job done. Workout number one is going to deal with the upper body exercises and there’s a lot but I’m just going to give you a few that would be the best ones to do. * Upper Body workout: Day 1, Polymeric Press up: Begin in the standard press-up position on the floor. Your upper body should be supported with your hands on the floor - shoulder- width apart. Your arms are fully extended, and your legs and feet are supported by your toes, which are hip-width apart. To begin the exercise, lower your chest toward the floor by bending your elbows while keeping your trunk and hips extended and "rigid." When your chest is one to two inches from the floor, rapidly straighten your arms and push your body upward as fast as possible. As your arms reach full extension, release your hand contact with the floor and clap your hands together very quickly, before returning your hands to the floor in the same position that they were in before the clap. Repeat this action (lowering, rapid extension, clap and land on your hands) for the prescribed number of repetitions. The polymeric push-up helps to develop upper-body power as well as stabilizing strength in the core muscles. These muscles work together to stabilize the upper body during running, improving running economy. Day 2, Prone Trunk Extensions: Begin by lying face down on the floor...

...elementary school playground. The school was near my home but I had never been to the school after graduation. For some reason, I don't quite remember, but I visited the school ten years after graduation. As soon as I entered the school, I was quite surprised at the school because it looked very different than when I last saw the school. Playground became small, but I know it’s literally not smaller. School walls, which were higher than my height, became as lower as half of my height so that I can see out of school landscape. Boys sometimes jumped down from the wall to show their bravery. But I don't know how they express now. I turned to chin-up bar and I could remember I often used to hang upside down on the chin-up bar for over some minutes thinking that will make me grow up faster. But I regret now that I’m grown up. Just below the chin-up bar, there is sand that I rolled over. I played wrestling with my friends. Even though I was slim figure, I tried to win my friends to impress girls around. In the corner of playground, there are slides. I think I didn't take stairs to go down slides. Instead of going up the stairs of the slides, I would rather enjoy to go up through the sliding side because it made me feel like I conquered the playground. But it made my shoes worn out just like my childhood I sat on the long low stairs that I cheered when field day. The ground no longer needed spray line-marking machine, because it's put in the tiles to see the line convenience instead...

...Literature review The concept of Supply Chain Management is based on two core ideas. The first is that practically every product that reaches an end user represents the cumulative effort of multiple organizations. These organizations are referred to collectively as the supply chain. The second idea is that while supply chains have existed for a long time, most organizations have only paid attention to what was happening within their “four walls.” Few businesses understood, much less managed, the entire chain of activities that ultimately delivered products to the final customer. The result was disjointed and often ineffective supply chains. Supply chain management, then, is the active management of supply chain activities to maximize customer value and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. It represents a conscious effort by the supply chain firms to develop and run supply chains in the most effective & efficient ways possible. Supply chain activities cover everything from product development, sourcing, production, and logistics, as well as the information systems needed to coordinate these activities. The organizations that make up the supply chain are “linked” together through physical flows and information flows. Physical flows involve the transformation, movement, and storage of goods and materials. They are the most visible piece of the supply chain. But just as important are information flows. Information flows allow the various supply chain partners to coordinate...

...Explain three policies or measures the Chinese government has adopted to drive forward the economic reforms in China, according to Doug Guthrie’s China and Globalization, Chapter Four, China in the Global Economy, pg 109-168 Throughout this paper we will explore and examine three factors the Chinese government have adopted. “First, the central government has driven reforms forward through several key policies...” (Guthrie, 2009; page 110) Such policy reforms have allowed China to emerge as one of the largest economies in the world. Secondly, “the government decentralized decision making...”(Guthrie, 2009; page 110). The reductions of decentralized decisions have provided local officials greater flexibility in controlling local development. Lastly I will discuss, how the “government has reformed industrial organizations without privatization” (Guthrie, 2009; page 111). This reform has allowed the private sector to emerge and create new markets. These three factors have helped China change and encourage industrial growth. However such reforms did not occur overnight. I will discuss the early history of the reforms, the transition and the present of the Chinese economy. China began to reform and implement new policies during the early 1980s. These transformations have allowed China to strategically place them in a position of power. An important transformation including “the creation of special economic zones (e.g. Pudong, Shenzhen, Zhongguancun), which allowed firms (domestic...

Throughout the story, the presence changes from three different narratives, Jin Wang and Wei Chin to Danee and Cousin Chin-Kee to the Monkey King of Flower Fruit Mountain. To clear things up a bit, Jin Wang is representing Danee while the Monkey King is Cousin Chin-Kee who comes to check up on Wei Chin, a monkey from Flower Fruit Mountain that the Monkey King sent down to Earth.
