...personal interviews, skill building, and getting consultant’s support. All of these involve personal contact and were effective in making people both aware and interested to the change. The second stage was movement phase, and the key factors that lead to success in this stages was maintaining high credibility. We could gain credibility through getting consultant’s support and getting CEO’s public support. As majority individuals got into interest and trial stages we were able to use town hall meetings and walk the talk, which attracted more workers to be in interest and trial stages. Again, maintaining high credibility was important throughout the stages because low credibility meant low chance with people would buy in to the initiative. Lastly, in the sustain phase, having personal contact with each individual using private interview was an extremely powerful tool for making individuals in trial stages to move up to adoption stage. Moreover, recognizing an adopter, walk the talk , and holding town hall meeting were also...

...The following is a classic story, often used by socialists to highlight the “evils of a capitalist society” – the small town grocer gets mercilessly taken out by the new Wal-Mart in town. The small town grocer may have an established customer base and friendly relations with the community, but it simply can’t match the low prices offered by Wal-Mart. Being a large national company, Wal-Mart has the sprawling global resources and is willing to sacrifice margins to take out local competitors. In the end, customer loyalty means nothing and the grocer goes bankrupt, decades of hard work decimated overnight. This is a well-known anecdote referring to the impact of globalization on small businesses. Once you start up a new business, you plunge into an ocean populated by a few smaller fish, which compete with you for food, and lots of bigger ones, eager to eat you alive. The big fish in the sea tend to be well-connected, multinational beasts taking full advantage of the perks of globalization – such as outsourcing, uneven exchange rates, and low-margin high-volume sales models – making them nearly impossible to compete against. What are the impacts of globalization on the small business owner, and how can you defend yourself from the blows that will inevitably come your way? Globalized Brands In “The Communist Manifesto”, Karl Marx famously warned that small local businesses will inevitably be wiped out by large multinational companies in a form of imperialist capitalism. According...

...camp that they can enjoy. During the beginning of the book, we learnt that they were given little to no time to prepare for leaving to the internment camp. It was a rush decision made by the government to attempt to try to contain all the Japanese from giving information to the Japanese government. Because they were given little time to prepare, all of the belonging that they had either had to be sold, or carried by hand to their next destination. In the story farewell to Manzanar, we learn that secondhand dealers were lurking around trying to buy items that they could not take with them, for extremely cheap. “Mama had to sell this china…he offered her fifteen dollars for it. She said it was a full setting for twelve and worth at least two hundred… he watched for a moment and said he was sure he couldn’t pay more that seventeen fifty for that china. She reached into the red velvet case, took out a dinner plate and hurled it at the floor right in front of his feet.” (Wakatsuki Houston 32) This passage stuck out to me, because I couldn’t imagine the feeling of having to sell every precious thing that you had, and for people to take advantage of that by mocking you with a very low offer. To know that these people had to give up things that they loved, because of a bombing they didn’t cause, is such a low thing to do. I found a picture of a receipt of what looks like someone selling their jewelry to...

...800 square metre gallery which uses a story telling approach, to reveal different viewpoints through tales from the 14th century to the present. The Singapore History Gallery is divided into eight sections highlighting the changes from the past to the modern times while offering its visitors the chance to relieve in the times when the ancestors and elders residing in Singapore once lived in. Out of the many artefacts which I have seen in the gallery, the portrait of an Amah interested me the most. Amahs were indentured domestic female servants generally arriving from Pearl River Delta, China; These Amahs were highly sought after by affluent families, mainly the rich families and colonial expats settled in Singapore. While some of the Amahs came to Singapore to seek better job opportunities to avoid marrying which was seen as a loss of freedom back home, others left their families back in China when they lost their faith their husbands as they had dwindled away all their hard earned money by getting addicted to opium and even resorted to selling their own children. Thus, most Amahs took the oath of celibacy which led them to have pleated hair which was left uncut thereafter, becoming the “ma jies” in Singapore whom often acted as a surrogate parent to her employer’s children, staying and looking after the family for such a long time which was enough to see the kids grow up and form families on their own. These Amahs usually spend their entire lifetime serving the same family during...

...The Surprise Evan Acosta MRKG 1311.S70 Professor Cockerell 04 April 2013 Why was Natsumi’s family excited about their “surprise” for her? You can tell by the connotation of Natsumi’s description of her home in Japan that it is more likely a smaller town instead of a major metropolis; the construction of a fast food chain restaurant would be a big deal. I have a friend who was stationed outside of Tokyo while in the Air Force and in the last year a McDonalds was built in the town. When we had spoken he said that everyone in the town was excited as if they were building an amusement park. Do you think that Natsumi’s reaction of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) was the same as her families? Why or why not? No, she was not excited. Natsumi had mentioned that she had been living in Texas for many years and as a native Texan I can attest to the abundance of KFCs. Natsumi’s reaction was probably one of shock or disappointment; instead of pleasantly surprised. She mentioned that her town was noticeably changed since she was a kid, which seemed to upset her some. Natsumi wanted to get away from the culture of her new life in Texas and return to what she always viewed as home in her heart. What differences do you think there may be in the KFC location in Tokyo and the one in Texas where Natsumi usually eats? Why do you think that KFC is different in Tokyo from the way it is in Texas, even though it is called KFC? I imagine the staple of the KFC in Tokyo would still in chicken;...

...THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES Looking at both debates, it seems both candidates are using lines and words for their ad campaigns to point out the other’s faults and their strengths. The format of a Town Hall setting is not as useful or structured as the last debate at the Lynn University. The Town Hall is too much of a “get your question asked” style with the candidates yelling and talking over each other. The moderators seem to lose control of the debate as it went on and it was more of a shouting match then an actual debate. Also the debates feature a the incumbent, who has 3 ½ years of a record to go on, and the challenger, who hasn’t been a Governor for awhile and has no record, per se, to run on and can easily say ‘I can do better than the President”. As for the debate itself, questions are being asked but neither candidate is willing to give full answers or barely answer the question. They seem to already have a script of what they intend to say and repeatedly veer off topic to other points they want to make. As far as the Social and economic issues, they are clear contrast on how each candidate wants to tackle things. The one pressing question I would have for both of them are how they expect to get the things down with a Congress controlled by the Republicans and the Senate controlled by the Democrats. For example, President Obama said “Fiscal Cliff” is not going to happen but how does he get the Republicans to go along with the not letting sequestration without...

This paper systematically assesses the degree of standardisation (and adaptation) of four commonly identified retail marketing mix activities – merchandise, location and store format, the selling and service environment, and market communication – within three countries. These countries – Sweden, the UK and China – represent different cultural settings and are markets in which IKEA has been operating for different lengths of time. The data upon which the comparison is based was generated from personal interviews, in-country consumer research, company documentation...

This indeed sets IKEA, operating on markets in Europe, US as well as Asia and Australia, apart among international retailers. Often the theoretical conclusions in international marketing literature, as well as empirical evidence, argue convincingly for the more adaptation (to different markets) in different national markets. But is IKEA so standardized in marketing strategies? So far there are quite few, and very dated, empirical studies of IKEA marketing strategies (yet many refer to IKEA as having a standardized marketing strategy). Here marketing activites are conceptualized to concern: Merchandise - putting together an assortment of products (e.g., national and retailer brands, pricing and pricing...

...1. Introduction With the development of urbanization, immigrants become one of the special and important parts of metropolises. The issue of their integration into local society has become a new topic for many researchers. Especially in China, with the thirty years of reform and open relations, a huge number of domestic immigrants have migrated into the big urban areas. They are facing many obstacles in their struggle to make a position in a new environment. Is there anything that the urban planners and designers can do to help them blend into the society and give them a sense of belonging and identity? This research will make efforts to address this question and discuss the relation between immigrants and urban environments, particularly the public open spaces by a series of research methodologies. Some literatures will be reviewed and discussed to give a general understanding of the relation between urbanisation and immigrants and the effects of public open space. Then, in order to narrow the research scope, the investigation of immigrants’ social integration condition will be conducted in Guangzhou which is one of the most developed metropolises in China with large amounts of domestic immigrants. Moreover, the white-collar immigrants were chosen as the main research target group. In general, “white-collar” refers to a salaried professional or an educated worker who performs semi-professional office, administrative, and sales coordination tasks, as opposed to a blue-collar...
