...I Am a U.S. Citizen How Do I… Help My Relative Become a U.S. Permanent Resident? A1 Customer Guide M-555 (January 2013) N As a citizen of the United States, you may help a relative become a lawful permanent resident of the United States by obtaining what is often referred to as a “green card.” To do so, you need to sponsor your relative and be able to prove that you have enough income or assets to support your relative(s) when they come to the United States. You begin the process by filing Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative. This form establishes the family relationship that exists between you and your relative. The form is available on our website at www.uscis.gov. Sometimes the I-130 can be filed together with an application for permanent residence (Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status). This is discussed below. Which relatives may I petition for? A U.S. citizen can file a petition for the following relatives: • Husband or wife; • Children, married or unmarried.1 A U.S. citizen who is at least 21 years or older may also petition for the following relatives: • Parents; • Brothers or sisters. When you submit your petition, you are required to provide evidence to prove your relationship to the person for whom you are filing. What does the petition do for my relative? Filing a Form I-130 and proving a qualifying relationship gives your relative a place in line with others waiting to immigrate from the same country or region based...

My Effort to Fit in American Culture

...My effort to fit in American culture My idea of what American culture has changed greatly since I have emigrated from my home land of Mongolia. As an undergraduate student, I participated in American studies and English as a secondary language. This did not prepare me for the cultural shock and social obstacles that I would have to overcome. My goals of establishing a new life and fitting into the melting pot of the American culture were highly understated and unrealistic. It was a dark and rainy day when I first arrived at O’Hare International Airport. When I arrived in America, I had a student visa, a partial scholarship, and five hundred dollars in my purse. I had confidence that I could pay the remainder of my tuition, living expenses, and book fees with a part time job. I was quick to learn that my visa did not open the doors to my expectations. The bureaucratic cultural restrictions were about to make a lasting impression on all my expectations and plans. According to the homeland security regulations, a foreign student must have a work permission document to earn any kind of supplemental income. If I was given a waiver, I would then be restricted to work no more than twenty hours a week. The college I was planning to attend had a strict policy that did not allow international students to be employed, even on a part time basis. I then learned that any student who did not have a proper documentation could not obtain a social security card. I found myself in...

...statisticians place that number at approximately four percent (475,000) of the undocumented population (Batalova, Terrazas, 2010). According to Tony Choi, a South Korean illegal immigrant who has been in the United States since he was 8, “Many Asians consider schooling, and life in general, in the West as superior to that in their home countries. Moving to the United States, particularly in pursuit of better education, can be part of an upward strategy for many South Koreans who later become unauthorized immigrants” (Lim 2013). Choi and his family came to the United States during the financial crisis of 1997 due to his father’s failed business. Often documented immigrants come for educational purposes but do not understand the visa program, and apply for a tourist visa which runs out very quickly. They end up staying ignorantly beyond their authorized time in pursuit of a better education and employment opportunities. One of the largely overlooked aspects of the North American Free Trade Agreement is how the trade pact catapulted illegal immigrants over the borders in record numbers. A flood of highly subsidized corn inundating the Mexican market has exiled millions of rural farmers. Prior to the enactment of NAFTA, Mexican bureaucrats claimed that manufacturing jobs would fill the void left by vanishing jobs on family farms. The Mexican President, Carlos Salinas, assured the citizens of his nation that NAFTA would result in the “export of goods, not people.” (UC Davis, 2000). However...

Visa

...country is a policy that would cost nothing: establish a new class of visa for startup founders. The biggest constraint on the number of new startups that get created in the US is not tax policy or employment law or even Sarbanes-Oxley. It's that we won't let the people who want to start them into the country. Letting just 10,000 startup founders into the country each year could have a visible effect on the economy. If we assume 4 people per startup, which is probably an overestimate, that's 2500 new companies. Each year. They wouldn't all grow as big as Google, but out of 2500 some would come close. By definition these 10,000 founders wouldn't be taking jobs from Americans: it could be part of the terms of the visa that they couldn't work for existing companies, only new ones they'd founded. In fact they'd cause there to be more jobs for Americans, because the companies they started would hire more employees as they grew. The tricky part might seem to be how one defined a startup. But that could be solved quite easily: let the market decide. Startup investors work hard to find the best startups. The government could not do better than to piggyback on their expertise, and use investment by recognized startup investors as the test of whether a company was a real startup. How would the government decide who's a startup investor? The same way they decide what counts as a university for student visas. We'll establish our own accreditation procedure. We know who one another...

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

...wasn't for him, my parents, grandparents, and I would not be living here in the land of opportunities. Because of my uncle, my dad was able to work here as a lawful permanent resident. Meaning, he is a foreign national given the privilege of permanently living and working in the United States. In order for this to unfold, the immigrant has to have a relative whom is already living in the United States who is willing to sponsor them and prove that they have enough income to support them and/or their family. With this, of course there are many steps that follow. To begin, the USCIS must approve an immigrant visa petition filed by the sponsor (my uncle) for the immigrant. Then, they would need to demonstrate income and take total responsibility by completing and signing an Affidavit of support document. Once these steps are completed, the immigrant is able to apply for a visa which will allow them to stay in the United States as a permanent resident. Which is what my father did. As much as I was grateful to my uncle for giving us an opportunity to better our lives, I must admit, I was also distraught. Being foreign in an alien country was...

Why Are People Religious?

...level, Supreme Being. Like a child who never ceases to ask questions, we need detailed explanations, specific examples, and realistic actions to understand every situation that is presented to us. Some people find it very difficult to follow religion because of the abstract side of it. Religion has positively impacted our societies in the sense that people are able to live in communities with moral rules and values. I can say that religion has had a very positive impact on me; today I have a better attitude towards rejections and refusals. It took me a lot of tears to accept Robert H. Schuller’s citation; “Failure doesn't mean you are a failure it just means you haven't succeeded yet”.
