Objective: Students will verbally explain three characteristics of the Chinese New Year through the study of various learning material. This is for a Kindergarten class.
I will first connect and engage the students. Teacher: Today I brought a book I love called Dragon Dance: A Chinese New Year written by Joan Holub. It tells a story about the Chinese New Year and all the things you can do to celebrate this festive holiday. We will read the book in just a little while, but first I would like all of you to gather around the chart board and let’s brainstorm about the New Year Days holiday in our country. The children take turns listing things about New Years: calander, ball drop, clock, hats, whistles. etc…. Teacher: Those are all great words that help us describe New Years in the United States. Today we are going to learn about the most important holiday for people in China. It is the Chinese New Year. Sometimes it is called the Spring Festival. We are going to learn why it is so important to the Chinese people and we will explore some of the cultures and traditions of this holiday. I will point to the world map posted in the classroom and ask the children if they know where China is? The students will respond by saying and pointing to where they think China is on the map. Teacher: We are here and China is all the way over here. China is a country on the continent of Asia. It is the biggest country in Asia and has the largest population in the world. Let’s take a look at this poster I brought in. Here is a picture of the Chinese Flag. Does it look like the American Flag? Students: No, the American Flag is red, white and blue. Teacher: That’s right! The poster shows some of the many mountains found in China. This side of the poster shows some children in China. Here is their school which is close to the mountains. Here it is shows the children in gym class. In China the students have gym class every day. This little boy has a pet goat? Would you like to have a goat for a pet? The children respond to the question by some saying yes and others saying no. Teacher: This is a picture of the huge fireworks show that takes place during the Chinese New Year celebration. It looks like they have a lot of fun celebrating this holiday!
Teacher: Let’s go ahead and get ready to read our book Dragon Dance. Before we get started let’s talk about what happens as we listen, view and read a book. Reading isn’t just about the words. Reading also helps us think about the information and makes us think of our own thoughts and pictures. Reading is about thinking and thinking matters! While we are reading the story we learn about the dragon and the Chinese Dragon Dance. Teacher: In China the dragon represents wisdom and wealth. It is also said that the dragon scares away the bad spirits and bad luck. I have brought in this colorful Chinese dragon kite and we are all going to dance around the room with it just like they did in the book. I think we are all going to have lots of good luck this year! The students respond with laughter and then proceed to do the dragon dance. Teacher: How would you like to make a paper dragon for the Chinese New Year? Students: Yes, that would be cool! Teacher: While we are sitting down in our chairs at the tables making our dragons I will put in a cd of Chinese music for us to listen to.
Teacher: So great everyone. I love all the colors you used to make your dragons! Last night I went to the downtown library and checked out this DVD for us to watch. It is called Chinese New Year. We will get to see a Chinese New Years parade and we will also get to see some of the customs and traditions the Chinese people use to celebrate this important Chinese holiday.
After we have viewed the dvd we will gather as a group around our chart board and discuss the things we have talked about and make a list of characteristics of the Chinese New Year celebration. We will discuss who celebrates Chinese New Year, what the dragon symbolizes and what the significance of the color red is.

Since Chinese culture has a very long history, there is a very traditional way of celebrating the New Year. They also developed their own calendar system called the Lunar Calendar. The Chinese New Year appears very changeable from day to day every year, because it is based on this calendar. A long time ago, most of the people in China were farmers. Every day life followed the cycles of planting and harvest. The New Year s festival was held after the fall harvest and before the start of the spring planting season. The Chinese New Year is the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, and it lasts for fifteen days until the full moon. Each year the holiday falls sometime between January 21 and February 19. This year, the Chinese New Year is going to be on February 16. Chinese people also developed twelve different animals to stand for each year. After twelve years, the cycle of animals begins again. The animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. A week before the New Year, every Chinese family starts to prepare for it. ...Chinese New Year: Why many will travel home for good Every Chinese New Year as people board trains, planes, buses, cars and mopeds to head home for the warmth of the family reunion, they arrive battered and beleaguered, each with their own tale of travelling woe. The 20-hour journeys with standing room only. The pickpockets. And just the sheer overwhelming numbers of people, thronging every platform, forming every queue. So when the whole country seemingly becomes one large crowd it might seem unlikely that China would be shocked by pictures of a large crowd. But then the Guangzhou Railway Station crowd was a particularly special one. The snarl-up began on Monday with bad weather further north causing the cancellation or delay to some services out of Guangzhou. As word spread of the increasingly large throng of waiting passengers, even more people began turning up extra early for their trains and the problem only intensified. 'Dumplings in a bowl' At the peak, 100,000 people were crammed shoulder to shoulder on the giant square in front of the station, spilling out into side roads. "We are like dumplings in a bowl," one man told me. He faced a three-hour wait to clear security and then, once finally aboard his train, an eight-hour journey home. "I am very tired," another young woman said "but when I think about my mother and father at home I feel warm and I want to be with them sooner." Despite the extraordinary scenes...

Chinese New Year

...It’s the season when pundits traditionally make predictions about the year ahead. Mine concerns international economics: I predict that 2010 will be the year of China. And not in a good way. China has become a major financial and trade power. But it doesn’t act like other big economies. Instead, it follows a mercantilist policy, keeping its trade surplus artificially high. And in today’s depressed world, that policy is, to put it bluntly, predatory. Here’s how it works: Unlike the dollar, the euro or the yen, whose values fluctuate freely, China’s currency is pegged by official policy at about 6.8 yuan to the dollar. At this exchange rate, Chinese manufacturing has a large cost advantage over its rivals, leading to huge trade surpluses. Under normal circumstances, the inflow of dollars from those surpluses would push up the value of China’s currency, unless it was offset by private investors heading the other way. And private investors are trying to get into China, not out of it. But China’s government restricts capital inflows, even as it buys up dollars and parks them abroad, adding to a $2 trillion-plus hoard of foreign exchange reserves. This policy is good for China’s export-oriented state-industrial complex, not so good for Chinese consumers. But what about the rest of us? In the past, China’s accumulation of foreign reserves, many of which were invested in American bonds, was arguably doing us a favor by keeping interest rates low — although what we did with...

Introduction The paper is about Ho- land Hopia Chinese Deli’s different processes, and how human resource management is practiced. The group will be discussing about the background of those processes, and the human resource management practices of the company. In doing so, the group will be able to slowly transition to the identification of the problem in the human resource department, to provide clear insights about the company. After the problem has been identified, the group will then try to apply the learned concepts of strategic and proper human resource management from the class SHURMAN to Ho- land Hopia Chinese Deli, so that the company will be able to improve their biggest contributor in the company: human resource. According to Mello (2014), management usually think human resource to be a mediocre helper, in terms of helping in the achievement of the company’s goals. Not only that, but managers are hesitant in investing heavily in human resource management simply because it is difficult to quantify their outputs. That of course was a misunderstanding, and a misconception. The group intends to support Mello’s work by applying his concepts into the company. Ho- land Hopia is a company in the foodservice...

...adapt to the new environment since there are significant differences between the States and the place where I was brought up—Hong Kong, especially in several major areas of food culture, environment, and lifestyle.              One big difference between the States and Hong Kong is food culture. “Pizzas, burgers and French Fries are our regular meals!” one American student told me. I do agree with her, for I have seen pizzas, burgers and French fries appear in the school cafeteria every day since I arrived. Moreover, McDonald’s, Burger King and Papa Gino’s, which sell fast food, dominate in the States. If you stay in the States for a while, you’ll definitely familiarize yourself with various types of pizzas and burgers: Pepperoni Pizza—pizza dough topped with tomato sauce mixture, cheese and pepperoni; Hawaiian Pizza—combines sweet with sour; Double Cheese Burger—consists of beef patties, melted cheese and mustard. However, for the Chinese, steamed rice, cooked or fried vegetables and fish are main meals in Hong Kong. Apart from that, food in the United States only satisfies hunger. In contrast, food in Hong Kong “is also an expression of cultural identity and the choice or rejection of certain types of food, the ways in which specific types of food are consumed and the context in which it is consumed tells us a lot about the culture” (“Food Culture”). Zong Zi (dumplings) is a Dragon Boat Festival food in remembrance of Qi Yuan—a famous historical figure in Chinese History (“Food...

China

...China China is an ancient culture with numerous regional and national traditions and values. While some of the traditions have died out, many are still a very important part of the Chinese society. The role of men and women in China has changed significantly. In China (100 years ago up to a few decades ago), women were treated as inferior in comparison to men, and were restricted to the confines of their homes to raise the children and clean (Live Science, 2013). They would also sew and weave, and prepare food for guests. Women were thought of as yielding, receptive, passive, reflective, and tranquil, where men were hard, active, assertive, and dominating. The men were the sole income and ‘head of the household’. Their job was to bring home money and food for the wife and children while the woman stayed at home. Throughout much of China’s history, women were undermined and almost used as slaves. When communism was introduced (in the 1920’s), women and men became more equal, although they are still not completely equivalent in terms of social and economic status. The One-Child-Policy has pushed the number of women down in China, due to Chinese parents only wanting boys (they are thought of as more ‘beneficial’). Men are still the ‘dominant race’, as they are higher in the percentage of the population in China. In Australia, women and men are almost completely equal. Both women and men both work in politics, manual labour, education, law enforcement, etc. with almost equivalent...
