Introduction
There is widespread recognition that as competition intensifies and technological differentiation becomes more difficult, design offers a potent way to position and differentiate products. In the article “Design- Oriented New Product Development: LG Illustrates What It Takes To Be Successful” the authors suggest that the two approaches in reflecting a customer’s point of view in new product development (NPD) are customer-following approach and customer-leading approach. The former utilizes expressed consumer needs and the latter focuses on consumers’ latent needs. The article identified design as an important role in new product development process, especially in the case of user-driven products such as mobile phones. Thus, the number of customer-leading approaches is increasing rapidly through design-oriented NPD. An example of this is LGE’s Chocolate phone that has been a success since it was launched in 2005. The theme of the article revolves around identifying the dynamic evolutionary process and key success factors of design oriented NPD for the case of LG Electronics’ Chocolate Phone. The research method used was interpretive and case-based. The article discussed topics involving Chocolate Phone’s conceptualization, development, and strategies LGE used to achieve success. There are four phases of Chocolate Phone’s development process including product concept phase, design phase, development phase and marketing. As for the principal success factors, the article stressed that the most important success factor of chocolate phone development was the adoption of the design-oriented NPD strategy which is a completely different approach from the existing function-oriented development strategy. The difference between the two is the sequence of the steps followed in developing a strategy. In the design oriented NPD, firms find and reflect market or customer needs first then they develop and acquire critical technology, while the function-oriented NPD follows the reverse of this sequence. In marketing LGE decided to undertake emotional marketing that emphasized communication with customers.
Success factors from the design perspective include appointing a distinguished designer and combining customer insight and communication skills. From a marketing point of view, key factors include finding outside marketing professionals and gathering ideas from the outside. Finally, from an organizational perspective, it is important to share the design concept among related departments and to change engineering-oriented thinking to a market-oriented frame of mind.

LGE and Innovation
One of the article’s key assumptions is that because of strong market competition, innovation is a great factor in business strategies. In line with this, innovation is clearly a function of product concept and design and customer satisfaction is a function of innovation making customer satisfaction dependent on product concept and design. Based on the article, in 2004 LG Electronics suffered from such a poor financial performance and LGE came up to develop an innovative phone that would not only meet customer needs but also be different from its competitors’ product, giving LGE a competitive advantage and higher sales. Innovation now has become a key factor in the success of LGE’s new product.
