Named Area – Newcastle
For my geography fieldwork I was required to take a trip to Newcastle to assess whether or not the rebranding schemes were successful. Within this trip we concluded many things and gathered numerous results, which ranged massively. After the investigation I was ordered to analyse and present the results of my findings in different ways.
The first way that I analysed and presented my results was by placing the different questions/answers/results into a spreadsheet and organising them so that the information was easy to acknowledge and read. The spreadsheet was brilliant for working out numerous calculations that I needed to carry out. For example, when I needed to work out the mean, median, mode and range I could simply type the equation in and the correct value would show. An example is for ‘The Baltic’ I was able to work out the mean (4) of people that were walking around the area (pedestrian count).
The second way that I analysed the results was by creating different charts (including pie charts, bar charts) for the different results for my questionnaire. For example, one of the questions I asked was ‘did you know the focus of Newcastle’s rebranding schemes was arts and media?’. For this question the answers were simply either yes or no – the results I gathered were that 73% of people said no, and the remaining 27% said yes. This method of presentation was really effective as it allowed me to visualise the results I gathered really easy – the charts were incredibly simple to read.
Within my investigation I was able to take pictures of the areas in which we studied. One of the areas was ‘The Sage’. During my visit here, I took pictures of the area from all different angles and points of view so that I could compare my own images with those I could find of the areas previous appearance. I successfully found images that were taken in extremely similar angles to the pictures I had taken myself. I opened a document and placed the pictures new to one another, this gave me a good view of the area before and after the rebranding schemes and this gave me the chance to analyse exactly how much rebranding had taken place. This was clear and evident through good quality photos. The idea of using photos was excellent for analysing the successfulness of rebranding schemes around Newcastle. When I was looking at the images of ‘Newcastle train station’ I could see there was a massive difference between the number of people in the pictures and the overall quality of the area, this signifies that the ideology of using photos as a method of research is very accurate/useful.
Another way I was able to make a full analysis of the rebranding successfulness was simply by reading up and carrying out secondary research of the areas I was going to be visiting. An example of this is that I searched articles on the topic of rebranding in Newcastle (only for the areas that applied to my investigation), when I found significant information I was able to summarise it in my own words and then read over it. This gave me a good analysis prior to the investigation.
Yet another way how I was able to present and analyse my results was by writing out an evaluation for my findings. This evaluation was written with precision and care and it outlined all of the key information on the overall investigation – this evaluation was extremely reliable as it allowed me to read an in depth piece of work that summarised my findings and everything necessary to the investigation.
In the overall data there was many different values and numbers that contributed to the closure of the investigation, what I mean by this is that there were many different patterns and trends, which outlined the outcomes of the investigation. All of these patterns and trends, which were easily visible, showed me a good analysis of the overall findings for the investigation.
In conclusion, I can say that these different sources and methods of analysis and presentation were extremely reliable, they produced solid, good quality results which were extremely useful for bringing my investigation to an end.
