His other brother his name was marius barnard and he became south african cardiac surgeon , and inventor of critical illness insurance. His mother maria, played the church organ and his father adam barnard, was a church pastor. Christiaan barnard was born in a small country the town of beaufort west in south africa. Christiaan barnard went to training in america, and became a leading heart surgeon. he went to two universities, the university of capetown, and the university of minnesota. later after training he worked as a surgeon at the groote schuur hospital in cape town.Barnard also spent 3 months at the medical college of virginia, gaining experience with immunosuppressive regimens for patients undergoing kidney transplantation. …show more content…
On december 3,1967 christiaan barnard led the surgical team that performed the first human-to-human heart transplant. 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky,with a debilitating heart condition, receives the first human heart transplant at Groote Schuur hospital in cape town south africa. Also lewis washkansky , received the transplant from denise darvall.18 days later he died from pneumonia. Denise darvall,was a 25-year-old woman who was fatally injured in a car accident so then she is a heart donor. The operation on denise darvall, started shortly after midnight on a saturday night and was completed the next morning just before 6 am. This was the first operation of its kind.The second patient , Philip blaiberg, was able to leave hospital after the transplant and was alomost alive for 19 whole months.it made a household name
