...China’s real GDP has already surpassed 7 trillion US dollars in 2011 in current dollars, and it has replaced Japan as the world’s second largest economy. People in China also have significant improvements in their standards of living and material life. However, my findings contradict the notion that an increase in income and standard of living will gain people happiness. My major findings show that income inequality and other major social problems, such as lack of religious belief and faith, political problems, and family burden have contributed to the decline of happiness among Chinese people. Other negative feelings emerging with the rapid economic growth, such as greed, interpersonal distrust and less compassion show adverse effects on Chinese happiness. I conclude the research by suggesting possible future researches for further studies. 1. Introduction After the Cultural Revolution ended in 1978, China launched a comprehensive reformation in its state controlled economy under the new leadership, Mr. Deng Xiaoping. Since then, China has gradually opened its door to the world and begun its transition into a market economy. (Chai, 1997) Over the past thirty years, China had the most enduring and rapid economic growth in the human history. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Saint Louis, China’s average GDP growth is nearly 10 percent for the past 30 year. (FRED, 2013) In urban China, the average disposable income increase more than 71 times in the past three decades, from...

...Abstract This paper is written to provide education about cultural diversity in the health care field. The goal was to investigate the faith beliefs of Baha’ism, Sikhism, and Buddhism, and compare their spiritual perspective on healing, as well as the critical components of healing. These were compared with Christianity to determine the similarities and differences. This will be reviewed to better educate caregivers as they minister to various cultures in the hospital and community. Introduction Religious faith and beliefs of the patient must be integrated with the scientific medical care in order to provide holistic care to the patent. Religion and the health of individuals and populations play an important role in the social, behavioral, and health sciences. Coping strategies, health behaviors and attitudes are influenced by one’s religious believe. Health care providers caring for patients from different religious traditions must understand the diversity in faith in order to provide religious and culturally sensitive high quality care. Over 1200 different religions are practiced in the USA (Bryan, 1999). This paper will discuss the brief background of the three religions, address obstacles according to the religion that are being discussed but not all religions have them and the important component of healing process of three religions. If it is found that cheating and/or plagiarism did take place in the writing of this paper, I understand the possible consequences of the act/s, which include expulsion from Indian Wesleyan University. A Nursing Manifesto My personal philosophy of nursing is founded in the Christian principle of self-sacrifice. It is depicted in the story recounted in the Gospels of the woman who broke her jar of costly nard ointment over the feet of Jesus at great cost to herself. It is through a deep and abiding relationship with Christ that I am empowered to provide nursing care that ministers to the whole person (spirit, mind, and body), operating in the revelation that He brings to every situation regardless of culture, environment, or health status. As I choose to enter the nurse-patient relationship, acknowledging my need for His wisdom and guidance, His Presence is drawn into that relationship, revealing His love, care, and concern for that individual’s needs. It is my life laid down for another. It is my vision for those in healthcare to demonstrate the dynamic power of Christ through lives broken and spilled out for Him. Hence the title: A Nursing Manifesto: Christ in me the hope of God revealing Himself in redemptive activity. Personal Values and Beliefs In the post-modern and post-Christian world that we live in today, it has become...

...I found myself having compassion for these two students who inadvertently plagiarized. I can see how that could happen. This is my first time writing papers since I attended graduate school in 1996. Like the students in the article, I did not receive direct instruction on how to prevent plagiarism. As a graduate level student, I was advised by a professor to not copy information when writing, handed a plagiarism policy and warned of the consequences. That was the extent of it. As a Christian, I am called to live my life in such a way that reflects Jesus in all I do. The Holy Spirit within me helps me do this. While I would not purposely copy someone else’s ideas and present them as my own, I do find myself worrying about unintentional plagiarism in my writing. Do I paraphrase or summarize correctly? Do I cite properly? Are those supposed to be page numbers in parentheses or just the author’s last name and...

...Reflection Jeremy Simms Theology 104 Doctor Jones June 30, 2012 Reflection: I. Introduction: Throughout this course of study I have been challenged, and my awareness as a Christian has been heightened. There have been several questions raised that deserve not only an answer, but diligence in the research and understanding necessary to answer with confidence, vigor and enthusiasm. The first question that will be answered is simple in thought, but more complex in true understanding. Does the Bible have authority? Next, we will discuss the importance of personal testimonies in sharing the gospel. Finally, we will look at life as a Christian. If a person is a Christian, does it matter how they live their life? Throughout the following pages these questions will be explored and answered fully, truly and completely. II. Section One: Does the Bible have authority? Many people read the Bible with cynicism in their hearts and attempt to be overly critical as a result. This is true for both Christians and non-believers alike. In some ways it seems easier to look for a mistake or try to disprove scripture instead of having true faith. This poses the question. Does the Bible have authority? If so, where does its authority come from and how do we know? There are many arguments that show the Bible’s authority and confirm the scripture is the word of God. The most powerful to me personally is the convicting, convincing...

...The Vehement Link Between Video Games and Aggression Charlotte M. Roberts Liberty University Online Author Note This research paper is a short and cited, Biblically based review, of previously documented evidence on behavioral links between video games and violence. The Vehement Link Between Video Games And Aggression Researchers from the University of Innsbruck, examined 98 studies that tested close to 37,000 participants from the start of the year 2009 (this study was published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin and was a “meta-analysis.” http://www.theguardian.com/science/head-quarters/2014/may/06/violent-video-games-murder-aggression-ann-maguire ). In this study, they came to the realization that video games do affect social behaviours of players of violent video games. Between prosocial outcomes and aggressive outcomes, it was evident that players who participated in games with more aggressive and violent plots and tendencies, (Call of Duty, Halo, and Ghost Recon) had a decrease in acts of kindness, care, and compassion- or altruism-, and an increase in aggressive behaviour, and where more likely to become misanthropic- disliking human-kind and avoiding human society. They also made an interesting discovery that supported the idea that games such as “Super Mario Sunshine,” (a game released by Nintendo in 2002, intended for the GameCube-http://www.mariowiki.com/Super_Mario_Sunshine)- where the objective of the game is that of a “prosocial” nature- created...

...a distorted view that focuses on terrorists and extremists. Even though this religion teaches peace and love, because of highly publicized Islamic fundamentalists who have abused and defamed the name of Islam there are stereotypes and distrust geared towards the group. The purpose of this paper is to give a brief insight into the teachings of Islam and how those teaching promote love and peace, not war and bloodshed, in spite of the misconceptions. Understanding the Teachings of Islam Right now, Islam is a highly controversial and sensitive issue in today’s world and there are many misconceptions about its beliefs, values, and goals. The condition of Islam right now is in chaos because of the acts of terrorists and extremists. There needs to be an understanding that the religion of Islam does not portray violence and hate that most see in the media today. The religion of Islam is not very different from other highly practiced religions in the world. Many see Islam through a fallacious view that focuses on terrorists and extremists. Even though this religion teaches mercy and compassion, it has been abused by these people to change focus of the true meaning. The purpose of this paper is to give a brief insight into the teachings of Islam and how this religion is not about the violence and hate. By discussing its basic principles and practices there can be a better understanding of the religion. Islam is a highly practiced religion, even thought there are some variations...

...Assignment: Jesus & Mohammed Paper Jesus and Mohammed have shaped the whole world for hundred upon hundreds of years. Cultures that have followed as well as worshiped these two people have been through wealth, as well as poverty (mostly) war and even some peace. Jesus and Mohammed have very similar aspects, also there are some very different dynamics whoever their story’s can become intertwined both past, present and future. Reviewing such topics such as history including their deaths, how they are worshiped and last but not least how people are reacting to the past in relation to Jesus and Mohammed currently. Allowing time to explore and compare/contrast the various religions that derives in part from Jesus and Mohammed can be confusing, thrilling, and entertaining. Tracing the lives of Jesus and Mohammed historically can be challenging due to the fact that there are some scientist that post relatively strong arguments that there is very little historical proof of the life of Jesus outside of the Bible, and Mohammed beyond word of mouth transfer via the Quran. Although and despite the gaining evidence which disputes the factual proof against either of these prophets/son of God being legitimate, the evidence. shreds of evidence that is for Jesus and Mohammed is also evident. Some of the facts relating to Jesus historically include the Jewish historian Josephus who was born in approximately 37 CE, notice the “CE” because at this point cultures had not begun using BC and...

...Why by Bart D. Ehrman, I want to deliver some comments on the book, as well as the way Ehrman presented his argument. On the overall, this book is easy to read and understand. That is the purpose of Ehrman when he wrote the book on textual criticism for a lay audience “…who know nothing about textual criticism but who might like to learn something about how scribes were changing scripture and about how we can recognize where they did so”. I think this is also the main thesis of Misquoting Jesus. Throughout this book, Ehrman wants to point out that through long period of transmission, “the Bible is not inerrant at all but contains mistakes” . Also, the targeted audiences of Ehrman are not specifically Christians, but whoever has interest in the field of history, religion. In this paper, I will go chapter by chapter and examine Ehrman’s thesis. In the introduction, Ehrman begins with his personal background and reveals how the New Testament affected his life in general and his spiritual life in particular. He was born and grew up in a “churchgoing but not particularly a religious family”. However everything was changed after he joined Campus Life Youth for Christ club, which later on led him to Moody Bible Institute where he got his diploma. His education continued at Wheaton College and Princeton. During the time in Princeton, Ehrman faced what he called “a turning point.” Ehrman began to think that there were mistakes in Scripture and the floodgate was open: “What we have are copies...

This paper is not written to sway anyone form any other belief system that they may have. It is only to give information in regards to whom He was and is. This will be done by answering four questions: What is His history, character, purpose and plan? As a result, the answering of following questions will leave the reader more informed about what he/she may not have known regarding the man known as—Jesus. ...you agree with it. Over the years there have been studies done to try and justify or discredit the actions surrounding the death penalty. Whether you agree or disprove the punishment doesn’t make it right or wrong. The process of capital punishment has been around a very long time. Through the years societies have put their own twists and added their personal variations to the concept. While the death penalty will never lose its ability to start a great debate, who is right and who is wrong? One thing stand the same, whichever side you’re on, you picked that side for a reason and that’s what you believe in, no matter what anyone else says. Well the church is the same way, they have a viewpoint and have taken a stand as well. During this paper we examine the ideas and thoughts of the church as a whole, and how they feel about the death penalty and how it is used in our society. Throughout history, one of the most influential institutions in society has been the church. No matter the demographic location, the religious influence can been seen in almost every aspect of the culture in that area. One reason why religion is so influential is that religion gives a moral foundation for behaviors. Morals are believed to be from a higher power, mainly from God. So when one debates the issues dealing with behaviors, and the laws that govern those behaviors, religion ends up finding itself in the conversation one way or another. Religious institutes always find themselves in the middle...

...Juli Kent Spiritual Activism 15 October 2013 Critical Reading Paper # 2 When I was finished reading the chapters in Maparyan’s book The Womanist Idea, I had to go back and re-read her definition of womanism. Summed up, she states: “…womanists are simultaneously concerned with rectifying the relationships between humans and other humans, humans and nature, and humans and the spirit world.” (pg. 35) In the required reading this week, Maparyan explores the activist work of three women, including her own heart wrenching story, and how it ties into the definition as mentioned above. In chapter 10, Speaking Truth Inside Power, Maparyan talks about Preg Govender’s work and how she was a trail blazer, promoting “the importance of inner and outer change” (pg. 253) for the relationships between humans and the love, compassion, and interconnectedness required to break down barriers of race, class, and gender in politics. Govender was an advocate for meditation and believed that it “deserves a more prominent and unapologetic place in our social change repertoire.” (pg. 251) I can agree that through meditation, real change can occur. In my own practice and research on the topic of meditation, I am finding more and more evidence of the changes meditation brings into my own personal life and I believe that when we are able to make personal transformations that bring about love, compassion, mindfulness and forgiveness, we can start making changes in the world around us. Also in the...
