Are you able to comprehend the confrontations faced by an autistic child? In the book “The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time” by Mark Haddon, the reader is given the opportunity to understand the challenges faced by the protagonist of the story, (Christopher Boone) and what he had done to prevail the many challenges he had faced as an autistic child. In order to gain a sense of maturity an individual must overcome difficult challenges. This will be demonstrated by examining Christopher Boone’s ability to learn and talk to people and his ability to deal with new environments.

Christopher does not like going to new places because he does not like change, particularly if he does not know what is going to happen. This can be illustrated in the part of the novel, when he is trying to find the train station: “This is why I don’t like new places. If I am in a place I know, like home, or school, or the bus, or the shop, or the street, I have seen almost everything in it beforehand and all I have to do is look at the things that have changed or moved.”( Haddon 140 ). I had chosen this quote, because it strongly illustrates why Christopher does not like new environments, in turn he constantly demands to be aware of his surroundings. This was an immensely important challenge for Christopher to overcome, because he would not have been able to handle new environments with an appropriate approach, rather than feeling distraught when introduced to a new environment, which gives him a sense of maturity and a sense of his capabilities. In the section of the story, where Christopher had been expressing his fear of going to a new environment and leaving a well-known environment: “Normally I would have got more and more frightened if I was walking to school, because I had never done it before. But I was frightened in two different ways. And one way was being frightened by being far away from a place I was used to, and the other being frightened by being near where Father lived ” (Haddon 136). I had chosen this quote because it had demonstrated the mental state that Christopher had been in, while he had begun his journey. This had been an immensely important challenge for Christopher to overcome, because he would be able to deal with environments with a much more mannered approach, and have new opportunities that sanction him to see his full potential.
