In the contemporary culture, artists are very important in the eyes of the global population often been seen as advocates for social issues. In times of hardship, they have the big responsibility of setting a good example for their followers. This is explicitly what Patti Smith’s is doing with “Note for the Future”, Chrystos does with her poem “Morning Song” and Bob Dylan does with his folk song “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”. These text touch upon some facades of the fights for social justice. Exploring the duty of the future generation in this vein, the responsibility we have as a citizen of the world and the sad reality of the longevity of this fight. Further, individually they affected many people, but together they had a massive impact on…show more content… Additionally, the survival imagery makes a bold statement regarding the incapacity of the ordinary citizen to stand to a power greater than himself. In these few lines, we can detect a tone of hopefulness and determination. These two texts appeal to the moral side of humans. By illustrating our world as one that has been failed by older generations in the case of Smith and the ones that we have fought to keep us alive in the case of Chrystos. These two women took a standby addressing subjects such as protest and inaction. Violent protest and silent protest in Chrystos case, protest that is seen as controversial. Diversely, in Smith ’s case acknowledging the wrongdoings of US citizen in part of the chaos that currently reigns.
Furthermore, in similar fashion Dylan and Chrystos explore the idea that justice for people is an ongoing fight. This controversial theme is addressed with subtle imagery in Chrystos text. The imagery of war and chaos that is simultaneously shocking and eye-opening, Chrystos writes:
“These tears are private frightened gestures of woman
Who cannot stand guns & death &how useless
They think our lives
