Deciding that being business owners would make them happier they decided to go into business. The first venture in to bagels did not work out. Upon taking a class from Penn University in ice cream they opened a dip shop. The company carried the owners resolve to live in a more rural culture. The company experienced a lot of growth, rapid, and the owners did not have the business knowledge to control the company strategically nor did they want or like the idea of creating a large business. Ben Cohen wanted a company that created loyalty, motivation, and pride which is what the 5 -1 ratio represented to him. One of the core competencies is the following that Ben & Jerry’s create products that represents its rural values. These need to be nurtured as they are the reason that the company has such continued growth. I fell the company has a strategy; the social mission that they have is a good strategy for the company to have. Key Management: Ben Cohen had very set ideals for this company. It is not simply a matter of experiences, though they play a roll. For example, the recent TV series “Undercover Boss” has fascinated me because the leaders of these companies are apparently not well-known in their own companies that they can be recognized by their employees while undercover. How is it possible that these followers do not know their leaders? These leaders should be acting like leaders, expressing leadership qualities and using leadership skills that would be obvious to anyone under them. But belaying all that, a good leader should be seen, heard, understood and known by ALL of their followers, otherwise who‘s leading whom? Someone might say is TV the place to get leadership advice? There is good advice and bad advice and you can learn from either, if you are paying attention. I also watch “The Apprentice” and “Survivor: ‘Whatever Island’” for the same purpose: to see how people lead and follow under varying conditions. Malone, the division’s de facto COO, had said that upon successful completion of the Silicon 6 study, for which McCaskey was project leader, she would be promoted to group manager. The promotion would mean both a substantial increase in pay and a reprieve from the tedious field work typical of Praxis’ consulting projects. Completing the Silicon 6 project, however, meant a second session with Phil Devon, the one person who could provide her with the information required by Praxis’ client. Now, McCaskey reflected, finishing the project would likely mean following the course of action proposed by Hackert and seconded by Malone to pay Devon off. Both the international market (multi-country operations) and the product (multi-industry operations) dimension of diversification are integrated into the analysis and a switching of regression regimes methodology is employed that accounts for the bi-dimensional nature of the diversification strategy pursued by MNCs. The model identifies four types of diversification regimes. The results suggest that leverage increases with both international and product diversification. It is also found that the combination of both types of diversification leads to lower levels of bankruptcy risk. Although the role of the determinants of MNC capital structure varies with the diversification strategy, there seem to be common determinants. IKEA’s strategy in China is compared to its corporate strategy throughout the rest of the world. Design/methodology/approach – The four P classifications are used as a framework to compare the central marketing strategies of IKEA with marketing strategies used in China. The paper builds on both primary and secondary data. Interviews with senior managers at IKEA are conducted and studies on business and retailing in China are used. Findings – The marketing strategies used by IKEA in China are found to be different from the standardised strategies it uses throughout the rest of the world. Several of the changed strategies are central to the business concept of IKEA. Research limitations/implications – The present paper shows the challenges for a standardised marketing concept and its implications. Originality/value – The paper provides, in the context of the standardisation and adaptation of marketing activities, a more nuanced and up-to-date picture of the strategies used by IKEA compared to previous studies.
