...------------------------------------------------- Famous the world over for his exquisite shoes, follow in the footsteps of Jimmy Choo as he shares his favourite parts of Malaysia - his treasured homeland Last updated 18 March 2010 Although I live in the UK, Malaysia is still my country, and I am passionate about it. In my new role as Tourism Malaysia Ambassador, I hope to persuade many more people to visit – it’s such a spectacular place with so much on offer. I still have lots of family there, and go over about six times a year. The people of Malaysia are very friendly and speak English well. Staff in the resorts and hotels are well trained and really look after visitors with care and attention. Whichever part of the country you visit, there’s so much for holidaymakers to do, both in peninsular Malaysia and in the separate states of Sarawak and Sabah, on the island of Borneo. Apart from its natural beauty and fantastic wildlife such as orang-utans and Sumatran rhinoceros, the country has great activities, from diving and white water rafting, to golf and bird watching. Penang I was born on Penang, so it’s one of my favourite places. Called the Pearl of the Orient, the little island has been one of Malaysia’s top tourist destinations since the 1970s, when backpackers first discovered its beautiful beaches. I can remember riding around on my moped and camping out with friends when I was a teenager. Penang is a fascinating blend of Malay, Indian, Chinese and a bit...

...Like It’s Our Last Day Patty Jo Djennelbaroud English 121 Instructor Asatryan March 25, 2013 Like It’s Our Last Day All too often we live our lives like we will be here forever. We take advantage of the time we are given to spend with our loved ones, and neglect opportunities to show how much we treasure them. Even when someone is old or sick, it’s too easy for us to fool ourselves into thinking that they ‘know’ just how important they are to us and how they impact our lives. I was lucky enough to be taught the value of living each day like it was my last day, and to never take our loved ones for granted, thanks to my niece Hillarie. When I was 14, my sister gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Hillarie Dawn. She had milky-smooth copper skin, was completely bald, and the longest baby I had ever seen. Even her toes and fingers seem to stretch for miles, and she could keep herself entertained for ages just by watching her tiny fragile fingers furling out and in, again and again, like the tail of a peacock opening and closing. She wasn’t the first baby in this generation of my family; she was number five thus far. You could say we were quite well versed in newborn-ology, but she surprised us all with her quiet and easy nature. She rarely cried or fussed, was always happy, and even let us catch sleep for hours at a time. Before the age of 2 she was diagnosed with a heart disorder, a rare form of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy with RCM. It held a bleak outcome for her future;...

...Writing Your Graduate School Application Essay Generally speaking, there are two types of application essays for graduate school: the statement of purpose (SOP) and the personal statement. (Refer to FAQs to find out how the two types are different.) Both types let you convince the admissions committee that you are a good fit for the program and can contribute to the department. Although different graduate schools may ask you to answer different prompts, most ask that you write no more than a two-page application essay. The application essay is difficult to write because you must pitch your candidacy to a few department faculty members who read through hundreds – or sometimes thousands – of other essays. In this handout, you will learn how to show these busy readers that you will contribute meaningfully to the university and their department. 1. Relate your past and present experiences to the future. In their application essays, many applicants make the mistake of underemphasizing the future. But it’s important that you show how your past experiences have informed your present work, and how your present work can be extended to the future or raise new research questions. Admissions committees assess many qualified applicants based on whether their research will reflect positively on the university and their department. Committees will think your past and present work is relevant only if it relates directly to your plans for the future. If you don’t know exactly where your current...

...The name of the lecture that I viewed was Samuel Cohen: Alzheimer's is not normal aging — and we can cure it. Samuel Cohen talked about finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and that funding and awareness is needed to be able to do this. He talked about how Alzheimer’s has been around for over 100 years and that everyone with a brain is at risk for this horrible disease (Cohen, 2015). This speaker chose a topic in something that he felt really cared about so he was able to give the speech effectively. He did not use any notecards to help him with his speech but periodically during his speech to help get his point a crossed and to help him keep his place he used power point slides. He made you want to listen to his speech because you could...

...“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” * John C. Maxwell My leadership philosophy is real simple and straight forward. One value that stands very close to my heart is the one that my Dad has drummed into me: Don’t cheat yourself, you know exactly what you can and can’t do. In order to succeed as a leader, one must know his or her strengths and weakness. Secondly, we have finite amount of time and energy. If we have time to whine and complain about something then we definitely have time and energy to do something about it. In simpler words: Don’t complain, just work harder! Furthermore, look for the best in everyone. If you wait long enough, people will show you their good side, just keep waiting and be patient. But on the other hand, it is a leader’s responsibility to know how long, is long enough. Within the past year and half, I have learned that experience is the most precious thing you can offer someone. So do not be afraid of making mistakes and sharing your experiences. Last but not least, never give up! As Randy Pausch, the author of the book Last Lecture says, “Brick walls are there for a reason. And once you get over then, even if someone practically had to throw you over, it can be helpful to others to tell them how you did it.” And in order to be an excellent leader, I believe these concepts are valuable to have in handy. * Don’t cheat yourself- Seek first to understand and then to be understood. * Don’t complain; just...

...Consumer Behavior Social Power Social Power There have been various studies conducted on the influences groups and individuals can have on someone. This ability, by groups or individuals, to alter the actions of others is called Social Power. As it relates to consumer behavior, the influence associated with social power can have a huge impact on the types of products consumer purchase, the activities completed, and the attributes expressed by the consumer. There are 5 different categories of social power that represent the different was groups or individuals can influence people including referent power, legitimate power, expert power, reward power, and coercive power. These different power bases can exert their influence both intentionally and unintentionally over others. The study of social power is important because the better you understand how groups and individuals affect each other; the better you understand how these influences have shaped our consumer behavior. Referent Power The first, and arguably, most important way of influencing people with social power, is referent power. Referent power is when a consumer likes the qualities of a group or individual and mimics their behavior to better identify with that group or person. Referent power can influence consumers both intentionally and unintentionally. An intentional way of using referent power to influence a consumer would be for a company to employ a sports celebrity to advertise products...

...Why Banning the Use of Cell Phones While Driving Should be Mandatory Nationwide. Cellular phones have served us in many effective ways. They connect people when they are away and need information. They allow us to stay in touch with family and friends. In essence, they keep us communicating. While they are good, they can cause a lot of problems on our roads. Do you believe that using a cell phone while driving causes a driver to be impaired as a driver who is driving under the influence of alcohol? Well, according to research done by psychologists at the University of Utah, “people are as impaired when they drive and talk on a cell phone as they are when they drive intoxicated at a legal blood alcohol limit 0.08 percent, which is the minimum level of an illegal drunken driver in most U.S. states.” Today, more people are being drunken by their cell phones. This impaired driving, according to the psychologists, is also causing a lot of road users to respond slower in many ways than if they were sober. The drivers, they said, take a longer time to hit the brakes, take a slower time to get back to normal speed after breaking and are more capable of being involved in an accident. Can you see the danger in this type of driving? Can you see what could possible happen to pedestrians or other drivers under this type of driving? If as a people we care about our lives as well as the lives of others, then, law makers would enact laws to ban the use of cell phones while driving...

...Mineral quashes deadly bacterial poisons Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh have found a promising new mineral to help those suffering from hemorrhage-inducing infections caused by some food- and waterborne germs. Though the data is still being researched, people are excited for the outcome. The mineral, manganese might soon offer a low-cost treatment that physicians could administer “to every patient that comes into the clinic with a bloody stool,” stated Bryan [whom did not participate in the research.] “The mineral helps detoxify Shiga toxin, which is produced by a host of bacteria, including the type of E. coli that killed scores and sickened more than 3,700 people in Europe last year.” This discovery is tremendous because although antibiotics aids in wiping out top germs causing the infection, taking these drugs are discouraged. Moreover, killing the infectious bugs only hastens the process in which the toxin Shiga is released. Furthermore, leading to the increase of the patient’s risk of kidney failure, stroke and death. The process is as follows; foreign materials entering a cell will get evaluated by an internal compartment called an endosome anything undesirable by the endosome will be transferred to an other compartment, a lysosome. Normally there they would be broken down and raw materials left will be discarded or recycled. Shiga toxin is an exception because it never reaches the lysosome. Through the normal transferring process something goes...

...Few environments feature such a cacophony of decor as the elementary school classroom. Colorful bulletin boards, scientific posters, state maps, and student artwork tend to cover nearly every inch of wall space. Yet a new study on classroom design from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University suggests that all that educational flair may not be all that great for getting kids to learn. The study, carried out over two weeks, examined 24 kindergarten students who were taught six lessons on topics they had not yet learned in school. Half the lessons were taught in a highly decorated classroom environment, with posters and art all over the walls, and the other half were taught in a classroom with no decoration. Image credit: Carnegie Mellon University CMU's researchers found the kids spent more time off-task and were more distracted when the room was brightly decorated, and they tested better on subjects they learned in the sparser classroom compared to the ones they learned in the more visually stimulating environment. Elementary school children typically stay in one room all day, so classroom decorations don't necessarily match the subject matter they're learning at any given time. If they're sitting in front of a U.S. map, they'll be looking at that all day whether the current lesson is on geography or math. This study, though very small, adds to previous research from the same psychologists showing that visual stimulation that's irrelevant to on-going instruction can...

...Was Andrew Carnegie a Hero? When you think of a hero what comes to your mind? Superman? Batman? What about a person who changed history? Andrew Carnegie was a man who was self-made and one the wealthiest people in the 19th century. When the civil war ended one thing started booming which was the American industry and demands for railroads were increasing. They were faster, able to cross almost any terrain and were possible to operate in severe weather. Railroads were built all around the continent, this was not possible by having the help from Andrew. He developed a strategy where manufacturing steel was easier, faster and more productive. He had all the materials to do so; raw materials, ships, railroads for transporting good from one place to another; even have coal fields to fuel the steel furnaces. He was a hero in many different ways. His experiences, providing jobs, and giving back to the community. He was born on November 25th, 1835, in Dunfermline, Scotland. When he went to school at eight, they crammed 150 students in one room. One of the hardest decisions was made when his family and he moved to the US. He had to work to help support his family. He started working at the age of 12. Can you imagine working that young? Well back then it was common. His family needed $7.25 each week just to make ends meet. His first job was at a local textile mill setting and removing bobbins as they filled it with spun yarn. Over the years he worked his way up from being the young...
