Cigar Beetles: Tutorial Could Save your Cigar's Life

When you first take up the cigar hobby, there may come a time when you open your humidor, anticipating a lovely smoke and panic. Something has poked mini-holes in one of your little treasures. Before you yell at your kids – if you've got some – chances are cigar beetles are responsible.

You probably won't see any tobacco beetles, unless they are crawling around inside your humidor. It doesn't mean the revolting creatures aren't wrecking your expensive smokes. You are entitled to be furious, especially if you've started investing in premium brands.

Let's learn about humidor invasion and how to prevent it in the future.

Where do Cigar Beetles come from?

That's a puzzler isn't it? Your …show more content…
Fortunately, this doesn't happen often. Just remember where you find one infested cigar; there will be more, even if the others seem okay. This is why it's critical to inspect your humidor every 2-3 days.

Why Didn't the Manufacturer do something to Control Beetles?

The cigar industry works diligently in attempts to get rid of beetles. They commonly fumigate the tobacco twice: immediately after it is aged and prior to shipping the cigars.

Typically, manufacturers use an aluminum phosphide pellet that releases gas. The tobacco is placed in a sealed room while fumigants are in process. Then, they aerate the room to eliminate any trace poison.

Organic growers use treatments that deprive the beetles of oxygen during fumigation. Also, freezing is an automatic death sentence for the tobacco beetle. Many manufacturers freeze cigars before shipping.

However, some of the smaller companies, especially cottage industries that create cigars at their kitchen table, won't be as concerned with these voracious pests.

As a beginner at the cigar hobby, get proactive and always try to trace where cigars were made before you buy.

Why You Shouldn’t Smoke

...smoke as can be witnessed by their division from the rest of the public into smoker areas. Everyone from the government to hospitals to movie stars, friends, and family claim smoking is a filthy habit one shouldn't start in on, and everyone gives very good reasons why someone shouldn't smoke, and I agree. The biggest reasons not to smoke concerns your health, the health of the people around you, the financial burden of buying cigarettes, cigars, and pipes and tobacco, and the health and beauty of the environment. One of the biggest reasons not to smoke that immediately comes to mind is health-related: "Cigarette smoking kills an estimated 264,000 men and 178,000 women in the United States each year" ("Tobacco"). Smoking has also been known to cause lung cancer, heart disease, and the chronic lung diseases of emphysema, bronchitis, and chronic airways obstruction; all of these "are responsible for the largest number of smoking-related deaths" ("Tobacco"). Something that oftentimes isn't considered when discussing smoking are smoking pipes or cigars—usually people only think about cigarettes—which "increase the risk of dying from cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, and oral cavity"...

Itc Case

...ITC Cigarettes Over the years, ITC has evolved from a single product company to a multi-business corporation. Its businesses are spread over a wide spectrum, ranging from cigarettes and tobacco to hotels, packaging, paper and paperboards and international commodities trading. Each of these businesses is vastly different from the others in its type, the state of its evolution and the basic nature of its activity, all of which influence the choice of the form of governance. The challenge of governance for ITC therefore lies in fashioning a model that addresses the uniqueness of each of its businesses and yet strengthens the unity of purpose of the Company as a whole. Globalization will not only significantly heighten business risks, but will also compel Indian companies to adopt international norms of transparency and good governance. ITC's governance policy recognizes the challenge of this new business reality in India. ITC was incorporated on August 24, 1910 under the name of 'Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited'. Its beginnings were humble. A leased office on Radha Bazar Lane, Kolkata, was the centre of the Company's existence. The Company celebrated its 16th birthday on August 24, 1926, by purchasing the plot of land situated at 37, Chowringhee, (now renamed J.L. Nehru Road) Kolkata, for the sum of Rs 310,000. This decision of the Company was historic in more ways than one. It was to mark the beginning of a long and eventful journey into India's future. The Company's...

...quality of your life. Maybe you don’t notice all the physical effects of smoking immediately, but you surely will be sorry one day. Tobacco and consequential diseases kill 10 lakh persons in Pakistan every year – more than suicidal bombing, road traffic accidents, honour killings and drug abuse combined. Tobacco is responsible for almost 50% of all cancer cases in the country. The second reason why you shouldn’t smoke is because of all the money that you spend on it. Maybe you start smoking only when someone offers you a cigarette, but there will be a day when you will feel the need of a cigarette. By this time, you will pay whatever to smoke, and each time you will smoke more, so you will spend more money. All the money you would spend on cigars could have be spent in something better, don’t you think? Approximately 24% male and 16% female college going students in Karachi are regular smokers and Pakistanis spend Rs. 60 crore on cigarettes daily, stated Professor Javaid Khan, chairman NATC and Head of Pulmonary Diseases at Aga Khan University Hospital. The last reason why you shouldn’t smoke is out of respect for the people around you. When you smoke, you not only...

...consumers or minors, that are not legally able to purchase tobacco products, (Layton, 2010). The second is the ban on favored cigarettes other than menthol, but there is no ban in regard to flavored cigars or blunts. The third and final concern is the marketing company’s responsibility to their contractual obligations with The Exotic Smokes Company. These three concerns are essential to the success of the marketing strategy and plan. The Target Market There is a ban that prohibits the advertising and selling of tobacco products to minors. The Exotic Smokes Company wants to reach a demographic that is perilously close to the ban of advertising to minors. The marketing has to be specific targeting the college age consumer or young business professionals to avoid costly litigation. Ban on Flavored Cigarettes The marketing company must advise the Exotic Smokes Company as to the ban on flavored cigarettes. The marketing company must not advertise a banned tobacco product. With full knowledge that the product is in direct violation and continuing to market the product is unethical and will potentially open the marketing company up to litigation. The marketing company is ethically obligated to discuss the Exotic Smokes options, such as changing the product to a flavored cigar or discontinuing the flavored cigarette production. “a Note on the Cuban Cigar Industry”

...“A Note on the Cuban Cigar Industry” 1. Threats of new entrants: Product differentiation is major player in the market of Cuban Cigars, with certain brands being linked to prestige and honor. Also, restrictions from the world make it difficult for new entrants, because of trade embargos put in place by a majority of the most powerful countries in the world, including the United States. Power of suppliers: Cigar industry is dominated by two major suppliers, Altadis and Swedish Match, which control the distribution of Havana cigars and Cuban branded names, with Altadis being the largest cigar company in the world. Power of buyers: Buyers are willing to pay premium price for quality cigars, therefore, the power of the buyer is very minimal, as cigar enthusiast have increased worldwide. Threats of substitutes: The threat of substitutes is higher, where the actual tobacco seed has been farmed in locations outside of Cuba, including the United States, Dominican Republic, and Honduras. As noted in the Case, 250 million cigars were exported to the United States from the Dominican Republic. Competitive Rivalry: Rivalry in the Cuban cigar industry is extremely high, where the industry growth has tapered off because of intense competition. Projections were high in the nineties for Cuban Cigar imports; however, with the fear of loss in quality and exclusivity of the cigars, the projections were lessened. Even though there has been a steady increase in exports, it has...

Effects of Taxation on Cigarette Smoking

...Effects of Taxation on Cigarette Smoking In economics the demand elasticity refers to the sensitivity of the quantity demand for a product to the changes in price. This relationship correlates to the basic law of demand which states that if the price of a product or good increase, then the consumer demand would fall and decrease because of the change. However not all products follow this fundamental theory. In fact products that are considered addictive substances, such as tobacco and cigarettes can be the exception to this basic law because we must take into account not just the pricing but other factors such as time, usage, limitations, and restrictions. Imposing higher taxes on cigarettes will have a mix effect as to who the price increase affects. As noted in the Chaloupka article, “The effects of prices and tobacco”, paying higher taxes on cigarettes as well as placing stronger controls as to who is able to purchase them will lead to a reduction in the consumption of cigarette smoking. The article is supported by studies done in the early eighties and late ninnies, confirming the reduction is towards both adults and youths alike. However price sensitivity is significant in its responsiveness between youths and young adults than compared to adults; up to three times more sensitive. Some reasons as to why this may be, is due to the strict regulations and laws set by states and local governments that enforce and control the purchase of tobacco products to the consumer...

Smoking

...THE RISE OF CIGARS AND CIGAR-SMOKING HARMS Despite increases in cigar smoking, especially among youth, cigars are often overlooked by legislators and other policymakers who mistakenly believe that cigars are “not that harmful” compared to cigarettes and deserve special treatment. But cigars are addictive and deadly – causing lung cancer, other cancers, heart attacks and more – and they are often marketed in a wide variety of kid-friendly flavors. Cigar smokers also produce more secondhand smoke than cigarette smokers, and secondhand cigar smoke is often even more harmful and deadly than secondhand cigarette smoke. Health Harms to Users from Cigar Smoking Like cigarettes, cigars are smoked and contain the same toxic and carcinogenic compounds. 1 While many believe that cigars are safer than cigarettes because cigar smoke is not inhaled, studies have shown that cigar smokers actually do inhale – even when smoking large premium cigars – thereby absorbing smoke into their lungs and bloodstream, and depositing cigarette smoke particles in their lungs and even in their stomachs and digestive tract. Because large cigars do not have filters, smokers are exposed to more tobacco smoke and, especially, more toxins in the smoke. 2 Moreover, many youth and other smokers are now consuming cigars, especially smaller ones, just like cigarettes, with full inhalation. Accordingly, smoking cigars causes the same kinds of serious health consequences and premature death as cigarette smoking. For...

...FACT SHEET Regulations Restricting the Sale, Distribution, and Marketing of Cigarettes, Cigarette Tobacco, and Smokeless Tobacco cientists have proven the link between the advertising and promotion of tobacco products and the use of these products by teens. To protect youth from becoming addicted to tobacco products and suffering the deadly effects of tobacco, the FDA Center for Tobacco Products issued a rule limiting the sale, distribution, and marketing of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. Every day in the United States, nearly 3,300 youth under age 18 smoke their first cigarette, and more than 700 become daily cigarette smokers. Many of these youth will become addicted before they are old enough to understand the risks and will die too young of tobacco-related diseases. This is an avoidable personal tragedy for these youth and their families. It is also a preventable public health disaster for our country. The rule, authorized by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, bans the sale, distribution, and marketing of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to kids under age 18. The rule became effective on June 22, 2010. Just like the rule that bans certain flavored cigarettes, these legal requirements help prevent our kids from becoming the next generation of Americans to die early from tobacco-related diseases. Federal Requirements: Sale and Distribution • Prohibits the sale of cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, and smokeless tobacco to people younger than 18. • Prohibits...
