APPLICATION AND TECHNOLOGY ARCHITECTURES 2
Abstract
After reading about Reliable Pharmaceutical Service (RPS) at the end of Chapter 1, this paper
will Create an application architecture plan for RPS to follow for the next five years and
additionally create a graphic technology architecture plan.
Additionally, we will write a page narrative with graphic depictions describing the plan and
including, an overview of the application architecture, an overview of the technology
architecture, and ideas for how the architectures will evolve over the next five years.
APPLICATION AND TECHNOLOGY ARCHITECTURES 3
Reliable Pharmaceutical Service (RPS) is having some serious issues internally with its
staff and also stiff competition from other drug stores (i.e., Walgreens, CVS, etc.). As part of the
RPS IT Team, it is necessary for us to develop an application architecture plan so that we can
keep the company alive. Without it, management may be forced to file for bankruptcy.
A necessary feature of application architecture is its flexibility to adapt itself to
constantly and rapidly changing environmental conditions such as: changes in processes and
changes in IS/IT. For Reliable Pharmaceuticals to progress over the next five years with
revenues and profits desired, the company will need to discuss future areas. There are several
areas included in the following application architecture starting with development, production,
planning, distribution, and human resource.
RPS is a privately held company incorporated in 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Since its inception, Reliable has grown to a pharmacy that accepts orders for patients in client
facilities and delivers them securely every 12 hours. Now with services to Santa Fe, Las Cruces
and Gallup deliveries are at all time high. With challenges Reliable is facing, they will need to
re-evaluate their software and database system. Switching to a system that will service all areas
such as patient insurance information, HIPPA guidelines, payment method, delivery choice and
other areas depending on client, Reliable can catapult ahead of any reigning pharmaceutical
company and not cut any staff.

Reliable is on the right track with streamlining operations and expansion to neighboring
states but must have new system fully operational with no issues before doing so. Offering other
means of delivery will entice clients to stick with Reliable and suggest them to friends and
family. Word of mouth is a strong advertisement and customer loyalty plans should be
researched. Smartphone applications along with fully functional user friendly web site will be
optimal service for those clients in business world of technology.
All the restructuring of Reliable system must be orchestrated by top level management
along with cross organizational training. With new system reorganization, operating procedures,
and other areas, Reliable will be the pharmaceutical business to watch and learn from for a
striving successful company that turned its system around and maintained government policies
dealing with HIPPA and Pharmaceutical guidelines.

Reliable Pharmaceuticals Application Architecture Plan
HIPAA is an unusual law in that it makes a lot of recommendations (addressable items)
and a few assertions (required items) and in the end, it is up to each organization to determine
what they need to do to be compliant. This creates flexibility and also a great deal of uncertainty.
To be HIPAA-compliant, a web site must at a minimum ensure that all protected information:

This would include, at a minimum, the following recommendations:
* Is always encrypted as it is transmitted over the Internet * Is not lost, i.e. should be backed up and can be recovered * Is only accessible by authorized personnel * Is not tampered with or altered * Should be encrypted if it is being stored or archived * Can be permanently disposed of when no longer needed
