...| Muscatine, IA | Local Politics | | | 2/24/2013 | I chose to investigate Muscatine, Iowa. Muscatine has a population of 22,886 residents and it is slowly growing. The Census Bureau found that in 2010 Muscatine has grown .83%. (WMG, 2010) Greg Mandsager describes Muscatine as a Municipality, or a city to which people travel to for work or leisure. (Tiesman, 2009) It is a great community to be a part of and a rather simple form of government. The demographics have primarily stayed the same for the past 50 years and it hasn’t been impacted by migration. Nothing has come to Muscatine to attract a specific group of people or change the generic makeup of the city. Seven percent of Muscatine’s residence was foreign born and Caucasians make up 90% of the population as of 2010. As mentioned earlier The City Administrator thinks of Muscatine as a municipality that people travel to for work and leisure. I would say that is true, Muscatine is a rural community within driving distance to Iowa City and Davenport, IA. As a growing city of its own, Muscatine is beginning to have more and more attractions. With a new movie theatre recently built on the bypass of highway 61 and other local businesses growing and coming to the community Muscatine is on its way to be quite the catch. The location is perfect; sitting right on the Mississippi River it easily attracts people when the weather is nice. Although, the population is only slowly growing, the town itself is evolving...

...Kilgore City Council Meeting The City of Kilgore became a “Home Rule” city in 1960, thus they have the right to pass any law or ordinance they deem necessary as long as it complies with the Texas constitution. Kilgore is considered a council-manager form of government, which is a form of government where an elected council is vested with the power to control laws and ordinances, but appoints a city manager to run the city's everyday activities. In the case of the City of Kilgore Josh Selleck holds this position. Among the many duties of the City Council the enactment of local legislation, the adoption of budgets, the determination of policies, and the appointment of the city manager are included. The City Council is the governing body of the City and is responsible for the policy direction as opposed to the City Manager who is responsible for the administration portion. The City Council holds meetings during which the public can express their concern about a multitude of issues along with the discussion and approval of proposed ordinances....

...the United States. Unfortunately, as has happened with previous cities, these efforts have been met with some opposition. Your company has only “38 of your 3,000” [1] stores located in urban areas and in order to successfully enter these, you will need a plan for galvanizing the necessary support from local government leaders as well as the community. You will then need to follow through on your promise and strengthen the communities that you serve. Your critics continue to portray Wal-Mart as an inconsiderate monopoly that comes in to towns and wipes out their small retailers. Activists and union leaders claim your low pay drives down wages across the county. The United Food and Commercial Workers are concerned that Chicago grocery stores will suffer due to your lower grocery prices. The Chicago Workers’ Rights Board argues that by “squeezing more sales out of each man hour” [1] Wal-Mart will actually cost the city jobs. You will need to show that you can positively impact cities by being compassionate toward the concerns of your potential customers and employees. It is likely that if Wal-Mart can open these stores, the company will eventually gain public support with time as low prices and new local jobs inspire customer loyalty. However, the only way to make this happen is to obtain the required 26 votes from the 50-member city council before they vote on the issue. This will require lobbying members of council, specifically those who are the most relevant based on their district’s...

...The 1963 historic March on Washington and the subsequent passing of some sweeping civil rights laws spurred African-Americans who had grown angry and frustrated over the slow rate of their social and economic progress. They were now finally prepared to realize their potential force in order to exercise a decisive measure of political control over their own lives. Consequently, several African-American mayors of major cities, especially in the industrial North, were elected opening the floodgates of other African-American elected officials throughout the nation, including city council-members, aldermen, school board members, governors and presidents. After winning the primary and the general election with 95 percent of the African-American vote (At the same time, Carl Stokes was elected mayor of Cleveland, Ohio), Richard G. Hatcher became the first African-American mayor of Gary, Indiana, and the first in the state of Indiana. He was elected in November 1967 and inaugurated in January 1968. Hatcher served an unprecedented five terms and as one of the beneficiaries of the Civil Rights Movement, he set the tone and was used as the standard by which many African-American mayors, that came after him, throughout the nation, were evaluated or criticized. Hatcher broke the racial glass ceiling for a host of African-American mayors who followed him. In the light of this watershed moment, it is the purpose of this paper to analyze how Richard Gordon Hatcher became the first African-American...

...design plan. I have concentrated to this request carefully. As you probably know, every project is custom designed and involves a variety of sub-contractors and therefore we usually do not change the design after a date specified in the contract. Any changes that we have to be made after the deadline are not easy. Before we make any decisions, we contacted with the design engineer about this issue if we could work on your request. Apparently, in that particular location is a zoning restriction on this kind of venting. Even though this restriction is not well enforced, changing location of a venting apparatus is related to the visual profile of the building. Also, the company lawyer has already told us, that EBG was currently working with city council members to have some environmentally-friendly but controversial legislation passed, and this could impact on our company badly. Therefore, I’m truly sorry for any inconvenience that may cause you. We always want to provide the highest quality service to you. Please let me know if there is anything we can do to make the better this project. Thank you, we appreciate your business and plan to keep on meeting your changing needs as your business grow.
