Levittown: Visionary Urban Design or Just Urban Sprawl?

...Levittown: Visionary Urban Design or just Urban Sprawl? Gail A Bigelow April 23, 2006 University of Central Florida Levittown: Visionary Urban Design or just Urban Sprawl? Levittown isn’t a visionary product of high design, there weren’t any major architects to give it pizzazz yet it endures today, by sheer force of will, to be the working stiff’s utopia, his escape from the inner city, the place where he could get away from the noise and dust of the city, a place that was affordable, where he could be king of his own single-family detached castle, he could enhance his quality of life and be just far enough away, but not too far… After World War II the returning veterans demands for housing became more insatiable, it was a right, given what they had been through. Returning veterans were living in attics, basements and Quonset huts or sharing housing with others in the same boat. The young men and women were ready to get back to a normal life – get married and have families and that meant finding a place of their own. The houses were their reward. A single-family house in the suburbs, fully equipped with the best appliances, became a patriotic mission. Many were looking for something new and different than what they had grown up with, they wanted to get out of the inner cities. They knew they’d have to work in those cities, but they didn’t have to live there or raise a family there. During the...

...responsible. Each individual team member has selected a community in which he or she is familiar with for the use of defining social responsibility in each community. These communities include Champaign, Truth or Consequences, Mountain View Crossing, Lyons, and Lubbock. By reviewing the profiles of each community, the team can determine both their differences and similarities as well as selecting the community that has the most effective social responsibility. Differences and Similarities Because every community is different, each has a distinct quality that defines its character. One difference between the communities presented by this team is through their financial incomes that range anywhere from average to high. Age also can be seen as a difference between these communities as these ages range between the mid-twenties to mid-forties. Champaign is a town in Illinois home to the University of Illinois. The university houses half of the countries Internet service. Lubbock is a town in Texas that serves as the home for innovation and renewable energy sources. Although differences are apparent within communities, similarities are present as well. Truth or Consequences and Mountain View Crossing both show signs of respect. Even though there may have been no mention of respect within the individual reports, there is no question that respect is not present. Communities implement local festivities along with resident appreciation days. The purpose behind these gatherings is so residents...

...of a Bronze Age fortified city, which was part of the Cemetery H culture and the Indus Valley Civilization, centered in Sindh and the Punjab.[1] The city is believed to have had as many as 23,500 residents and occupied over 100 hectares (250 acres) at its greatest extent during the Mature Harappan phase (2600–1900 BC), which is considered large for its time.[2][3] Per archaeological convention of naming a previously unknown civilization by its first excavated site, the Indus Valley Civilization is also called the Harappan Civilization. The ancient city of Harappa was heavily damaged under the British rule, when bricks from the ruins were used as track ballast in the making of the Lahore-Multan Railroad. In 2005, a controversial amusement park scheme at the site was abandoned when builders unearthed many archaeological artifacts during the early stages of construction work. A plea from the prominent Pakistani archaeologist Ahmad Hasan Dani to the Ministry of Culture resulted in a restoration of the site. The Indus Valley Civilization (also known as the Harappan culture) has its earliest roots in cultures...

Globalization Through the Lens of the Walt Disney Company

Using a single case study (for example select one of these: transnational corporations – Microsoft, McDonald’s, cultural products – film, I-pods, international financial institutions and policies – World Bank, Structural Adjustment Policies) indicate what reasons might there be for supporting and rejecting the idea of globalization as ‘Westernization’, Americanization’, and/or ‘McDonaldization’? Which arguments are more persuasive and why? Name: Amy Christofferson Student #: C05694091 Course: INS201 Due: Tuesday, November 23, 2010 "Unfortunately, all this success creates the ever-greater demand for more success." Quotes Bob Iger, The Walt Disney Company’s CEO since the death of Bill Isner in 2005. He speaks of Disney’s constant growth in economic and societal terms. Iger has focused the company’s growth on the different franchises, such as the Jonas Brothers, and on acquiring Pixar Films. Other than its branching out into other age groups, the success in the box office, along with online games and products based on both, Disney also owns many other successful businesses. Among these are ABC and ESPN as well as blossoming local Disney movies, shows and products in many different countries. Iger’s executive decisions have brought much success to Disney and have further added to the global impact of Disney and failure does not seem to be anywhere in sight. Theme Parks

...Themes, Entertainment ________________________________________ The theme park, as an experience design, differs from amusement parks in the critical design intent of its architects. Theme landscapes are developed to distill a glimpse of world /out of this world locations, not unlike a world's fair, at a single location. These entertainment complexes are familiar vacation territories for generations of the world's travel public, as theme parks are deliberately designed to be internationally-focused attractants. The successful dynamism of these landscapes designed for appeal and dependable itinerary offer assurances of what can be expected, with safety and value for the expense of time and money. Generally, themed landscapes perpetuate and promote folk history and cultural traditions, as these are exploited, yet celebrated, simultaneously. Perception of space in the themed environment, without apologies, is inauthentic, but never-the-less successful, and delightful moments for the viewer. Intentionally, architecture is manipulated in order to impart the necessary factors which will aid in promoting happiness by use of ironic realism. Despite pretentions, everyone enjoys themed experiences at some level. Ambivalent designers are not undermined by the pristine and ineffectual notions the design profession propagates on what characterizes good design. Rather, the successful destination architect gives social value and art to underappreciated human elements in architecture. Human...

We argue that this large research literature can be best organized and understood from a multilevel perspective. We identify three levels of analysis of prosocial behavior: (a) the “meso” level—the study of helper-recipient dyads in the context of a specific situation; (b) the micro level—the study of the origins of prosocial tendencies and the sources of variation in these tendencies; and (c) the macro level—the study of prosocial actions that occur within the context of groups and large organizations. We present research at each level and discuss similarities and differences across levels. Finally, we consider ways in which theory and research at these three levels of analysis...

...The Benefits of Playing Video Games Isabela Granic, Adam Lobel, and Rutger C. M. E. Engels Radboud University Nijmegen Video games are a ubiquitous part of almost all children’s and adolescents’ lives, with 97% playing for at least one hour per day in the United States. The vast majority of research by psychologists on the effects of “gaming” has been on its negative impact: the potential harm related to violence, addiction, and depression. We recognize the value of that research; however, we argue that a more balanced perspective is needed, one that considers not only the possible negative effects but also the benefits of playing these games. Considering these potential benefits is important, in part, because the nature of these games has changed dramatically in the last decade, becoming increasingly complex, diverse, realistic, and social in nature. A small but significant body of research has begun to emerge, mostly in the last five years, documenting these benefits. In this article, we summarize the research on the positive effects of playing video games, focusing on four main domains: cognitive, motivational, emotional, and social. By integrating insights from developmental, positive, and social psychology, as well as media psychology, we propose some candidate mechanisms by which playing video games may foster real-world psychosocial benefits. Our aim is to provide strong enough evidence and a theoretical rationale to inspire new programs of research on the largely unexplored...

The Breadth Component studies societal and cultural development in terms of evolutionary, cyclical, and fundamentalist theories and demonstrates why it is important to looking beyond the popularly accepted knowledge about social development represented by economic and conflict theory. This approach provides a more robust generalization that more adequately describes social advancement, and concludes that classical researchers did not consider leadership as a social segment to be studied, that influences societal and cultural development. Leadership understanding of societal and cultural development is critical for enabling them to lead positive social change. ABSTRACT Depth The Depth section compares modern research in societal and cultural development to the theories of classical researchers in order to further develop the findings of the classical study, and to determine if leadership...
