1. How did your family background contribute to making you who you became? A: Well when I was a young boy my father passed away, and I didn’t get along with my stepfather. My stepfather later died, so my mother sold our farm, and we moved away. My Grandfather fought in the revolutionary war. Yes my childhood wasn’t the best, but it sure helped my toughen up to become a good leader.

2. What progressive achievement did you most contribute to?

A: I fought for rights for many things, but some main ones would have to be giving citizens more control over their government, Women's suffrage. (We tried to give women the right to vote.) Another big one was establishing Minimum wage and direct elections for senators.

In 1917 Congress passed a bill called the espionage act. The bill said that people can’t speak bad about the war, and that was not right. People were jailed for criticizing the war. I started to get a lot of hate, because I opposed the war. People later apologized to me, because they were wrong and they started to respect me because I stood up for people’s civil rights.

6. How did you spread the progressive idea nationally?

A: I used two techniques, one was a magazine called La Follette’s magazine. This helped me promote the cause and helped promote the La Follette name. The magazine still exists today, and is known as the progressive. I also loved to speak, I would speak anywhere in the nation that I needed to.

Were you for or against fighting wars?

A: I was against the idea of wars, I even voted for Woodrow Wilson because he said he would keep the United States out of wars. Woodrow Wilson Later asked congress to declare war on Germany, I was one of only 6 people to opposite it. I was concerned for a good reason, I didn't want tons of people losing loved ones in a brutal war.
