...I interviewed correctional officer Brian Sanchez from City Of New York Police Department 67 precinct. He began his career in the 67th precinct as a patrolman in 1989. In 1994, Brian was promoted to chief of police. Brian has his bachelors of science in criminal justice from John Jay College for Criminal Justice (University) and a masters of science in forensics from the same school. Since his time working as police officer, he also did numerous of volunteer work and some classroom instructions. In 2003, Brian later switched his mindset and became a correctional officer. As much as he loved being a patrolman and working as a police officer, Brian said he couldn't hide his passion to help inmates. Growing up he was also told to be a policeman because his mother wanted him to follow in his father’s footsteps. He didn’t choose the job because he wanted to please his mom; he did it because it’s what’s inside him to do. He's been working as a correctional officer for approximately eight years and says that he loves his job and he never gets stressed a day in his life. His passion didn’t come easy, but it came with hard work. He had to go through series of classes and training. There were days when he felt defeated but he kept going. He now uses what he was thought as well as his knowledge to help others make a better change for their lives. I was surprised at the smiles he had during the interview. I have never seen someone so profoundly happy about his or her career. It's like the...

...Corrections Jesus F. Mercado Jr. CJ100 Intro to Criminal Justice April 18, 2013 Introduction Freedom is something you can gain or loose with a blink of an eye, it’s up to you what path you decide to take. In any given point that moment when you gave your significant other or your children their goodnight kiss would not occur because you would not be there for it to happen. Is just a matter of thinking before you act in doing something foolish and making time behind bars as a result. Life Behind Bars Inmates refer to jail as still being on the “streets” due to the fact that in jail they still have enemy gangs and in any point they can get jumped and for that matter they have to watch their backs. Correction officers as well have to be on their toes, never letting their guard down as in any moment inmates can beat them to dead or even get full of inmates feces. Many correction officers won’t even make it through their first day due to the violence and aggressiveness of the inmates, and realize they weren’t made for the job. Another thing that people don’t often talk about that happens all the time behind prison would be rape to other male inmates. Rape is usually the result of the lake of females and the need of sexual intercourse. Visiting hours on inmates are very strict. For general population they may only get fifteen minutes, four days a week, to visit inmates. Most of the inmates won’t even get a visit for a long period of time. Almost half of a prison is controlled...

...The Life of a US Custom Agent Luis Rey Intro to Criminal Justice CJ100 Jorge Martinez The United States of America is neighbored by two countries— Canada and Mexico. There are agencies that protect our borders from crime, agricultural diseases, and any other illegal activity. Customs and Border Protection, ICE, ICE-HSI, and various other departments handle these cases. It may seem to some that these agents don’t get to do as much as other law enforcement agencies. The truth is people don’t know custom agents are an integral part of our day to day lives as U.S. citizens. For this reason, I had the pleasure to interview agent John Smith, a CBP agent stationed in El Paso, Texas. Smith has been an agent for roughly 6 years now, and while Smith isn’t a servant of the El Paso Police Department, he said that as an agent, he still has to follow criminal laws. Every individual is different. Therefore, we have to follow proper procedures and laws. He also added that using such laws allows them to maintain order, such as avoiding terrorism, contraband, illegal immigrants, documents, drugs, and gangs. Being an agent also means that sometimes, they too get to catch a suspect trying to re-enter the U.S., or trying to leave the country. When asked if he had ever had to deal with a violent crime such as rape, murder, robbery, or an aggravated assault, Smith said “he once caught someone with a record”. Smith said “I scanned the suspect’s I...

...Eight Skills of the Effective CJ Student/CJ100-01 Interview Project Criminal Justice Professional Interview I chose to interview Deputy Sheriff Michelle M. Willcuts. As a second choice, I chose Deputy Kristal Minor. Both Deputies are full time sworn law enforcement officers from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s office in Yorktown, Virginia. The reason why I selected Deputy Willcuts for my interview is because she was born in another country, and as me, English is her second language.
