The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is the largest municipal police force in the United States. Their jurisdiction covers all five boroughs of the city of New York. The NYPD is composed of around 40,000 officers. "From 1994 through 2002, the sworn officer complement of the NYPD had increased by approximately 12,000 police officers from the original 32,000." (Albrecht, 2011) Because of the size of the department it is compiled of many divisions and many different services that can include air support, bomb disposal, narcotics, traffic, among many more. The leadership of the department is quite vast; at the top is the commissioner, a civilian administrator appointed by the mayor. Right beneath him, the Chief of Department, the top uniformed officer. The department is divided into 10 bureaus, which only six are enforcement bureaus. Their job is to enforce and uphold all state laws, as well as the Constitution.
