...The Principal Objectives of Punishment Esther Sanchez CJ 230 09-20-14 Steve Nance Abstract These writing analysis will cover the state and federal objectives of punishment. It will also cover the state and federal corrections systems. And it would cover the determinate and indeterminate sentencing. It would also cover the model that I feel it was more appropriate and will have some examples. Principal objectives of punishment within the U.S. corrections system: Everyday many people attend court because of some criminal act they did. Everyday judges have to review all cases before deciding any sentence. The punishment of a felony is incarceration of a year or more. Misdemeanors are a little shorter, it can be incarceration of a year a less. For repetitive offenders they have something called three strikes law. The judges have many sentencing categories from where to choose. They have economic sanction where the individuals pay a fine or do community service to pay for the crime they committed. There is probation where they are let out to society but are supervised 24/7, which is what most of the judges give to first time offenders. There is also intermediate sanctions that are either imprisonment or probation, it might depend on the crime or the judge. Short term confinement which is a year or less in jail and then there is imprisonment which is a year or more...

In this chapter, we turn our attention to the third member of the courtroom work group, the judge. We will learn what judges do and how they become judges. Then, we will look at judges’ discretion and how it affects their relationships with others. INTRODUCTION Judges are by far the most easily recognized member of the courtroom work group, both by their conspicuous robes and by their prominent position in the courtroom. They are also the subject of many stereotypes because the public wants to believe that judges combine patience, wisdom, and compassion to arrive at fair decisions, while they eschew the character flaws that sometimes form the basis of decisions by others, including prejudice, intolerance, favoritism, and hostility. Unfortunately, judges are human and their decisions occasionally reflect such a reality. One West Virginia judge, for example, became so enraged at a defendant who began cursing at him in court that he jumped down from his bench, tore off his judicial robe, and bit the tip off the defendant’s nose (Smith, 1998). He served five days in jail on state assault...

...Rehabilitation in prison is any program that makes people better or reduces criminal behavior (Foster, 2006). It can also include one religion, which is the biggest program in our prison today. Number two is recreation such as sports and groups. Number three would be arts and craft where artistic expressions are stressed (Foster, 2006). Number four is service groups which includes fund raisers and juvenile group homes (Foster, 2006). Number five would be self-help groups such as alcohol anonymous and narcotic anonymous (Foster, 2006). Number six would be prison work assignments which are inside jobs assigned to inmates (Foster, 2006). Number seven visitation which is by family members and non-family visits (Foster, 2006). In my opinion prisoner, rehabilitation is a method that helps the inmate processes their criminal activities trying to help them focus on things that will help them to be able to lead a normal life outside of prison; basically I feel it give the inmate some hope. Prisoner rehabilitation started in the era of the 1950s through the 1970s. Rehabilitation was never the only reason for imprisonment (Foster, 2006). There was no precise definition or mission statements available during that time (Foster, 2006). Instead, it was defined in an unclear method when being described by prison officials (Foster, 2006). Scientific penology played a key role in defining and conducting structured thoughts and scientific studies that were later utilized through rehabilitation...

...Future of Policing CJS/210 There are many trends that are currently affecting policing in today’s society. Police officers have to deal with different issues that come their way like human trafficking, drug trafficking, and many of gangs. The many trends that police are dealing with are getting worst by the minute. Trends that are currently affecting policing are human trafficking, gangs, illegal migrations and drug trafficking. Sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and unknown labor all fall under human trafficking. Federally funded human trafficking task forces opened a total of 2,515 suspected incidents of human trafficking for investigation between January 1, 2008, and June 30, 2010 (BJS, 2011). Out of the 2,515 of human trafficking sex trafficking had the most incident totaling at 2,065. Sex trafficking has become a trend that the police cannot stop. There are so many people out there kidnapping runaway victim to make money. They are having young runaway victim sell their body for their personal gain. In the street police officer like to call them pimps or madams. Pimp is a man who solicits for a prostitute or brothel and lives off the earnings. Madam is a woman who runs a brothel. Labor trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which individuals perform labor or services through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. Labor trafficking includes situations of debt bondage, forced labor, and involuntary child labor. 350 were labor trafficking case out of the 2,515. Unknown...

...CJS 230 Week 8 Assignment 4 Rehabilitation paper Professor Anthony Nici April 21, 2013 Rehabilitation is a word that is used often within the corrections, in the prison setting. It is an attempt to change an individual attitude and behavior. There are programs that are to prevent habitual offenders, help a criminal get to their normal state of mind and not to be punishing for their action that may cause the criminal to change and become an outstanding citizen that follows the rules instead of the individual getting out and committing another crime. Throughout the years there has been many processes created to form rehabilitation process of criminal justice. The process has helped many offenders by allowing him/her to return within their community as a changed individual. Rehabilitation is a specific program that is applied within a prison setting to bring the end of a criminal behavior called desistance, the meaning to cease and stop. It is supposed to be a formula of, prisoner classification X appropriate programming X positive participation= probability of desistance. An inmate getting into the right program would keep them long enough in order to complete the program successfully, once the program has been completed then the inmate can be put in the community so that their behavior would be tested as a non-criminal behavior. There are some facilities that offer rehab, religion, and anger management (Foster, 2006). In the twentieths century it was believed that prison...

...DQ1-CJS/230 Before the 20th century various punishments were exercised that derived from different institutes and philosophies. In the eastern state, John Haviland was famous for his Eastern State Penitentiary’s design. The concept of intimidation and horror were portrayed by the thirty-foot-high wall that separated inmates from the outside world. Each prisoner was held in a complete solitary confinement. Prisoners did not have any contact with other convicts, and guards were not allowed to communicate with prisoners. They were required to work while in their cell. They were also allowed to read the bible, but no other entertainment such as, letters, or magazines were permitted. In contrast, the western New York prisons, Auburn and Sing Sing, did not believe in solitary confinement unless for punishment or control. Unlike the eastern state penitentiary, inmates in the western prisons spend the majority of their times in the company of other inmates. However, no prisoner was allowed to speak to another prisoner. This rule of silence is one of the most important restrictions in the Auburn prisons. In Fact, Elam Lynds, warden of Auburn prison, believed “that convicts were cowards and dogs and ought to be treated accordingly” (Foster, 2005, p. 28). In an effort to cause humiliation, He also described inmates as a giant caterpillar with their stripped uniforms walking in silence while placing one hand on the shoulder of the men in front of them. Guards were instructed to use...

...State and Federal Prison System Paper Student: Norman Staub Course: CJS/230 Introduction to Corrections Date: 8/31/2013 Instructor: Dr. Kim Henagan State and Federal Prison System Paper Example of a State Prison System: An example of a state prison system would be the State Correctional Facility of Pittsburgh, historically referred to as West Penitentiary, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This facility was established in 1826. Typical housing is low and medium security inmates. The facility was remodeled in 2005, to accommodate modern technology, and growing prisoner population. (Pittsburgh Post Gazette, 2011) Explaining the Growth of State Prisons: Truthfully I don’t believe that I alone can explain the growth in population of state prisons. I believe there are a number of reasons involved. The one reason is I truly see a growth is the economy. The people that are less fortunate, or even middle class citizens are desperate and strapped for money more often. When crime seems easy to commit people are more adept to attempt without getting caught. Crimes like insurance fraud, welfare fraud, SSI income fraud are done everyday. It also doesn't help that some internet sites provide information on the successful completion of a few of the crimes listed without getting caught. Opinionated way U.S. Corrections Professionals Solve the Problem of Exponential Growth in State Prison Systems: Exponential growth in the United States state prison system is a recurring...

...Jeep, people would not continue to purchase them. Jeeps have been the backbone of America since they were first made. Jeeps have evolved in so many ways from the past to the present and are continuing to evolve into the future. The Cj’s series started back in the 40s, but the one Jeep covered in this paper will be the Cj-7. The Cj-7 came about in 1976 and roughly 379,000 were produced. This was the start of the Jeep that the public could actually use because it had better drivability and more space. The Cj-7 was just like the Cj-5 except the Cj-7 was extended to give more space. The drivability was improved by the addition of anti-swat bars. Another addition to the Cj-7 was a steering stabilizer allowing the Jeep to have a less probability to go into the death wobble. The death wobble is where the front tires whip back and forth making the driver lose control. Another option was the Quadra-Trac, which was an automatic four-wheel drive system. With this type of four-wheel drive system, it allowed for an automatic transmission. This was another way the Cj-7 was made to be more of a civilian vehicle. There were many different types of packages that the Cj-7 came in. The 3 packages were the Renegade, Laredo, and Golden Eagle. The packages included different options including chrome packages, different four-wheel drive systems, and different engines. There were even options of locking differentials and a winch. The engines offered was the 232 inline six and the 304 V8...

...Marie Foraker Best Vehicle for surviving a zombie crisis Jeanette Burghardt September 21, 2012 The Jeep Wrangler is the best vehicle for surviving a zombie attack because the Wrangler can go off road and the vehicle is small. The Jeep Wrangler is easy for zombie swerving and getting around cars on the roads. The Jeep Wrangler is also cheap, fun to drive and go-anywhere capability. This vehicle would be the perfect car for a zombie crisis. The Jeep Wrangler is the best car because this vehicle can go off road. Which means that this car can go through forest, rocks, snow mountains, mud and fields. Having this advantage makes it easy so to zombie swerving on the roads. The jeep Wrangler can go 70 to 75 miles per hour on the road but the disadvantage to this vehicle is taking this car off the road can only do a speed of 40 to 45 miles per hour. This car can seat about 5 people so means if there are any survivors I can take them. The Wrangler can be custom built. People can buy front-end bars to go cross the front, make the ground clearance higher and bigger tires for ground clearance. ...Well here is the story of a few jeeps... In the short time between school, homework, and Target, my free time is most enjoyed off-road in my Jeep. Chandler, Clayton, and the bass pond will keep me occupied for years to come. As long as I have a Jeep I will continue my quest to explore more trails such as The Rubicon, or Moab. The first Jeep I purchased was a 1986 Cherokee Laredo. At the time the four-wheel drive didn’t work and I didn’t care much. Weeks later I could be found cutting through the occasional field or going through a little mud. I soon learned the need for four wheel drive after a few scary situations last summer. It was about 1 A.M. and I was driving in a ditch with slippery grass from morning dew. In the ditch there was a tall grassy hill that I was thinking about driving up. With a little encouragement from my friend, I charged up the hill and as I reached the crest, my tires started slipping, as did obscenities. We slowly descended backwards down the hill, because the brakes weren’t doing their job. The pace picked up, and fear and uncertainty were riding shotgun as we turned 90 degrees on the hill. I thought a roll was inevitable as we were sliding sideways, so I hit the throttle and we slid around and then the Jeep were facing the bottom of the hill. A few weeks later I got the four wheel drive working, and since then I’ve put my passengers through more fear and fun. Ignorance and adrenalin had got me high centered in the cold raining boonies, up to my...

...Hick Day A slight drizzle was falling from the sky as my huge knobby tires slingshot baseball size chunks of mud over twenty feet in the air. It was now October and the day I had been waiting for a long time had finally arrived; it was hick day. This is the one day out of the year I get to show my true colors to the school, because I am only one out of a handful of real hicks at Bob Jones High School. Now, because of my four past accidents that were all linked directly to mud riding, I had sworn to my parents that I would never put my Jeep Wrangler back in the mud. However, what would just one last time hurt? “This was it”, I told myself, “this is the final time I will go off-road in my Jeep and after this I will fully respect what my father and mother worked so hard to get me.” My near death wreck that almost took four of my friends lives and my life in the blink of an eye completely turned my life around, I now cherish and respect everything that I am granted. To begin with it was 7:30 in the morning and I had just finished making my rounds picking up all my friends for school. My buddy Caleb and I were in the front and we had been planning this day for months. He and I went all out dressing up for hick day. We both wore full camouflage attires from head to toe. I even had on my enormously thick camo hunting boots; they were so thick I could not even feel the gas or brake pedal through them. In the rear of my Jeep were three girls all crammed together in that tiny, two...

...Experimental Research investigation: Theory, heat causes metal to return to its original shape. Test subject: A 1970 Jeep CJ5 (civilian Jeep) series that has a dent in the right rear side panel. I have conducted experimental research on the properties of metal to determine the best process to use to remove the dent and return the metal to its pre accident appearance, safety, and functionality. Type of informal research conducted: Cause and effect (metallurgical reactions using heat versus cold straightening). To conduct our research I started by collecting data on the type of metal used to form the side panel of the Jeep CJ5 . Through research we found that the metal was “common carbon steel” which originally was “stamped” by the manufacturer. Through our research we found that the carbon steel used in 1970 had a low percentage of carbon which allows the metal to be malleable and easy to manipulate. We started our experiment on a test subject piece of flat carbon steel which mimicked the properties of our subject CJ5. To change the shape of the test subject metal we introduced harm to the metal by hammering the surface. This form of experimental manipulation allowed us to produce a test subject that was chemically similar to our controlled subject. First, we used heat on the test metal to soften it. This type of manipulation is called Annealing and causes the molecules in the metal to change form therefore changing the properties of the metal. The effect of our experiment...

...Whitney Harney Whitney Harney University of Phoenix: CJS 230 University of Phoenix: CJS 230 Parole and Manadatory Release Checkpoint Week 8 Parole and Manadatory Release Checkpoint Week 8 “Parole is the release of an inmate, prior to the expiration of the inmate’s court-imposed sentence, with a period of supervision to be successfully completed by compliance with the conditions and terms of the release agreement ordered by the Commission.” (Commission, 2004) Once a prisoner is getting close to the end of their sentence they can be paroled, but do not necessarily qualify. If they are released they are closely watched and if they violate any conditions to their parole they can simply be thrown right back into jail by the Commission. (Commission, 2004) Mandatory release is a date that is set when parole is denied. They calculate it by how much good time the offender is entitled to and how much “extra” good time is earned. If they are on mandatory release they are to treat it just like parole and the felons need to realize that it can be revoked and a warrant can be issued out for their arrest. (United States Department of Justice) Parole and mandatory release differs due to the fact that they cannot deny mandatory release. The prison has to release you if a certain amount of days are served, and parole can be denied at the hearing for the inmate. Parole you also have to be qualified, where mandatory release you do not. The current inmates who have committed a...

...Prison Systems Linda Hester CJS 230 December 12, 2010 Hiram Porter Prison Systems Prison is just one of a number of sanctions available to the courts to deal with those who commit criminal offenses. The United States corrections systems have been in effect for many years. The idea of these systems came from England and the concentration was on punishment more than anything else. However, over the years, like everything else, state and federal prisons have changed. This includes the growth, different types of institutions, the security levels, and types of criminals. These changes however, come with two downfalls, the committing of more crimes and prisons have become overcrowded. Even though overcrowding in prisons is a problem, the state and federal prison systems are effective because they punish those who break the law and they keep the rest of society safe. The state prison systems have been around for more than 200 years, and there use is to confine inmates who will be serving time for more than one year. The jails in use were to confine inmates with no regard of their well being and they were dirty. However, all this changed with the first state prison opening in the late 1700s and it was the Walnut Street Prison in Philadelphia. The Walnut Street Prison design and the way it was run was to keep prisoners in solitude so they could reflect back on what they had done. Because this prison kept the inmates in solitude and did not offer work programs in the...
