Police Brutality I would define police brutality as something an officer or person of authority does that is out of line and to excessive on force. When an officer throws someone to the ground they need to end it there not slam their heads into the ground and put knees on their faces and such. When an officer handcuffs someone they still need to have respect and not tighten them so tight that circulation is being cut off or their wrists bleed. The relationship between police brutality, police corruption, and police misconduct are all very different and similar at the same time! The three concepts are all out of line, inappropriate takes on policing. They should not be done by a police officer but yet they are! The three concepts are alike because each one of them is something wrong that the officer is doing that may back fire on them and make their life miserable! At the same time though there is a limit or a fine line as I like to call it where there may be acceptations to certain things. For example when it comes to police brutality the officer needs to know their actions speak louder than words and if the arrestee is someone who is swinging fists at the cops or throwing things of that nature then they would have the right to throw them down to the ground unexpected and they would of course have a bit more irritation at that point so therefore they would probably be a bit rougher with their arrestee. I feel that their should be cameras on all dash boards and hats of the officers. The reason I think this should be done is because I know that if there are no cameras the officers feel they are never being checked on and they may get away with anything. Now if they have cameras they may act differently and do their

...Write a 200- to 300-word response addressing the following questions: How does stress affect the policing community? How does police culture support police officers in evolving job situations? What resources exist to help officers handle stress? When stress affects the policing community it can have a negative impact on officers, even meaning the matter of life and death. It is important for police officers to maintain their stress to a minimal level to avoid many different side effects of it. When police are stressed it can cause depression, anxiety, anger issues, and many more things. Each one of these side effects is not a good thing for an officer because it can cloud their judgment and make them make the wrong decision or not react fast enough. Typically when a police officer is involved with a on the job situation they will go through some type of debriefing or counseling by someone, this is especially true when it comes to a shooting because some officers may feel they did something wrong by shooting and/or killing someone. As well as being debriefed and counseled because of a stressful situation, it also helps them to remember all the details of the event in case it goes to court. There are many resources available to officers to help assist them in dealing with job related stress. When I worked at the prison we had an EAP (Employee Assistance Program). In a nut shell it was your typical counseling session with a trained professional, we were allowed a certain...

Organizational Theories

...Organizational Theories Amanda Stasiewicz CJS210 12/21/2014 There are three major organizational theories associated with policing. These three theories are the contingency theory, institutional theory, and the resource dependency theory. The contingency theory was designed for understanding and belief that the police organizations were created and structured to achieve certain goals such as crime control and prevention. The contingency theory leads us to believe that organizations must adapt and make adjustments based on our surrounding environment. We must stay up to date with new technology and adjust to survive. The institutional theory leads us to think that police organizations are social institutions. It leads us to think that there isn’t any real structure involved within these organizations. This theory suggests that the organizations develops ideas off of the surrounding environment. Last is the resource dependency theory. The resource dependency theory suggests that these organizations must obtain and use different resources in order to survive. They must use the resources available in order to continue adapting and adjusting to society. If for some reason the resources become unavailable then the organization does not survive. In my opinion the theory that best serves police organizations would be the resource dependency theory. We have so many different resources available and if they do become unavailable...

Diversity in the Police Departments

...Diversity in the Police Departments CJS/210 12/03/2014 “According to Wilson (1978), all police departments were faced with two fundamental but different types of problems: problems of law enforcement and problems of order maintenance. Law enforcement problems typically involved illegal conduct that could lead to an arrest, whereas order maintenance problems involved less serious behavior that in many cases could be dealt with informally by the police. Based on a study of eight police departments, Wilson concluded that police organizations could be divided into one of three basic categories depending on how they approached these problems: the watchman style, the legalistic style, and the service style.” (Grant & Terry, 2008, Chapter 9) The watchman style places great emphasis on order maintenance and individual officer discretion instead of the letter of the law. The watchman police officer may be more willing to issue warnings, help informants stay out of trouble, or to help work out disputes between citizens instead of making an arrest. The watchman uses discretion in determining when to issue a ticket or make an arrest. The watchman may use bullying or harassment to help maintain the peace. The legalistic style of policing tends to replace the watchman style as the police become more professional technologically advanced, and more proactive. The legalistic style emphasizes the importance of law enforcement and maintaining clear and impartial legal standards for the...

The different levels would be local, state and federal. I will also explain how they are organized and how their roles relate to the law. In the United States we have one of the most complex law enforcement systems because of the various levels of their policing agencies. In the United States each ton, county, state, city, and small village has its own policing agency. Even though there are various levels of policing agencies the way they organize them are all very similar. This is because law enforcement agencies have the same objective. The organization of the police agencies are hierarchical. These organizations are designs with rank structure, separate departments and units. These components work together to form a fully functioning law enforcement agency. Some examples of local agencies are city, county, town, and incorporated village police. These agencies work together in order to ensure safety at a local level. There are many different functions and roles of the local police agencies. Local police are responsible for performing many routine activities. The duties include patrolling the neighborhood community, enforcing the law, providing emergency services, conducting investigations, and upholding community relations. Local...
