...A Study of the Garasia Tribe and Strategies to Evangelize Them 1.) Overview of the Tribal Groups in Rajasthan Rajasthan is a state steeped in culture and history. Rajasthan, or the realm of the Kings, as it is known, is perhaps one of the princely states of all in India. Its history is abundant with stories and legends about its kings and rulers. In its golden age, the region was ruled by the Rajputs, and in their honor the state was known as Rajputana in its erstwhile years. These were the royal people, the Kshatriyas, the warriors and they were known to be fierce fighters, extremely proud of their heritage and position. But the state itself comprised of many other people groups, most of them tribal in nature. The state even now comprises of five major tribal people groups with many other either being the branches of these major groups or minor ones. These five tribal groups are Mina, Bhil, Garasia, Saharia and Damor. Of these tribal groups, the Minas are the largest of the lot with almost a share of close to 50 percent of the total population; Bhils come close with a population of 45 percent and then come the Garasias with a population comprising 3-4 percent of the total population of tribal people. The population of the Garasias in Rajasthan has been dwindling in the recent past because of their migration to North Gujarat. 2.) The Garasias Numerically speaking, the Garasias constitute the third largest group of the state of Rajsthan. Though they are also...

He talks about the air being thick and dense with the tall tress surrounding the area where sunshine was blocked from the forest bring a view of darkness and fear. 3. Achebe views Africa as a marvelous place where he thrives and people are happy living according to their belief. 4. The details given from her shows the happiness of the clan dancing to the ekwe, and corrects to a celebration of a man taking the title of his clan. 5. The reaction Achebe has to Conrad’s choices are anti-parallel to each other. In Achebe’s paragraph’s, differences of tone, syntax, and detail are shown. Achebe’s tone is very unique in the way she writes her paragraphs. In the first and second paragraph, she talks about the clans performing peaceful dances. “Then from the distance came the faint beating of the ekwe…” a peaceful dance from a distant clan. “It is an ozo dance,” the man said from themselves. Achebe uses the Ibo language to show a difference of tone to indicate how the clans would talk among themselves. Conrad’s style of tone is much more different from Achebe. He uses more of a suspenseful tone than anything. Conrad says “we penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.” His sentence structures create this suspense of mystery and the condescending of darkness as the reader continues to read. The syntax of sentence structure is short and to the point in Achebe’s view of Africa. Compared...

...I made a totem pole to represent animals that have to do with my character. While studying totem poles, I’ve found reasons for their being and how they’re used. They are in place to symbolize cultural beliefs. They can also be used to show familiar legends and notable events. The totem poles can be used as structural support. They’ve been used as welcome signs as well. They can be significant to the person who carves the totem pole. The importance depends on the knowledge of the figures and meanings on the totem pole. The first animal I put on my totem pole was a fish. The first reason is that my zodiac sign is Pisces. The symbol for Pisces is a fish. My Aunt knows a lot about astrology and I’ve learned a bit about it from her. Another reason...

...To the south is Sagami Bay which is surrounded by Kanagawa to the east, Shizuoka to the west, and the Shonan coastline to the north. The bay has seen many natural disasters throughout history, including the massive tsunami of 1498, generated by the Nankai earthquake which destroyed the temple housing the Daibustu. The area is often struck with powerful Typhoons which cause huge storms surges and severe winds. These events were so unpredictable that they had a profound impact on the early Japanese cultures and the development of the Shinto religion. The city of Kamakura has a very historical value in history as it was once considered the de facto capital of Japan during the Kamakura period. There are many historical sites and shrines in the city that date back to the 11th century, with the most recognizable being the Daibustu, or better know in English as the Great Buddha. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was first established by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063 as a base for the Minamoto clan, " He returned to Kamakura, and built a small shrine for the Hachiman Kami (the Japanese word for Shinto deities) near the coast to give thanks for success in suppressing the rebellion. The Hachiman Kami was regarded as the protector Kami of the warrior class" (History Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, n.d.). Tsurugaoka Hchimangu is the most important shrine in Kamakura, as it is devoted to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and founder of the Kamakura Shogunate. The descendant of Yoriyoshi, Yoritomo...

...I.A. The text, “Fujiwara and Murakami Genji as Assistants to Emperors” was written by Chikafusa, a couple of years after the Period Kamakura Japan (1180 to 1133) and went into the Kenmu Restoration period. This period was marked by the rise of militarism that attempted to make Japan a centralized government. During this time the imperial line remained unchallenged and exercised a vast amount of power. In 1333, the Kamakura shogunate was overthrown by warrior forces and Go-Daigo became the emperor . Go-Daigo belonged to a branch of the Fuijiwara house. He believed that the overthrow of the shogunate was a sign to revive what he believed was the most efficient form of government, the direct imperial rule. This period marked by imperial restoration was called “Kenmu Restoration” and lasted until 1336. As competition for power and land rose, the government was unable to stabilize the country. Two key figures Nitta Yoshida and Ashikaga Takauji were the faces to the struggle for power. Since they could not reach consensus Japan was split in two and the “War Between the Northern (Kyoto) and the Southern (Yoshino) Court,” began. Chikafusa did not play a major role in the Kenmu Restoration but did rally for support for the Southern Court among the eastern warriors. Coming from a high-ranking noble family and prominent minister at court, Chikafusa wrote was the author of Jinnō Shōtōki. This work, also known as “Chronicle of the Legitimate Succession of Divines Sovereigns...

Works selected: • Interior of the kondo, Kanshinji, Osaka, fig.151, page125 • Taizokai (Womb World) of Ryokai Mandara, fig.152, page126 The Heian period (794-1185) takes its name from the new capital established in 794 at Heian, or Capital of Peace and Tranquility, a variation on the Tang Chinese capital’s name of Chang’an (Everlasting Peace). The shift in power from the Buddhist community back into the hands of the powerful aristocratic family is fully realized early this period (794-951). Buddhism was allowed only a limited presence within the capital itself, reorients itself into esoteric cults focused on complex philosophies and rituals as well as into more populist “saviour” movement that helped for the first time spread the religion widely amongst the common people. One of the major events of the Early Heian period, the introduction into Japan of Tendai and Shingon Buddhism was precipitated by the loss of direction on the part of the Buddhism community that had led to the...

This is communication at its finest, at least in the world we live today. Today’s society is undoubtedly dependent on technology. With every new product that corporations produce it leads to people wanting them. Technology has been around for quite some time and is being constantly innovated. Though technology has been able provide incredible miracles through discovering new diseases, healing diseases, and preventing them, they also can lead to causing competition not only within society but within corporations as well. As a country, we strive to become better and stronger. However, the use of technology is creating a border between communication and negotiation. Technology, although captivating and helpful, can have its drawbacks. It is the brick wall between society and themselves. No longer...

...Tyler Ellis History Dr. Gregory Moore September 24, 2014 Through the life of the legendary samurai Taira no Masakado we experience the constant Japanese Civilization struggle of a peaceful controlling throughout the nation. And throughout the struggles of Taira no Masakado we see how the circumstances that he was brought into caused such a being to become one of the most fearsome warriors the country has ever known. To go into the question of if I believe Masakado was a hero or a rebel I believe he was both. Growing up his family lived north of the Kanto plain, in the Toyoda and Sashima districts of Shimosa. He grew up in horse ranching territory, which horses were seen as a high valued item then. After taking over the land that his family had by blood it would come to think that at some point he would get attacked. While heading back home Masakado was ambushed by Minamoto no Tasuku near the borders of Hitachi, Shimozuke, Musashi, and Shimōsa, a place called Nomoto. The ambush and the events that happen during it spark off a series of events that will soon determine Taira no Masakado’s fate. With this being said I’d like to point out that if he hadn’t gotten ambushed it would have never caused such an issue. First off the Emperor in Kyoto did not do much, leaving power in the hands of landowners and provincial governors, most of whom had private armies. Only so they could more efficiently rip off and beat up the people they were supposed to be protecting. But instead...

...consisted mostly of collections of poetry written in the borrowed Kanji script of China. Prose was limited to fairy tales and a couple of memoirs written in the new phonetic syllabary known as kana. No one had ever written a novel, let alone a novel with character development and a complex plot. The Heian period lasted from A.D. 794-1185. The emperor had moved the capital to Nagaoka from its previous location at Nara (then known as Heijo-kyo), to escape the overbearing influence of the Kegon sect of Buddhism. Ten years later, in 794, it was shifted again to Kyoto (Heian-kyo). It was a peaceful era with the emperor acting largely as a figurehead and centre of ceremonial activities while the real political power lay in the hands of the Fujiwara clan, the power behind the throne for 500 years. Heian Society The society depicted in the Tale is one of an elite group of aristocrats - perhaps 5,000 in all - uninterested in anything but their own leisure and with the emperor at the centre of their world. Obsessed with rank and breeding, they were acutely sensitive to the beauty of nature and the pleasures of music, poetry, calligraphy and fine clothing. Heian courtiers knew little of the world outside the...

...The Konjikido at Chusonji was a jewel in the countryside of Japan. Completed in 1126 by the Fujiwara family, its function was not only as a funeral chapel for the three generations of male leaders of the Fuijwara, but also to aid the fallen soldiers of the recent civil wars to “achieve rebirth in Amida’s Pure Land.” 1 Fujiwara No Kiyohira emerged from the civil wars victorious, determined to found a new capitol for the provinces of the north, located in Hiraizumi in the Iwate province. In the construction of the new capitol and its temples, his intentions seem clear: he wanted the splendor and opulence of his newly founded capitol to rival that of the imperial city, Kyoto. It is possible he was trying to prove himself and his family to the Kyoto rulers and this is what led to the magnificence of Chusonji. The low regard the aristocracy felt toward the northern Fujiwara is shown in several stories.2 After establishing the capital, Kiyohira was appointed to command six additional outlying districts, which further consolidated his power and authority.3 This allowed him access to local gold mines, natural resources, and land which could be used to build Chusonji. During this time, Kyoto was changing. The insei government had taken hold, starting a period in which aristocrats that were members of the Pure Land sect of Buddhism funded many temples. This was probably an influence when Kiyohira was planning the complex at Chusonji. 4 One of forty original buildings, and one...
