Classical Literacy Report #10 In Greek mythology Demeter, or Ceres, her Roman name, was the great Olympian goddess of agriculture, fertility, wheat and the harvest, and is also known as the goddess of planned society. Sometimes she is referred to as "Mother Nature" or "mother of cereals" hence her title. She is the daughter of Cronus and Rhea, sister to Poseidon, Zeus, Hades, Hera and Hestia, spouse to Poseidon, Zeus, Mekon, and Iasion, and Despoina, and mother to Persephone Arion, Plutus, Philomelus, Eubuleus, Chrysothemis and Amphitheus I. She has the ability to "control" farming and holds power over Earth's agriculture. Demeter also taught mankind the essential/basic tactics of farming …show more content…
Demeter is very famous for her myth about her daughter Persephone's abduction. Demeter was the sister of Zeus, who with she had a daughter named Persephone. Demeter's job was to take care of the harvest and crops, but if she got upset the crops would die. This made all gods and mortals work hard to keep her happy, and only one thing could keep her happy, Persephone. Persephone was very beautiful, for she had even attracted her own uncle, Hades! One day she had been frolicking in the grass, picking flowers when suddenly the lust-filled, desperate god of the Underworld had noticed her, instantly falling in love and destined to keep her for himself. She was then kidnapped and quickly descended into the ground before her with her new husband, Hades. While Persephone's cries were inaudible to the world above, Demeter realized something was terribly wrong, for her daughter was absent from the earth and heavens.
