Canter’s Behavior Management Cycle
There’s a lot ways to handle a student disruptive behavior in the classroom. However, in this paper this will discuss the benefit of how Canter’s Behavior Management Cycle can benefit a child behavior. In this paper I will describe a child personality, behavior and how I will handle the student in my classroom. On page 72, the Canters’ insisted “The Canters’ approach urged teachers to “take charge” in the classroom and showed them how to do so- just what teachers were looking for at a time when prevailing permissiveness was making teaching ever more difficult” (Canters, 2001, pg. 72). This is a powerful tool that helps the teacher manage a discipline plan to address disruptive students. The Canters’ Cycle is a model that helps the teacher not only addresses disruption, but yet, allows students to learn and change the behavior.
Every teacher has a disruptive child in their classroom. There is one specific child that always does something to interrupt. Sometimes a child may not have to do the big things but also, their small disruptive behaviors than cause disruption. There was a child name Joe and he was eight years old. He has his ways in getting the teacher attention, which I can never see to understand why he continue do the things he did. He was funny, lazy, and never seem to pay attention in class. There are students that sometimes seem to fall off track, but Joe seems to fall off track every time. His behavior was an everyday thing which as a teacher I needed to make a stand. As a teacher, I know exactly what I can do to put Joe exactly where he need to be. I had plenty of options but theirs is one particular management approach that I chose above it all. Secondly, Joe has a behavior that it seems that you cannot control. When he goes to his other classes I do not think other teacher get bother by it. In my classroom it

The way at which these negative influences are handled will have a lasting effect on the students learning process. There are a vast array of theories and styles to choose from to help and control these behaviors from getting out of hand. Disruptive behavior can be any behavior that bothers, interferes with, disturbs, or prevents effective learning (Canter, 2006). ...students begin filing into the classroom. They proceed to do their regularly scheduled activities of putting away their coats, backpacks, and then checking in. Unlike last week, all seems to go well in the morning. I notice that some of the students don’t check in right away and the attendance taker reminds them to check-in. When a few of the students still don’t check-in, the attendance taker consults with Mrs. Sinatro on what to do. Mrs. Sinatro informs the student that she should just mark the students absent. This decision left me feeling really uncomfortable. Whenever a student is marked absent, it is noted in their “permanent record.” I don’t think it is fair to penalize a student so much just for not following directions. There has to be a milder way to do it. You might think about how long students have had this policy in place and if they should be responsible for doing this on their own. I tend to think like you, but students do need to develop responsibility. I’m sure the teacher doesn’t want to have parents commenting on absences that were not absences. At 8.40 a.m., the students head to Success Makers in the library (see description above). During this time, Mrs. Sinatro and I take the time to correct homework from the previous night. I am happy to be included in doing this task, even if it is small, because I know that it is something that will have to be done when I am a certified teacher.
