The interventions I planned to use with J during class were based directly from my interview with Mrs. T. I felt that it was important to show her that I would be working with J during school to help him achieve his goals. After the interview, I could clearly understand what Mrs. T was worried about with J and why. I knew he had some behavioral issues, but I was not aware Mrs. T was worried about his social skills and building substantial relationships with other children in the classroom. Because J typically acts out during school, we had to make sure he utilizes the safe center and talks about his feelings with an adult. Along with this, I planned to have J engage in more sensory filled activities. I understood that starting this learning …show more content…
At first, we just showed him where it was located in the classroom and how he can use it. I explained to him that if he was feeling angry or overwhelmed he could just tell a teacher and then proceed to remove himself from the situation and go to the safe center. J seemed very interested in this and agreed to try it. I also told him that if he didn’t want to be alone, he could bring a teacher with him to talk about how he was feeling. This seemed to be working and I was continuously observing J and how he was doing with this strategy. For example, on October 27, 2016, J was playing with a group of children during choice time in the block area. One child took a block from J and it ruined what he was building. I watched J and he looked very angry. I could tell he was thinking about what his next move would be. He then stood up, walked over to me, and said, “Miss Bethany, I need to go to the safe center. Will you come with me?” I was so impressed with J’s actions, I jumped up and said, “Of course I’ll come with you J!” This was such a huge improvement for J, especially since someone ruined his work. In Moral Classrooms, Moral Children by DeVries (2012), he tells us we need to, “Try to understand the child’s point of view” (pg. 201). He explains to us that it is important to try to change what the child is thinking and feeling so that we can help to change their behavior, rather than just trying to change their behavior. ...My initial classroom observation went totally different from what I was expecting. I was extremely nervous to be just "staring" at students and typing on my huge laptop.
