On the first day of our unit, we will begin with a discussion about forests to assess their previous knowledge. The discussion will also be used to gauge what topics students are especially interested in, such as specific animals or plants. We will read a book about forests to spark the children's interest, as well. The next day when the children come in the classroom, the classroom will be completely decorated with different trees, animals and other forest themed items. During our outside time we will go on a scavenger hunt in the forest next to our school to collect supplies for our classroom. I will have the students find leaves, sticks, rocks, acorns and pine cones that can be used in at our sensory table, math center and art center. In …show more content…
We will discuss the difference between deciduous and coniferous trees, and the different animals in the forest, such as owls, raccoons, deer, and bears. To learn more about these topics, we will be doing yoga with yoga poses that imitate animals and plants found in the forest. Later in the unit, the students will read a book about animal prints and how to identify them. We will make our own animal prints paintings by using stamps of animal prints on our own feet! In our play centers, we will also have items, such as toy animals and trees, for the students to play with and explore these topics. We will be reading the book, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, and the students will use the book to act out the text and complete an obstacle course. This will lead to a discussion of what it would feel like to be in the forest and if they would be afraid. As the unit progresses, we will be visited by a guest speaker who is a conservationist that works to preserve and protect forests and animals. They will discuss with the class what we can do to keep our forests safe and why that is important. To make this idea more concrete for the students, we will then visit a nearby state park to learn from park rangers, have a picnic, and explore the

...Classroom Observation Conducting classroom observations are very important to the prospective teacher. Observing helps show how experienced teachers manage their classroom. For this observation it was important to notice how the classroom was arranged, how the teacher interacted with the students, the teacher’s management style, and interview the teacher. Upon speaking to the principal about observing he assigned me to Mrs. Johnson’s third grade class, because she was the best organized. I sat in on a Novice level class taught by Mrs. Veronica. The students were all around 20-30 years old. The general demographic of the students was Hispanic and African. They were all enthusiastic and happy. I enjoyed sitting in on this class and getting to know the students and the teacher. After observing Mrs. Veronica’s class I saw that even though this was a Novice level class most of the students were at an upper reading level. ...The approach I took here was to observe children as they progressed through a particular school system.
