Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator was born into the country of Egypt at the time Rome was on the rise. She would suffer loses of her husbands, her country, and eventually her life. From her birth in 69BC to her suicide in 31BC, she did not live the life of what one would consider to be that of a princess. Cleopatra was the daughter of the pharaoh of Egypt, thus a princess. One would think that being born a princess leads a life of happiness and the eventual life goal of being the Pharaoh; however, this was not the case for Cleopatra. She did not get to live a happy life. This princess lived in Egypt at the time when Rome was extremely powerful. Rome was a growing world power and conquering country after country. Her “City is now under the sea,”7 meaning visiting will require a boat. However, one can still travel along her path from Alexandria, Egypt to Rome, Italy. She went to Rome upon her marriage to Caesar. She made this trip from Egypt to Rome with a newborn child, Caesarion. Once in Rome, she lived with Caesar until his assignation. Upon Caesar’s assignation, Cleopatra fled back to Egypt with Caesarian. Her second trip was not as easy; for rather than traveling with an entourage has she did the first trip, she was fleeing for her life upon the second trip. As Americans, Cleopatra is an excellent example to follow. She shows is through her relationship with Caesar and Mark Antony that she I brilliant in forming alliances to gain more power and protection for her country. She used the fact that she was a woman of power to gain a relationship with Caesar. She went on to offer Antony an army in order for him to gain control of Rome over Octavian, and Antony promised to not attack Egypt. Cleopatra is always a figure of interest. She is one of the best known female rulers in history. Cleopatra is a figure of women’s suffrage. Upon her death and Rome’s conquering of Egypt, “The Romans destroyed art that showed her. They didn't want the Egyptians to remember her. That would make it easier for them to rule Egypt.”11 This shows Cleopatra has a strong leader and an example of woman advocating freedom for her
