...Knowing your Audience: Close your eyes Doug McGill BCOM/275 August 19, 2012 Eric Graves Close your eyes imagine that you are trapped in complete darkness with little to no room surrounded by 32 other men, the fear of no escape from a room smaller than the size of an average classroom, and you are half a mile underground with no way out. Unless, someone experienced this nightmare firsthand this would be difficult for anyone to imagine. This was the terrifying and exhausting reality for 33 Chilean gold miners August 5, 2010 through October 9, 2010. There are two difficult types of communication that the San Esteban Company faced. The Company had to address the families of the trapped miner’s and the rest of world. The considerations of roles the Company played when addressing the two different audiences will be discussed. And what actions were taken before and after the message was delivered to ensure that the messages were received as they were intended for each audience. Addressing the Audience Everyone experiences fear in their own way, but the thought of being trapped half a mile underground, 2600 feet, almost 900 meters is a terrifying thought for anyone. The miner’s from the San Esteban Mining Company lived through the fear of claustrophobia for 70 days in almost complete darkness. It took 17 days before the miners were discovered to be trapped and still alive. The miners made two days of food and water last 17 days. The miners were discovered through constant...

...when it comes to the health and wellbeing of your child. Vision insurance, dental insurance and health insurance can ensure that children go through their school years with all of the care they need to keep them from missing valuable school days. Why is vision insurance so important? Because, according to the American Optometric Association, as much as 80% of the learning a child does in school is accomplished using their eyes and having insurance that pays for a yearly eye exam ensures that a child’s eye health is good and that their parents know when glasses are necessary. Children need to be able to see clearly so that they can function day-to-day; but more importantly, they...

...Why are some fruits seedless? Why do leaves turn colour in the fall? Why is green roof important? | Anatomy of Mammals | Why do we close our eyes when we sneeze? Why do people feel sleepy after they eat?Why do we have eyelashes? | Microbiology | Why does milk sour? Why does our whole body ache when we get cold? | Why is grass green? The reason the grass you see every day in your front yard or in the park is because the cell of the grass contains chloroplast, chloroplast is similar to mitochondria but only found in plant and protista. Chloroplast by itself won’t make the plant green, it just switches the sunlight into energy, to make the plant greener you need a pigment called chlorophyll, chlorophyll is a pigment that provides the absorption of light to provide energy to make it into photosynthesis and that causes a chemical change to the plant. Why do our muscles ache when we exercise? The reason muscles ache after exercising is because you just stretched out your muscles fibers and your muscles are about to enter the repairing stage and this is caused by the lactic acid. The aching that you get in your muscles is not really harmful but it indicates that your exercise was successful. Aching may last for one to two days, and if your trying to get rid of it as soon as possible is to drink a lot of water after your exercise and eat healthier. There is a lot of food that will reduce the lactic acid such as vegetables because it contains...

...Personal Space: Personal Space is all about how close someone is in proximity to you. Are they making direct eye contact with you? Which way are they facing when they are talking to you: side by side, directly facing? What is the degree of contact with that person; are they touching your arm or shoulder? And how loud or soft is the volume of their voice? Walking down the street, sitting on the bus, you are shoulder to shoulder with mass groups of people. In summary, Chinese people are more comfortable with up-close and personal interaction. Cultural practice changes take a long time to adjust to. China’s vast population coupled with its traditional ideals of a communal society (for example, five generations under one roof) has created a culture in which personal space is typically not common or highly valued. - Pushing in line - Looking over your shoulder and touching you - Standing very close to you while talking - Talking about you with someone else while your standing nearby - Touching: arm, shoulder, head - Strangers looking at what your doing, getting very close, and not caring (watch a movie on the subway and see how many people come over to watch) - Blowing smoke in/around your face - Staring for long periods of time, often accompanied by pointing - Cell phones ringing with really loud ringtones (noise space) - Talking really loud on the phone, even at work. - Answering phones/ Talking in movie theaters - Direct and blunt comments about certain...

...design your office work station so that it fits you and allows for a comfortable working environment for maximum productivity and efficiency. An ergonomically correct office work station will help you avoid fatigue and discomfort – who doesn’t want that? Whether you’re an OHS professional in charge of providing a safe work environment for the employees at your company or simply a computer user who wants to avoid fatigue, following a few simple guidelines can help you significantly improve your office work station. Office Ergonomics Tips Follow these 10 office ergonomics tips to help you avoid fatigue: 1) Make sure that the weight of your arms is supported at all times. If your arms are not supported, the muscles of your neck and shoulders will be crying by the end of the day. 2) Watch your head position, and try to keep the weight of your head directly above its base of support (neck). Don’t “crane” your head and neck forward. 3) Don’t be a slouch! Slouching puts more pressure on the discs and vertebrae of your back. Use the lumbar support of your chair and avoid sitting in a way that places body weight more on one than on the other. Move your chair as close to your work as possible to avoid leaning and reaching. Make sure to “scoot” your chair in every time you sit down. 4) The monitor should be placed directly in front of you, with the top no higher than eye level. The keyboard should be directly in front of the monitor so you don’t have to frequently turn your head and...

...You should never take your eyes for granted; don't wait until you have a problem to have a vision exam. You should have your eyes checked annually. The eye is very delicate and in order to see well, all parts must be able to function properly. Always try to protect your eyes. Did you know that the bones in your head protect your eyes from injury; even the eyelids close out unwanted light and also dirt. Your tears from nearby tear ducts work hard to keep the eye's surface moist and clean. The eye is filled with a clear jelly in its center called the vitreous humor. Three layers of tissue surround the vitreous humor. There is an outer layer, which has tough tissues and protects the eye; then there is a middle layer with a network of blood vessels that give nourishment to the eye. An inner layer contains cells sensitive to light that enable you to see. The whites of your eyes are the sclera, which is a tough, fibrous tissue. The cornea is the bulge in the front center of the eye that serves as a window to let light into the other layers of the eye. There is a thin layer of tears that gives the cornea smoothness to be crystal clear. The conjunctive is a clear membrane that lines the insides of the eyelid and also covers the front of the eye around the cornea. The pupil is a round opening surrounded by muscles that regulate the amount of light that enters the eye; pupils will enlarge if the light is too dim and if the light is too bright, pupils become small to keep out too much...

...physiology and nonverbal. Facial expressions, eye contact and body language are ways you use your body to communicate to others. It can sometimes be easier to send conflicting communications both verbal and nonverbal. When communicating with others you must pay close attention to the nonverbal signals that you are sending. Problems arise if you don't pay close attention to the nonverbal signals you send during communication. When you consider way we use our bodies to communicate we should consider things such as our appearance or the amount space between two people. When you are standing in a group of people and you feel like someone is standing to close you may take a step back, this is an example of communicating demonstratively. Body language is generally clearly understood. Others can often tell how you feel about them based on the way that you sit or stand during communication. One example of sending a person a clear message that you do not want to be in a conversation with them would be to turn your back to them. Body language is used in our everyday communications such as using hand gestures to say hello, goodbye or even get away. Some people use hand gestures or body movements to enhance what they are trying to say, we even use facial expressions. The most common form of demonstrative communications would probably be a smile or a frown. There are many other ways to communication with facial expressions such as tightening your forehead in amazement, wrinkle...

...Far Our eyes are a well-designed optical system, our eyes are a complicated and highly developed organ. You could say that we rely on our eyes for just about everything we do without lives, whether it’s our personal or work related. Wouldn’t you agree? I believe that’s a good enough reason for us to take good care of our eyes. According to “The Big Book of Family Eye Care” by Joseph DiGirolamo, if it wasn’t for our eyes that saw these beautiful roses and flowers we’d never stop and smell and admire them. Now that you stopped and thought about it aren’t you happy you get to experience that moment and that’s something most of us don’t appreciate enough. A 2009 study conducted by the National Eye Institute found that the prevalence of nearsightedness, or myopia, rose by 66 percent in the United States since the 1970’s. Nearsightedness or myopia is a condition of the eye that makes it difficult to see objects that are far away. Although, possibly this study most likely didn’t consider the factors of our technology of today affecting our vision such as cell phones, computers, and tablets. I could only imagine if they would have, the percentage would just have been a lot higher. In nearsighted people, the eyeball is too long or the cornea has too much curvature, so the light entering the eye is not focused correctly. The retina in the eye has light sensitive part causing the vision to be viewed blurry. This is easily fixed by going to the eye doctor and having your options be...

...communication. Demonstrative communication can be summed up in three categories: body, physiology and nonverbal. You communicate using your body through eye contact, gestures, or facial expressions. Sometimes you can send conflicting verbal and nonverbal communications. This happening is where the saying originated: "Actions speak louder than words.” Problems arise if you do not pay close attention to the nonverbal signals you send during communication. While couples in love cannot get close enough to each other, you might not enjoy it when someone sits or stands too close to you. When you take a step back, you are communicating demonstratively that someone is invading your space. Everyone no matter who you are or what situation you are in needs individual space. If someone feels that their space is being invaded; it is more than likely going to come out in their body language. The way you dress, apply makeup, or wear your hair is also a form of communication. While you might opt for a suit for business, you might reach for something less formal when relaxing or more seductively for a date. People are often judged on their appreance and this will sometimes make the message or communication they are trying to convey unclear. Your posture has a big impact on how people receive the words that you are saying and how they perceive your message. How you sit and stand communicates with others how you feel about...
