Cloud Computing – Case Study

Introduction

Cloud computing is tech jargon which describes an Internet service that allows company employees to communicate via emails, access massive amounts of data instantaneously at various times and places without the network becoming clogged down due to heavy load usage. Ericsson describes itself as, “a world leader in the rapidly-changing environment of communications technology – providing equipment, software and services to mobile and fixed network operators all over the globe” (Ericsson n.d.). Amazon initiated their web service (AWS) in 2006, by offering IT infrastructure services to businesses in the form of web services referred to as cloud computing. One of the key benefits of cloud computing is the opportunity to replace up-front capital infrastructure expenses with low variable costs that scale with your business (Amazon 2014).
Ericsson benefits of AWS Amazon Web Services provided Ericsson with a highly integrated public cloud with hosting centers in practically every region in the country. This benefit would be a big plus due to the universal impact that Ericsson makes in the telecommunication industry where they provide services to more than one billion consumers. Cost savings was a significant benefit for Ericsson due to not having to expend the capital to build a comparable IT infrastructure internally. Arpit Joshipura, Ericsson Vice President of Silicon Valley (2014) states that, “With cloud computing services, operators can combine the user experience with professional services and will be able to handle a range of issues, such as protection of personal information, confidentiality of sensitive business data, data protection, IT governance, legal questions, unclear regulation, non-standardization, customer support and billing. Additionally, Amazon Web Services provided a proven track record for offering a better quality of service with solid management and a proven track record (Ericsson Case Study 2014).
Evaluation of EC2, S3 and RightScale Scalability or flexibility is an essential feature for a developer and having this capacity in an unlimited capacity is what Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) enabled Ericsson to achieve. EC2 provides Ericsson with a platform that is resizable and is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers, allowing one to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. Amazon EC2 offers a highly reliable environment where replacement instances can be rapidly and predictably commissioned. The service runs within Amazon’s proven network infrastructure and datacenters. The Amazon EC2 Service Level Agreement commitment is 99.95% availability for each Amazon EC2 Region (Amazon EC2). Added scalability features are available with Amazon S3 which allows for data storage of any amount and can be retrieved at anytime and anywhere on the web. It gives any Developer are able to data that is highly scalable, reliable, secure, fast and inexpensive infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. The service aims to maximize benefits of scale and to pass those benefits on to developers (Amazon S3, 1014). Amazon EC2 provides developers the tools to build failure resilient applications and isolate themselves from common failure scenarios. RightScale helps Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers gain visibility across regions and accounts, manage and forecast costs, and record an audit history of changes across their environments. As an AWS customer, you can gain deep insight into your AWS infrastructure and applications with Cloud Portfolio Management from RightScale Amazon Rightscale (2014).
Security Concerns Amazon Web Services is touted to be “world-class, highly secure data centers utilizing state-of-the art electronic surveillance and multi-factor access control systems. Data centers are staffed 24x7 by trained security guards, and access is authorized strictly on a least privileged basis. Environmental systems are designed to minimize the impact of disruptions to operations. And multiple geographic regions and Availability Zones allow you to remain resilient in the face of most failure modes, including natural disasters or system failures (AWS Security Issues 2014). Additional security measures offered includes: Secure access; Built-in firewalls and Multi-factor authentication all represent the added security measures employed by Amazon Web Services.
Scalability, Reliability and Cost Issues Cloud computing evolved from virtualization – an approach that enabled more flexible IT infrastructures and lower IT costs. Virtualization allows for access to large servers without expending the funds for purchasing and maintaining the actual hardware internally. Cloud computing is highly scalable due to the fact that businesses are able to take advantage of the economics associated with scalability without the excessive cost. Scalability is defined by Turban & Volonino (p.163, 2011), “being able to add additional capacity incrementally, quickly and as needed.” Another major concern with business owners is the ability to store large volumes of data and yet be able to retrieve data when needed at various locations, cloud computing meets this demand. Reliability does not appear to be an issue, however the cost to maintain reliable connectivity can become costly according to Andy Gottlieb (2011), “
Most enterprises today deploy MPLS networks from AT&T, Verizon and the like because they are reliable enough, meeting "four nines" (99.99 percent) reliability standards. This reliability, however, comes at a high price. At typical U.S. domestic pricing of ~$350 to as much as $2,500 (internationally) per Mbps per month for copper T1-based connections for a remote office, enterprises have not been able to grow their WAN bandwidth commensurate with the rate at which demand is growing. Security concerns are perhaps the single reason why businesses have not been as eager to take advantage of this advance technology and as with any new technology, some business owners would rather continue to operated their internal systems than to risk security breaches, loss data or a major malfunction in the cloud server. Data breaches, data loss due to fire or some other disaster to the main server, traffic hijacking, insecure interfaces and APIs failures are mentioned as cloud security threats (Security Threats 2014).
Conclusion
In considering the many benefits Ericsson gained by partnering up with Amazon Web Services as their cloud hosting IT platform, one would have to agree that it’s a win-win situation for both businesses. Amazon has demonstrated a continued track record of delivery excellent service to their many clients with nominal security breaches or down times.
