...Benefits of Volunteering The topic I have chosen is on volunteering. Most people would say they do not have time enough for themselves let alone volunteer to help others but you would be surprised how even a little help goes a long way. There are an endless amount of organizations or causes that you could volunteer with even if it’s only a limited amount of time or effort. I personally enjoy working with my hands and building things which is why I enjoy volunteering at Habitat for Humanity. Volunteering is more than doing something for others for free it can be beneficial for you as well. In order to persuade an individual to not only agree with something you have to overcome the what’s in it for me mentality. I believe this thesis will be effective because it will show that helping others can also help yourself. I quickly learned from my own experiences that a common interest with someone can open numerous doors. I know a challenge for this assignment is persuading people to give up their time from their already busy lives to help out another. I have already done some research on this particular topic within the Kaplan Library. What I have found is an enormous amount of material to utilize. There are periodicals, medical research papers and many books available. I also plan on using Google scholar or the local library. The difficult part will be narrowing down the research to keep just a few key points without it becoming an overwhelming amount of information thereby...

...Unit 6 Project: Childhood Obesity Johnnie Howie Kaplan University CM220-03 Professor Thompson April 8, 2014 Childhood Obesity Childhood Obesity is a major issue because of the numbers that this disease has reached in the past year. There are genetic factors that are paired with lifestyle changes. Childhood obesity in the United States has tripled over the past thirty years. A large number of obese children and adults has been the result of these changes over the last decade. This disease has doubled in children and adolescents in the past 30 years. Many public and private schools are playing major roles in establishing safer eating for school aged children and staff. Schools also teach classes that give the children the opportunity to choose a healthier lifestyle. They also offer physical education and practice healthy eating. It is very important that the teachers and other staff are aware of health risk. Communities should also fight to prevent this epidemic from growing and permanently affecting our children which will be our future country. The government and market failures have impacted the increase in childhood obesity. Tariffs, food subsidies, and welfare laws have added to this problem. Obesity is having excess body fat and is a result of calorie imbalance. This disease is easy to recognize and is very difficult to treat. The health effects can be long term if not prevented at an early age. Studies also show that obesity can be inherited;...

...JUVENILE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS Kevin Weller Kaplan University College Composition II CM220 Prof: Diana Gerow August 26, 2012 JUVENILE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS There is currently no known cause and no cure for Juvenile Arthritis, so it is my goal to raise awareness for those in the community that are not aware that children can get arthritis. Many people believe that arthritis only affects older people or those who have worked hard and abused their body over many years. Children still need support to remain active to try and beat the pain and stiffness they are dealing with daily and the community is also important to help support the efforts to find a cure and help those currently impacted with the disease. Juvenile arthritis affects children under the age of 16. JRA can show up overnight and blood tests cannot determine if a child has arthritis. There is currently no cause or cure for this disease that affects 50,000 children in the United States. JRA is often misunderstood or mistaken for other conditions, and thus parents need to learn the signs of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, how to find appropriate medical intervention, and what best practices they can use at home. Juvenile Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that develops in children ages 16 years and younger. Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is the most common type and there is no known cause although hereditary seems to play a part. Arthritis affects approximately 1 out of every 100,000 children mildly and...

...Prostitution Prostitution: Legal or Illegal Ashley Garcia 5/25/13 CM220: College Composition II Prostitution: Legal or Illegal Prostitution is one of the oldest illegal professions of all times. It is not going anywhere so I suggest that it be legalized to make it safer for society. Rape, child pornography and sex/drug crimes could also lower because of legalization. Think about it for a moment; when someone is told not to do something it makes them want to do it that much more, and when someone is told that they can do something, and then it’s not as intriguing to them. I will be doing a lot of research for my project. I will be using the Kaplan library and many different websites. I plan to go to my local library as well. I have not thought about interviewing anyone just yet. I plan to not let emotions or any of my own beliefs get involved in the writing of my paper. I am going to go on just facts. I am not sure what government websites could be useful at this point but I plan to look into it more deeply. Prostitution should be legalized because it can make society safer and calmer. If the prostitutes were made to get a weekly health screening and were given health cards to present, then maybe it will cut down on the STD part of the dilemma. Prostitutes also help to relieve stress from some marriages. If a man can go out and pay for sex, that he is not getting pleased with at home, without any commitments, then it can help to save a marriage. There...

...Greening Community Rosanna Khosho CM220: College Composition December 14, 2013 Community Greening will help out communities in all cities, because Community gardens can plan an important role in child development, a garden can teach children how food is grown and what it looks like before arriving at the checkout counter, and it can save our cities quite a bit of money. These are just a few reasons for urban areas and communities to start Community Gardens. Community Gardens provides places for children to play and learn. Community Gardens and green spaces can play an important role in child development. A garden can teach children how food is grown and what it looks like before arriving at the checkout counter. Children will have a better idea on how food is grown and where it comes from. Children will also learn how to grow a garden and it will keep our children out of the house from playing with their video games and watching television, keeping our kids busy with helping out in the community is an amazing thing. Community Greening can help feed people and save money. Community gardens produce food worth hundreds of dollars. This food and financial savings can be critically important to the nutritional and financial health of families living on low incomes or in neighborhoods poorly served by grocery stores. Community gardens are a source of food for the homeless in some cities, and the community garden plot can also be the first step toward self-sufficiency...

...Running head: New York Yankees Profitable for Baseball The New York Yankees Spending & Pursuit for Perfection is not Detrimental to Baseball Tom Moccia Kaplan University CM220-03AU Professor Holly Sprinkle November 8, 2009 Tom Moccia, CM220-03 STEP 1: Present Your Thesis Statement The New York Yankees spend the most money on payroll, sign the best free agent players to lucrative, long term contracts and have the largest budget to work with year after year in Major League Baseball. The Yankees have also won the most World Series Championships, 27 with the next closest team being the Saint Louis Cardinals with 10. The Yankees high spending threshold is not detrimental to Major League Baseball, but in fact profitable both economically and in terms of fan interest. Yankee fans have an emotional interest to see their team win, while non-Yankee fans have an emotional interest to see them falter. The New York Yankees spend the highest dollar amount in terms of salaries and they also pay the most “luxury tax” which is redistributed by “Revenue Sharing” as per the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The redistribution of revenue from large market teams such as the Yankees benefits small market teams, keeping them viable if not profitable. The spending of the New York Yankees helps keep Major League Baseball as a whole profitable. This is not to say that other teams do not spend a lot of revenue on salaries but it is...

...Writing Challenges Deron Davis CM220 July 21, 2015 Professor Emily Hartsfield Writing Challenges Three aspects of writing that have been difficult for in the past that I wish to improve on are grammar, style and process. When it comes to grammar I often find myself writing in the same manner in which I speak and that might not be appealing or accepted by certain audiences especially in the workplace. There are several ways in which I plan on going about working on these issues. The first plan is to first consider my audience and what type of presentation I will be making. Once I am able to identify my audience and topic more properly I will be able to better choose my writing style to fit the needs. For instance I need to also know if I am attempting to persuade the audience on my topic, describing a situation to them or just giving them a broad narration on the topic. By both identifying my audience and writing style this will help me to go about my thought process in a better way as well. A problem that I would like to solve in my community is the lack of after school recreational centers for teenagers. Some of the challenges that might arise for solving this problem is getting enough parents to back you up and commit to sending their children to the center on a regular basis. Another challenge would be getting the kids to come and keeping their interest in the different topics. I would approach this topic by first presenting all of the facts and the needs...

...Unit 2 Project: Preventing Domestic Violence Against Women Mark Ramos Kaplan University CM220-03 Professor Amanda McCleary August 14, 2012 Preventing Domestic Violence Against Women The “Big Idea” I have decided to tackle is Prevention of Domestic Violence Against Women. My working thesis statement is Domestic Violence is a serious issue nationwide and women are at greatest risk of becoming victims of this form of abuse. Therefore, the only way to break the cycle of domestic violence is to take action; the sooner the better.” I believe my topic is extremely relevant to the present day context. With the necessary research and past experiences I plan to acquire, I hope to develop an effective essay wherein I put up a convincing argument for my reader. To start with, I will research many reliable online sources such as VAWnet.org, an National Online Resource Center on Violence Against Women, which contains resources relevant to research on domestic violence including Applied Research Documents, data sets, research and evaluation tools, fact sheets, research reports, and other publications that provide an analysis, critique and/or review of current related issues (VAWnet.org, 2011). I will look to the Kaplan library’s extensive database to find articles on case studies and statistics of the actions taken against the abusers. I will also be interviewing a few people in my family and friends circle who have been victims of such a heinous act and...

...Unit 2 Assignment CM220 Lisa Lockett Kaplan University My Writing and Community Issues As I first read this assignment, I was a little confused. I have trouble speaking proper English and I know when I start to write in college, I was confusing my teachers with my run-on sentences and incorrect grammar. Now that I have attended Kaplan my teachers have used constructed criticism that help me want to learn to write even more. There are so many reasons why my writing was not reaching my readers. I was afraid of just what I need to write. Not sure, of the correct topic for my paper, I would e-mail my teachers to give me more direction on just what I needed to be writing. I never proof- read my writing before I turned it in I would always be at the deadline because I would always wait until the last minutes and not read the direction correctly. I have problems with my critical thinking. I am fighting against a mental illness and my thoughts are never where they need to be. I have problems with run-on sentences not knowing where to start the next sentences. Now that I know all my problems with me writing, I will try very hard not to do them anymore besides asking my teacher, to confirm my writing assignments. My community has many problems, such as killings, stealing, knockout games, and Mental Illness associated with homeless. I have mental illness so does my sister and mother and father, I take medication, my mother and father has gotten help for their illness. Nevertheless...

...Unit 2 Project: Banning Smoking in Public Anne Smith Kaplan University CM220-03 Professor Johnson December 7, 2010 Banning Smoking in Public The “Big Idea” I have decided to tackle is “nation-wide public smoking bans.” My working thesis statement is “Exposure to cigarette smoke is a serious public health risk. Therefore, it should be banned in all public places, nation-wide.” While I know this proposal is controversial, I think the thesis statement is concise and effective, and with research to support my claim of the health risks smoking poses to everyone, I know I can develop an effective argument. As I research my topic, I will need to make sure that I find reliable data from reputable medical and government organizations such as the Center for Disease Control, the Mayo Clinic, the Surgeon General’s office, and the American Cancer Society. The Kaplan library has a Health Source database, so that would be a logical place to start looking for sources as well. While emotional appeals such as examples of those impacted by second-hand smoke can be compelling and horrible images of blackened lungs and tracheotomies can create fear, only factual evidence of the negative health impact (and the associated costs) will convince many readers that a nationwide public ban is necessary. If I were to pitch my argument to local county executives, urging them of the need for a complete ban on smoking in public places, I would tell them this: The...

...The 2nd Amendment and the Battle for the Bill of Rights in the United States Christopher Jesus Moya CM220 College Composition II Kaplan University Over the last few years it seems that there has been a noticeable amount of gun crime making its way into the media and thus stirring up a debate on gun control. The government wants to make it seem like strict gun control is the answer to lower crime rates. However, we have the constitutional right to bear arms. Gun control laws will not effectively lower crime rates they will just make it more of a hassle for those who are law abiding citizens to get firearms because criminals that want to obtain firearms will start to find illegal ways to obtain them. There are many questions that can be brought up about gun control and whether or not it is infringing on our American Bill of Rights. It seems to be a huge topic of discussion and in modern America leads to a lot of debate. Some questions that we face on gun-control are as follows. If the government put in place stricter gun-control laws does it infringe on people’s rights to own guns? The current laws that are in place are they truly enforceable? Should the governments’ stricter gun laws prohibit gun sales at gun shows without background checks? Would more guns, not less, prevent shooting massacres or gun crimes like the Sandy Hook Shooting? Also, will banning assault rifles and high capacity magazines lessen gun-violence like so many would like to believe here in...

...How to Write an Article Review An article review is both a summary and an evaluation of another writer's article. Teachers often assign article reviews to introduce students to the work of experts in the field. Experts also are often asked to review the work of other professionals. Understanding the main points and arguments of the article is essential for an accurate summation. Logical evaluation of the article's main theme, supporting arguments and implications for further research is an important element of a review. Here are a few guidelines for writing an article review. Steps Sample Article Reviews Sample Newspaper Article Review Sample Research Article Review Writing Your Own Review 1 Read the article several times. Begin by looking quickly at the opening statements, headings and opening sentences of each paragraph and the conclusion. Then go back to the beginning and read the article in its entirety. Reading the article a third time with a highlighter or pen in hand allows for making notes or highlighting important sections. 2 Create a summary outline. This is an outline of the main points made in the article and the supporting research or arguments. It is strictly a restatement of the main points of the article and does not include your opinions. Review the summary outline to eliminate unnecessary items. Erase or cross out the less important arguments or supplemental information. 3 Write an outline of your opinions. ...The Fight against Racism Final Project College Composition CM220 Kaplan University James Price July 14, 2011 Racism has been around for thousands of years. Its roots can even be traced back to the biblical days. Living in our society today, it’s not easy coping with the burdens of this problem. Racism is defined as the belief that one race is superior over another because of the race they are born into. Racism affects all races in our country, not just black or white. Standing up against this disease that is slowing destroying humanity starts with us. Although, the epidemic of racism has gotten much better throughout the years being a better person and treating everyone equal, and as you would want to be treated minimizes the burdens of racism. Imagine the next generation dealing with this burden. We as a people know that if a problem is not corrected than the situation will only get worse. Being knowledgeable of the subject and understanding that everyone is equal is what we should to strive to accomplish in our society. After slavery in the late 18th century most of the white race was concerned about the jobs and economy. They figured that since the slaves were free then they didn’t have to work in the fields, factory or construction. They felt that the slaves were going to become educated, self-employed and not to mention having interracial relations. A committee of leaders decided to combat this by creating eugenics. Eugenics is considered a way to...

Furthermore, organizations in Maine defend philosophical exemptions in schools as their "personal freedom and parental right", disregarding the "imminent danger to others who can't take the vaccine" (Boston Globe, 2015, para. 4).
